ELEPHANTS
The elephant is the largest land animal. There are two kinds of elephants: the
Asian and the African. The African elephant is larger than the Asian elephant and
has bigger ears.
An adult elephant can weigh as much as 4,500 kilograms and be twice as tall as
an adult person. All elephants have very long noses—called hunks—and a tusk on
either side. They use these tusks to scrape bark from trees. The tusks are made of
ivory. Elephants are often killed for their ivory tusks. At one time, people made
ivory carvings of all kinds of things. In some places in Africa, there are only a few
elephants left.
Elephants are very clever and can leam to do many things. In Thailand, they
were used in war, and even today they work in the jungle, pulling large trees.
