OBJECTIVES:

1. Knowledge: By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:

- Know how to write a formal letter (expressing gratitude).
2. Skills: By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:
- Write a formal letter expressing gratitude.
- Develop collaborative skills such as: working in groups and pairs.
3. Educational aims: By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:

- Know how to show gratitude when receiving something.
II. TEACHING AIDS:



Teaching aids: Pictures, TV, laptop, extra boards.
Teaching methods: group work, pairwork, individual work.

Activity 1 (5ms)

WARM-UP


Aim:
Answer the questions:
1. Imagine that you receive a gift
or a letter from distant relatives.
What do you do to thank them
for that gift or letter?
2. When you write a letter to thank
your relatives, especially the
elders, what type of letter will
you use?

- to attract Ss’s attention.
- to lead in the writing topic.
Content:
- Ss work individually to find out the answers.
- Ss volunteer to answer the questions.
Outcome:
1. - Make a phone call.
- Send an email.
- Write a letter.
2. Formal letter.
Organisation:
- T asks Ss some questions related to the formal letter.
- T asks Ss to work individually to find out theỉr own
answer.

- Ss raise their hand to answer the question.

Activity 2

PRE-WRITING


Task 1: Read the letter below

Aim:

A. Underline the sentences that
express the points below:
a. The opening of the letter
b. The way the money is used
c. The gratitude to the donor
d. The donated amount
e. The way the receipt is issued
f. The closing of the letter

to help students familiarise with the outline of a
formal letter

Content:
- Ss read the letter in the book page 52 and work in
pairs to finish the task.
Outcome:

organisation in other to help them

=> donor(n)
- (to) issue (v): to produce or provide something
official
- gratitude (n): the feeling of being grateful

- Ss take turns writing.

Dear Teacher,
I am writing this letter to express my gratitude for your
support on my science project. I really appreciate your
willingness to help me even if it was out of your current
position.
I have to admit that I was really confused at the beginning.
Since I was a newbie, I had not had any experience in
doing projects, not to mention doing on my own. Therefore
your direction really helped to reduce my difficulty of
doing it alone. I was totally impressed by your knowledge
and enthusiasm.
I realised how lucky I was to meet you. I am really looking
forward to having an opportunity to work with you as an
assistant for your work.

Organisation:
- T gives clear instructions.
- T divides the class into 4 groups and asks Ss to do the


task in groups.
- T gives the first sentence and asks Ss in each group to
take turns to write on the extra boards.

Activity 4
Correct the sample about a formal letter
that the students have practised.

POST-WRITING
Aim:
- to correct and give feedback on student work.
Content:
- Ss share and compare the letters that they have written with
other groups.

Outcome:
Organisation:
- T asks the groups to show their work on the black board.
- T encourages Ss to spot mistakes in other groups’ assignments
and gives plus marks.

- T elicits students’ answers and gives constructive
feedback.
5. Consolidation (3ms):
- Teacher asks students to review how to write a formal letter.
- Teacher calls students randomly by using their ordinal number.
- Give feedback.
6. Homework (1m):
- Students review new vocabulary and how to write the outline of a formal letter.
- Teacher gives assignments for students as following: write a formal letter to thank
for scholarship from Dalat University.
- Teacher asks students to prepare the next lesson (Language Focus).
