Subject – Verb Agreement
(Sự hòa hợp chủ ngữ và động từ)
Quy tắc chung: S số ít + V số ít
S số nhiều + V số nhiều
E.g.: The boy is playing football in the schoolyard.
The students haven’t finished their tests yet.
* Một số trường hợp đặc biệt:

I. Động từ sẽ chia số ít trong các trường hợp sau:
1. Each, every, either, neither + Noun (số ít)
E.g.: Every ariticle in this newspaper is very interesting.
2. Each, every, either, neither + of + Noun (số nhiều)
E.g. : Each of children has a toy.
3. Everything, something, anything, everybody, somebody,
anybody, everyone, someone, anyone, nobody, nothing, no one
E.g.: Everything looks bright and cleans.
4. Danh từ chỉ tin tức, môn học (tận cùng bằng –ics), bệnh tật,
đất nước: news, physics, politics, measles, mumps, the Philippines,
the United States,…
E.g.: Physics is more difficult than chemistry.
5. Danh từ không đếm được
E.g.: The furniture was more expensive than we thought.
6. Thời gian, tiền bạc, khoảng cách, trọng lượng, tên 1 bộ phim,
tên 1 bài hát


E.g.: Four weeks is a long time to wait to hear from him.
7. Mệnh đề , V-ing, to-V
E.g.: What he told was untrue.
Collecting stamps is my hobby.
To study English well is not easy.

8. Khi chủ ngữ chỉ cùng 1 đối tượng
E.g.: Bread and meat is my favourite food.
9. Phép cộng với “and”
E.g.: Two and three is five.

II. Động từ chia số nhiều:
1. The + adj: chỉ một nhóm người
E.g.: The rich are not always happy.
2. Some, a few, both, many, several + Noun (số nhiều)
E.g.: Some books I read yesterday are famous.
3. Các danh từ số nhiều: pants, trousers, glasses, shorts, shoes,
scissors….
E.g.: My pants are in the bathroom.

III. Một số trường hợp khác:
1. - Either …S1.. or …S2
=> thì động từ chia theo S2
- Neither …S1 nor …S2
- Not only …S1. but also…S2…
E.g.: Not only my brothers but also my sister is here.
2. Khi 2 danh từ nối với nhau bằng “of”
=> thì động từ chia theo danh từ thứ nhất


E.g.: A box of cigarettes contains 20 pipes.
3. The number of + Noun số nhiều + V số ít
A number of + Noun số nhiều + V số nhiều
E.g.: The number of students is………………..
A number of students are..............................
4. Khi 2 chủ ngữ được nối với nhau bởi các liên từ: as long as, as

well as, with, together with, combined with, coupled with,
accompanied by, added to, along with, besides, no less than
=> thì động từ chia theo chủ ngữ thứ nhất và thường dùng dấu
phẩy
E.g.: The old man ,with his dogs, passes my house every morning.
Mr Robbins, accompanied by his wife and children, is leaving
tonight.
5. Khi 2 chủ ngữ được nối bởi “or” hoặc “nor”
=> thì động từ chia theo chủ ngữ thứ 2
E.g.: You or I am the winner.
6. Many + N số nhiều + V số nhiều
Many + a + N số ít + V chia số ít
E.g.: Many students are becoming more and more confident.
Many a student doesn’t want to study online.
7. Phân số/phần trăm + of + N
=> thì động từ chia theo N
E.g.: 15% of the population is unemployed.


8. Các cụm “majority of/some of/ most of/all of/none of/no…”
+ N số ít + V số ít
Các cụm “majority of/some of/ most of/all of/none of/no…”
+ N số nhiều + V số nhiều
E.g.: Some of the information is not reliable.
Some of my friends are very good.
9. Các chủ ngữ “ family, team, staff, group, crowd, committee,
congress, police, cattle….”
=> động từ chia ở số ít hoặc số nhiều đều được
E.g.: My family is very strict.
The family are having dinner.
