Facts about the Days of the Week
The days of the week were named after Norse gods and giant objects in the sky. These names come to
us originally from the Greeks and Romans, who named the days of the week after their gods. The
Anglo-Saxons, who invaded Britain hundreds of years ago, adopted this idea but substituted their own
gods. The English language has inherited and changed those names a bit, but the ones we use today
resemble those names.

Facts about Saturday and Sunday
It wasn't until the Industrial Revolution of the late 1800s that the concept of a two-day “weekend"
began to take shape. At this time, large factories that produced consumer goods were beginning to
transform the traditional farming economy into an industrial one.

Moaning about Mondays
Monday is probably the most hated day of the week. Below is a list of some not so fun facts about
Mondays and some fun to optimistic facts about Mondays. At least it most likely won’t rain that day!
Also, to get over the Monday blues, people tend to do
a lot of online shopping that day. Here are some
interesting facts (positive and negative) about
Mondays:

Which day of the week is the
favourite?
Based on a popular vote that was taken recently, it would appear that everyone’s favourite day of the
week is Saturday! This might be because it is because it is right in the middle of the weekend. People
who are very active tend to like Saturday’s the best out of all the days of the week. On the other hand,
those who were less active in the study claimed to enjoy Sundays the most. Also, those who were the
most industrious tended to enjoy Fridays the most because they could finish what they needed to at
work, and then enjoy the weekend.
• Sunday:

• Saturday:
59%
• Friday:
27%
• Thursday:

• Wednesday: 0.0000002%
• Tuesday:

NOTE: The names of the days are based on the seven celestial bodies (the Sun, the
Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, and Saturn), believed at that time to revolve
around Earth and influence its events. Most of Western Europe adopted the Roman
nomenclature. The Germanic languages substituted Germanic equivalents for the
names of four of the Roman gods: Tiw, the god of war, replaced Mars; Woden, the
god of wisdom, replaced Mercury; Thor, the god of thunder, replaced Jupiter; and
Frigg, the goddess of love, replaced Venus.

The seven-day week originated in ancient Mesopotamia and
became part of the Roman calendar in C.E.321.

From the table, it is clear that the two other Youtube channels have more overall
subscribers, numbers of views on their most popular video, and total channel views. This,
however, does make sense. The reason for this is because Sali Kaceli’s channel for example, has
the most amount of subscribers. I believe the reason for this is that his channel his started posting
Microsoft related videos. This means his viewers have been able to count on him over the last six
years to keep producing quality content on a consistent basis. For KarEl’s channel, he began
making Microsoft videos a little later than Kaceli did. KarEl’s channel also isn’t just solely
dedicated to helping people with Microsoft. It is also a channel that he dedicates to making
music covers. With a split interest displayed on his channel, it is quite possible that his current
subscribers are going to look elsewhere for help going forward.
At the moment, your channel among the three, is the newest. This means there is plenty
of room for growth as well as improvements!
The steps I recommend consist of the following:

Regarding the first suggestion of textbook assisting, many students at Centennial College
find that the wording of the textbook to be misleading and even at times, confusing. One of the
suggestions is that in addition to leading students through the steps visually, you could also
reword the instructions for them. Going forward, this could better enable students to understand
what the textbook was attempting to convey. Additionally, you could have a video explaining as
well as demonstrating some of the wordier instructions from the textbook. You could comprise a

list of said instructions from your current semester’s students as it is likely that future students
will run into similar issues. This may take a good chunk of time
to accomplish but I guarantee students around the world will be
thankful for the time and effort you put into furthering their
education.
Secondly, the suggestion of including closed captioning in
every video is an important one. Currently, some of your videos
offer that option but I noticed that it is not consistent with every
single video offering it. As is, your channel is more geared
towards aural and visual learners. That is already phenomenal
but what would make it excel would be adding closed
captioning to every video. If you decide to incorporate that, it opens the door for a whole other
group of people that learn in a verbal-oriented way. This is another action that may take some
time to be fully integrated into the channel but it’s efinitely one of those actions that you’ll feel
the positive effects of long after you’ve completed the captioning.
Thirdly, I noticed that some of your videos are a considerable length of time. This is a great
quality to have as it means you thoroughly go over every aspect of the topic being discussed in
each respective video. One minor adjustment you could make to each video is having timestamps
in the description. This could enable students who are short on time to easily maneuver their way
through your videos to find the content they require. Additionally, if those students find your
time stamped videos useful, they may just link it to their friends which will help your
channel/videos gain views!

Fourthly, I have noticed that not all people begin with an
understanding of how any of the Microsoft applications
work. It can be safe to say that tutorials for beginners would
be beneficial to people who are trying to either return to the
workforce after a long time or for someone who has never
encountered these applications before. It can be

complicated to try and figure out what sort of things a
beginner may or may not know as you take for granted the
knowledge you already have. Starting with simple actions
such as teaching someone how to save a documented in a
specific folder or renaming it a specific name can be a
starting point to ease into. Students who previously lacked
the beginner knowledge will be extremely thankful once
they understand the basics and can make use of your more advanced videos to further enhance
their technological skills.
Lastly, I believe it will overall benefit you as well as your channel to stay consistent.
Consistency provides a sense of security and is comforting to most people as they will be more
inclined to stick with you if you’re someone they can count on. Providing this feeling of support
will ensure loyal subscribers.
Remember that the You in Youtube is referring to the viewers rather than the owner of the
channel; the viewers are what keep a channel afloat after all! Keep on trying to improve even
when everything seems to be going well as there is no limit as to what someone can achieve. If
you keep striving for excellence and bettering your methods of teaching, there is nothing but
success coming your way.

PROJECT 4

Examining Theory in Practice
PME 832-001 ● Fall 2017 ● Michael Carter
Introduction
Two case studies that I will be examining have different pedagogical approaches, yet both
connect students to their learning beyond the classroom. The “Environmental School Project” in
Maple Ridge, B.C. involves students learning about the environment outside of the classroom
and among nature. The second case study on the other hand involves the VIP Kids company
( that allows students from China to learn English through one-on-one

mentoring using Web-conferencing software such as Skype.

Learning Theories and Skills Learned
The Environmental School Project uses a variety of learning theories to engage students. This
project had students explore and learn from their environment and community outside of the
classroom This method of teaching dates back to before schooling was mandatory. Students
learned from the local community, parents, and the environment around them. The
Environmental School Project intends to bring this back by having students spend “extensive
time immersed in the outdoors, dialoguing with a diversity of people connected to these places”
( />2013). This is an example of placed-based learning as students interact, explore, and have
discussions about the environment around them
( The Environmental School Project also
engages students in their learning by using project-based learning. Students learn about how to
use natural materials from the environment to build and design drums (Environmental School
Project, 2017). Another example would be when older students learn how salmon operate by
performing dissections on salmon at various times of the year, giving the students an opportunity
to knowledge build throughout the project (V. Lock, 2015). Students learn by participating in the
context of the lesson and are asked to reflect on their learning as well, which is an example of
experiential learning (Schwartz, p.8) Lastly, students also take what they learn from the
environment and apply it to different parts of the curriculum subjects such as language arts, and
sciences ( />The VIP Kids company on the other hand uses technology to engage students through one-onone tutoring sessions with a teacher in a different part of the world. Students in China learn
English through a video and presentation software program that is facilitated by a teacher in
North America. This is an example of networked learning which can be defined as “learning
through participation in communities of learners where meaning is both negotiated and created
through collaborative dialog” (Dircknick et al, 2009). The company takes advantage of
technology to create one-on-one tutoring sessions that move at the learner’s pace while they can
interact with the instructor and the screen by drawing, typing, or by speaking to the instructor.
Students can also work with a variety of instructors, which allows them to network with more
people outside of their own culture. The hidden learning skill is not just learning the English
language, but interacting and learning with others online. By interacting with a teacher one-onone, the students practice conversational English, as well as written English, ameliorating the

student’s learning experience.

The Top Challenges for the Environmental School Project
1. How can the teachers foster an inclusive classroom in this setting for students with
disabilities?
The Environmental School Project states on its website that it adheres to principles of inclusion,
yet they fail to demonstrate how a child with a physical disability would be able to partake in
their demonstrated activities.
A solution to this problem might be to allow for modifications and accommodations for this type
of learning. Perhaps an educational assistant could help with this problem by aiding and
navigating a student with a physical disability in areas that are unaccommodating or inaccessible
to the student.
2. How will this program tailor itself to meet the rigid requirements listed in the provincial
curriculum?
Teachers need to follow their provincial curriculum guidelines to ensure that students are
learning their required material at each grade level. This might be difficult for teachers in this
program who are inexperienced with connecting outdoor learning activities to school skills
required in subjects such as math and language arts.
This could be solved by having an activity guide for teachers that helps them to integrate outdoor
activities to grade level subjects and skills. Teachers can attend a few Project Wild workshops
that are hosted by the Canadian Wildlife Federation in multiple locations in Canada ( to learn
how to integrate outdoor activities with the provincial curriculum.
3. How could school boards and teachers receive funding for projects like the
Environmental School Project?
Teachers may need to rely on funding from community fundraisers and apply for grants to raise
money for field trips or activities that involve experts in the field as guest speakers.
An example of this may be applying for a grant from organizations such as the Habitat
Conservation Trust Foundation ( Teachers
can also reach out to the community for donations.

The Challenges for VIP Kids
1. How can VIP Kids add more pedagogical approaches into their teaching practices?
VIP Kids does not use a variety of pedagogies that provide authentic connections outside of the
classroom. It seems that different teachers teach one-off activities that don’t help the students
engage in knowledge building by using on-going projects (V. Lock, 2015).
2. How can the company allow for teacher creativity and innovation?
Teachers are provided with the presentations and lesson plans needed for each lesson which
eliminates the need for prep time for teachers. The negative part of this is that the teacher has
very little control to alter the lesson based on their own experiences with the material.
A way to improve this would be to offer the teacher choices in student activities and lessons. To
be hired by VIP Kids, one must have previous teaching experience. Teachers should be able to
create their own lesson plans that still cover the required skills to create a more genuine
connection with their students. The company could allow teachers to submit their lesson plans to
be reviewed and critiqued.
How can the teacher adapt lessons to individual student challenges and needs?
It seems that students are given a “one size fits all” lesson plan without considering the varying
need of individual students.

Lesson plans should consider possible variations to meet the individual learning styles and needs
for each student. A student with dyslexia for example should be given accommodations that suit
their learning.
How can the platform help students with learning disabilities?
The program online only teaches a certain way. What about learners with challenges or
disabilities? The learning would be hard to alter for the teacher if lessons are being provided.

Suggestions
These two case studies use different pedagogical approaches to engage students. The
Environmental School Project allows students to connect with their community and environment

but does not incorporate technology like VIP Kids does. Students could share their experiences
in the Environmental School Project through blogs or social media to enrich community
connections. Whereas the VIP Kids company could foster more of a student community through
collaborative assignments and on-going projects like the Environmental School Project does.
To move past this, the company should try using on-going projects with their teachers that ask
the students to build from what they learned in a previous class instead of learning a new skill
that might not be connected to the last activity they completed. The students might also benefit
from project-based learning by collaborating with their teachers to create a product to be shared
online with other students in the program (Hutchinson, 2015). An example of this might be to
create a presentation to be shared online that reflects on what they have learned in the program.

Himalayan Coffee House
According to legend, ancestors of today's Oromo people in a region of
Kaffa in Ethiopia were believed to have been the first to recognize the
energizing effect of the coffee plant. However, there is no direct
evidence that has been found earlier than the 15th century indicating
where in Africa coffee first grew or who among the native populations
might have used it as a stimulant. The story of Kaldi, the 9th-century
Ethiopian goatherd who discovered coffee when he noticed how
excited his goats became after eating the beans from a coffee plant, did
not appear in writing until 1671 and is probably apocryphal.

Part 1: About Us
Himalayan Coffee House has been open for just over two years. We
wanted to be different than most coffee shops, so we decided to add a
little something to our lattes-art!

Part 2: Schedules
Himalayan Coffee house has three groups of five-hour shifts for all
employees. These are:
Early Morning: 5 a.m. to 10 a.m.
Early Afternoon: 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Late Afternoon: 3 p.m. to 8 p.m.
*Each shift comes with a 30-minute paid break.

COFFEE

Coffee is a brewed drink
prepared from roasted coffee

beans, the seeds of berries
from certain Coffee species.
The genus Coffee is native to
tropical Africa (specifically
having its origin in Ethiopia
and Sudan) and Madagascar,
the Comoros, Mauritius, and
Réunion in the Indian Ocean.
Coffee plants are now
cultivated in over 70
countries, primarily in the
equatorial regions of the
Americas, Southeast Asia,
Indian subcontinent, and
Africa. The two most
commonly grown are C.
arabica and C. robusta. Once
ripe, coffee berries are picked,
processed, and dried. Dried
coffee seeds (referred to as
"beans") are roasted to
varying degrees, depending
on the desired flavor. Roasted
beans are ground and then
brewed with near-boiling
water to produce the beverage
known as coffee.

Congratulations on your excellent high school record! Your test scores and class rank
indicate you may be eligible for an Academic Adobe Scholarship from Graphic Design
Institute starting fall 20XX. This scholarship, which is renewable for a total of eight
semesters, would make it possible for you to graduate from our school without paying a
cent for tuition and fees—and save you a significant portion of the other costs of
attending college.
The Academic Adobe Scholarship provides the following:
• Cost of all Graphic Design Institute tuition and mandatory fees
• A cash stipend of $2,000 per semester ($4,000/year) to defray costs of books,
supplies, and other expenses.
• A $750 per semester ($1,500/year) award toward rental costs at GDI’s Canyon
Ridge student housing complex, if you decide to live on campus

Award of this scholarship, based on academic merit, would save you and your family
more than $100,000 over your four-year undergraduate career at Graphic Design
Institute. This award is donated from Michael’s Art Shop Additional outside scholarships
and any need-based financial aid for which you may qualify would further supplement
this support.
The only costs to you are textbook costs and those will be listed for your first two
semesters in the table below:
