Some people say that the main environmental problem of our time is the loss of
particular species of plants and animals. Others say that there are more important
environmental problems.
Discuss both views and give your opinion.
Environmental issues used to be a quiet backwater a few decades ago. However, these
days it has become a widely-discussed topic. While many consider depletion of flora and
fauna the major affair that humanity is confronting, it is also suggested that other
environmentally-related problems are precedent. This essay would elucidate both
sentiments and put forward my point of view.

On the one hand, it is justifiable why the disappearance of certain species is emphasized.
The key rationale is that there is a correlation between the situation with biodiversity loss.
The existence of a species determines others’ survival, with its roles as nutrients or
population controlling factors. Accordingly, when it comes to biological imbalance, it could
have a range of implications for our livelihood, food and health. To give just one example, the
number of whales is declining, and scientists have suggested that this could lead to the
collapse of fish stocks in oceans around the world. If this is indeed the case, it would be a
disaster for hundreds of millions of people who rely upon seafood for sustenance, medicines
and income.
On the other hand, some people opine that many other problems are at a more alarming
level. Resulting from the impacts of human activities, environmental pollution is now the
worldwide focus of concern. Poor air quality, heavily contaminated water and further aspects
have been reported globally, which are the culprits of a wide range of medical problems such
as poisoning and respiratory diseases. This is compounded by the fact that global warming
caused by unrestrained emissions is fuelling the strikes of extreme natural disasters like
floods or droughts. Those would then translate into pressure on humans, with the destruction
of infrastructure and the disruption of production activities
In conclusion, public opinions have been of late divided over whether the downswing in
specific living forms or other environmental phenomena are of greater importance. From my
perspective, two mentalities are both sensible and no parties should be given precedence.
