Internet Business In the mid to late 1990s, thousands of new companies were set up with one purpose: to
benefit from the explosion of interest in the internet. Large corporations were happy (26) ______ millions in the
weirdest website ideas, confident that they would make a fortune over time. Most of them didn’t. Indeed, the vast
majority of them have gone bust, leaving their investors severely out of pocket. So what went wrong? The main
mistake that companies (27) ______ was to forget to ask how their dot com company (as internet- based companies
are sometimes called) would actually make a profit. It sounds fairly obvious now, but in the rush to ‘get on the net’,
the whole concept was overlooked. There was also a second problem (28) ______ dot coms did not anticipate. Yes,
internet traffic was increasing enormously, (29) ______ people still felt uncomfortable - many still do, in fact - about
buying products and services online. Even if the dot coms had come up with sensible business ideas, it’s unlikely
they would have brought in enough to cover their initial investment. There were (30) ______ exceptions, of course.
Some companies have been hugely successful on the internet. Most, however, found it wasn’t as easy to run an
internet business as they'd thought.

It is well-known that life expectancy is longer in Japan than in most other countries. A recent report also
shows that Japan has the longest health expectancy in the world. A healthy long life is the result of the improvement
in social environment. Scientists are trying to work out exactly what elderly Japanese people so health, and whether
there is a lesson to be learnt from their lifestyles for the rest of us. Should we make any changes to our eating habits,
for instance, or go jogging each day before breakfast? Is there some secret ingredient in the Japanese diet that is
particularly beneficial to the human body?
Another factor which contributes to the rapid population aging in Japan is a decline in birthrate. Although
longer life should be celebrated, it is actually considered a social problem. The number of older people had doubled
in the last half century that has increased pension and medical costs. The country could soon be dealing with an
economic problem, if there was so many old people to be looked after, and relatively few younger people working
and paying taxes to support them. Raising the retirement age from 65 to 70 could be one solution to the problem.
Work can give the elderly a sense of responsibility and mission in life. It's important that the elderly play active roles
in the society and live in harmony with all generations.

to each of the questions from 36 to 42.
Educating children at home as an alternative to formal education is an option chosen by families in many
parts of the world. The homeschooling movement is popular in the United States, where close to one million
Children are educated at home. In Canada, 1 percent of school-age children are homeschooled, and the idea also
enjoys growing popularity in Australia, where 20, 000 families homeschool their children. The movement is not
limited to these countries. Homeschooling families can be found all over the world, from Japan to Taiwan to
Argentina to South Africa.

Homeschooling is not a novel idea. In fact, the idea of sending children to spend most of their day away
from home at a formal school is a relatively new custom. In the United States, for example, it was not until the latter
part of the nineteenth century that state governments began making school attendance compulsory. Before that, the
concept of a formal education was not so widespread. Children learned the skills they would need for adult life at
home from tutors or their parents, through formal instruction or by working side by side with the adults of the
family.
In the modern developed world, where the vast majority of children attend school, families choose
homeschooling for a variety of reasons. For people who live in remote areas, such as the Australian outback or the
Alaskan Wilderness, homeschooling may be their only option. Children who have exceptional talents in the arts or
other areas may be homeschooled so that they have more time to devote to their special interests. Much of the
homeschooling movement is made up of families who, for various reasons, are dissatisfied with the schools available
to them. They may have a differing educational philosophy, they may be concerned about the safety of the school
environment, or they may feel that the local schools cannot adequately address their children's educational needs.
Although most families continue to choose a traditional classroom education for their children, homeschooling as an
alternative educational option is becoming more popular.

to each of the questions.
Twenty-five students from Walling School are currently living in France. They are there for three months as
part of a living-abroad project. The 16- and 17-year-old students are living with French families and attending a
French school. Most of the students have taken French language classes for 3 or 4 years and are finally getting an
opportunity to use their French.

Not only are students learning a new language, but they are learning about a new culture, too. Students have
been particularly surprised about the French attitude towards food. "They won't leave anything on their plate," says
Vanessa Athol. “They aren't wasteful at all. ” Vanessa has vowed to be more careful with waste when returning to the
United States.
The group's chaperone, Mrs. Smith, has been pleased with the students' acquisition of language. "Even the
most timid are trying their best to speak. The students are learning a lot. I'm very impressed," she said. Mrs. Smith
added that she thinks living with a French family makes a difference because students are forced to speak French.
“We are all very grateful to the French families who are hosting us.”
The French families are happy to have the students, as they are getting to learn about American culture. Both
groups will be celebrating the exchange at a large potluck dinner at the end of the stay. There will be a slide show of
memories and the students will speak about their experiences. Currently, the American students are periodically
posting pictures and student essays on the Walling School website. "Living in France is an experience I'll never
forget," writes student Tina Davis. "I know I'll want to eat these croissants and this Camembert for the rest of my
life!"

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct answer
to each of the questions.
In the world today, particular in the two most industrialized areas, North America and Europe, recycling is
the big news. People are talking about it, practicing it, and discovering new ways to be sensitive to the environment.
Recycling means finding ways to use products a second time. The motto of the recycling movement is “Reduce,
Reuse, Recycle”.
The first step is to reduce garbage. In stores, a shopper has to buy products in blister packs, boxes and
expensive plastic wrappings. A hamburger from a fast food restaurant comes in lots of packaging: usually paper, a
box and a bag. All that packaging is wasted resources. People should try to buy things that are wrapped simply, and
to reuse cups and utensils. Another way to reduce waste is to buy high-quality products. When low-quality
appliances break, many customers throw them away and buy new ones - a loss of more resources and more energy.
For example, if a customer buys a high-quality appliance that can be easily repaired, the manufacturer receives an
important message. In the same way, if a customer chooses a product with less packaging, that customer sends an
important message to the manufacturers. To reduce garbage, the throw-away must stop.
The second step is to reuse. It is better to buy juices and soft drinks in returnable bottles. After customers
empty the bottles, they return them to the stores. The manufacturers of the drinks collect bottles, wash them, and
then fill them again. The energy that is necessary to make new bottles is saved. In some parts of the world, returning
bottles for money is a common practice. In those places, the garbage dumps have relatively little glass and plastic
from throw-away bottles.
The third step being environmentally sensitive is to recycle. Spent motor oil can be cleaned and used again.
Aluminum cans are expensive to make. It takes the same amount of energy to make one aluminum can as it does to
run a color TV set for three hours. When people collect and recycle aluminum (for new cans), they help save one of
the world’s precious resources.

Internet Business In the mid to late 1990s, thousands of new companies were set up with one purpose: to
benefit from the explosion of interest in the internet. Large corporations were happy (26) ______ millions in the

majority of them have gone bust, leaving their investors severely out of pocket.

Some companies have been hugely successful on the internet. Most, however, found it wasn’t as easy to run an

9

part of the nineteenth century that state governments began making school attendance compulsory.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct answer
to each of the questions.
We first learn about loving and caring relationships from our families. Family is defined as a domestic group
of people with some degree of kinship - whether through blood, marriage, or adoption. Ideally, each child is
nurtured, respected, and grows up to care for others and develop strong and healthy relationships. This does not
mean that it is always easy to make and keep friends; it just means that we share the goal of having strong
relationships.
"Family" includes your siblings and parents, as well as relatives who you may not interact with every day,
such as your cousins, aunts, uncles, grandparents, and stepparents. These are probably the people you are closest to

and with whom you spend the most time. Having healthy relationships with your family members is both important
and difficult.
Families in the 21st century come in all shapes and sizes: traditional, single parent, blended (more than one
family together in the same house), and gay and lesbian parents - just to name a few. No matter the "type" of family
you have, there are going to be highs and lows - good times and bad. Many times, however, families become blocked
in their relationships by hurt, anger, mistrust, and confusion. These are natural and normal, and few families do not
have at least a few experiences with them. The worst time for most families is during a divorce. By making a few
simple changes in the way we look at the world and deal with other people, it is possible to create happier, more
stable relationships. Families need to be units of mutual caring and support; they can be sources of lifelong strength
for all individuals.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct answer
to each of the questions.
In my experience, freshmen today are different from those I knew when I started as a counselor and
professor 25 years ago. College has always been demanding both academically and socially. But students now are
less mature and often not ready for the responsibility of being in college.
It is really too easy to point the finger at parents who protect their children from life’s obstacle. Parents, who
handle every difficulty and every other responsibility for their children writing admission essays to picking college
courses, certainly may contribute to their children’s lack of coping strategies. But we can look even more broadly to
the social trends of today.
How many people do you know who are on medication to prevent anxiety or depression? The number of
students who arrive at college already medicated for unwanted emotions has increased dramatically in the past 10
years. We, as a society, don’t want to “feel” anything unpleasant and we certainly don’t want our children to “suffer”.
The resulting problem is that by not experiencing negative emotions, one does not learn the necessary skills
to tolerate and negotiate adversity. As a psychologist, I am well aware of the fact that some individuals suffer from
depression and anxiety and can benefit from treatment, but I question the growing number of medicated adolescents
today. Our world is more stressful in general because of the current economic and political realities, but I don’t
believe that the college experience itself is more intense today than that of the past 10 years. What I do think is that
many students are often not prepared to be young “adults” with all the responsibilities of life.
What does this mean for college faculty and staff? We are required to assist in the basic parenting of these
students – the student who complains that the professor didn’t remind her of the due date for an assignment that was
clearly listed on the syllabus and the student who cheats on an assignment in spite of careful instructions about
plagiarism.
As college professors, we have to explain what it means to be an independent college student before we can
even begin to teach. As parents and teachers we should expect young people to meet challenges. To encourage them
in this direction, we have to step back and let them fail and pick themselves up and move forward. This approach
needs to begin at an early age so that college can actually be a passage to independent adulthood.

Plastic is a material we use every day. The first plastics were made more than 100 years ago from parts of
plants. Plastics are now made from oil, coal and natural gas. We are using up these things so fast that the Earth’s
supplies may run out. Because of this, scientists are investigating new ideas for making plastics from plants such as
sweet potato, bamboo and flax.
Things made from plastic can be useful for people but bad for the planet. Some plastics can last for a long
time without wearing out, and can be difficult to get rid of when they are not needed. They can remain in rubbish
dumps called landfill sites for hundreds of years. Landfills can be smelly, ugly, and harmful to our planet.
Recycling is a good way to get rid of unwanted plastics. Recycled waste materials can be used again to make
new products. This can be difficult as different types of plastic need to be recycled in different ways. Some kinds of

plastics can be melted down and used to make new things such as bags and bottles. Others can be made into fibers
(strands of material) for clothing.
Another way to protect the environment is to use canvas bags for shopping rather than plastic ones. A lot of
plastic objects can also be reused. Plastic bottles can be refilled many times, rather than throwing them away once
they are empty. Unwanted plastic goods such as CDs and toys can be sold or given away to charity shops.

question.
Grandparents are becoming the forgotten generation, with youngsters now too busy to listen to their stories
from the olden days.
A study of 1,000 five to 18 year-olds reveals just 21 per cent will visit their older relatives to hear about how
their lives were different in the past; such as where they worked, how it was living in the war, and how they met
the love of their life. More than half of youths have no idea what job their grandparent did before retirement admitting they'd never thought to ask. Sadly, one in 10 admitted they are simply not interested in their grandmother's
or grandad's previous job or talents and interests, and a quarter only turn up to see them for pocket money. But 23
per cent claim the reason they don't know anything about their older relatives is because they don't really get the
chance to talk properly.
Geoff Bates, spokesman for McCarthy and Stone's Inspirational Generation campaign, said: We know this
generation have lived full lives with heroic tales to tell and so much to offer, but how many of us have actually
thought to ask these questions of our older family members? We want to shout about the amazing feats retirees
have achieved in their lifetime and put the spotlight on the wonderfully colorful lives of today's older people. We are
calling on parents and children to talk to their grandparents, to find out what they have done in their lives - and
continue to do, and tell us all about it so we can give them the credit they deserve."
Researchers found that although 65 per cent of youngsters do see their grandparents every single week, 37
per cent claim this is only because their parents want them to. And while 39 per cent talk to their grandparents on the
phone, Facebook or Skype at least once a week - 16 per cent once a day - conversation is rarely focused on what
they are doing or have done in the past. Four in 10 kids have no idea what their grandparents proudest achievements
are, while 30 per cent don't know if they have any special skills or talents. And 42 per cent don't spend any time
talking about their grandparent's history -and are therefore clueless about what their grandmother or grandad was
like when they were younger. Perhaps due to this lack of communication and respect, just six per cent of children say
they look up to their grandparents as a role model and inspiration. However, grandchildren are agreed their
grandparents are both loving and friendly, while 43 per cent think they're funny - with 23 per cent admitting they
often have more fun with their elderly relatives than their parents.

Fiberscopes are one of the most important Outcomes of the science of fiber optics. Fibers made of glass and
transparent acrylic plastic are capable of conveying light energy, and when thousands of these fibers are combined in
what is called a fiberscope, they can transmit images. The most common fiberscopes contain about 750,000 fibers,
each 0.001 centimeter, or 10 microns, in diameter. For certain uses, the diameter of the fiber may be as small as 5
microns.
Fiberscopes have a wide range of applications. In the medical field, physicians use fiberscopes to examine
internal organs and as an aid in delicate surgeries. Miniature probes have also been developed to view muscle fiber,
skin tissue, and blood cells. Fiberscopes have also found varied uses in industry, particularly to inspect or control
operations in inaccessible areas. Bundles of fiberscopes fused together in a solid plate, called a faceplate, are being
used in the manufacture of television picture tubes and other cathode-ray tube devices.
The most far-reaching applications of fiber-optic technology are in communications. Optical fibers carry
voice messages for telephone service. The sound of the voice is electronically broken down into thousands of pulses
per second, which causes a transmitting laser to send coordinated pulses of light through the optical fibers. At the
receiving end, the light pulses are converted to electrical signals and the voice message is reconstructed. Light-wave
communication systems can handle an immensely greater number of telephone calls and television programs than
the current system, and they will form the basis of the "electronic superhighway" expected to crisscross the nation in
the near future of the information age.
Question 31. The main topic of the passage is ______.

A. have more uses in industry than in medicine
B. will play a major role in the information age
C. will decrease in importance as they become more common

Man is a land animal, but he closely tied to the sea. Throughout history the sea has served the needs of man.
The sea provided man with food and convenient way to travel to many parts of the world. Today, nearly two thirds of
the world's population live within 80 kilometers of the sea coast. In the modern technological world, the sea offers
many resources to help mankind survive. Resources on land are beginning to be used up. The sea, however, still can
be hoped to supply many of man's needs.
The list of riches of the sea yet to be developed by man's technology is impressive. Oil and gas exploration
have been carried out for nearly 30 years. Valuable amounts of mineral exist on the ocean floor ready to be mined.
Fish farming- promises to be a good way to produce large quantities of food. The culture of fish and shellfish is an
ancient skill practiced in the past mainly by the oriental people. Besides oil and gas, the sea may offer new source of
energy. Experts believe that the warm temperature of the ocean can be used in a way similar to the steam in a
steamship. Ocean currents and waves offer possible use as a source of energy. Technology is enabling man to explore

ever more deeply under the sea. The development of strong, new materials has made this possible.
The technology to harvest the sea continues to improve. Experts believe that by the year 2030 the problems
that prevent us from exploiting fully the food, minerals and energy sources of the sea will be largely solved.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct answer
to each of the following questions.
Sometimes people add to what they say even when they don't talk. Gestures are the "silent language" of
every culture. We point a finger or move another part of the body to show what we want to say. It is important to
know the body language of every country or we may be misunderstood. In the United States, people greet each other
with a handshake in a formal introduction. The handshake must be firm. If the handshake is weak, it is a sign of
weakness or unfriendliness. Friends may place a hand on the other's arm or shoulder. Some people, usually women,
greet a friend with a hug.
Space is important to Americans. When two people talk to each other, they usually stand about two and a
half feet away and at an angle, so they are not facing each other directly. Americans get uncomfortable when a
person stands too close. They will move back to have their space. If Americans touch another person by accident,
they say, "Pardon me." or "Excuse me." Americans like to look the other person in the eyes when they are talking. If
you don't do so, it means you are bored, hiding something, or are not interested. But when you are stare at someone,
it is not polite. For Americans, thumbs-up means yes, very good, or well done. Thumbs down means the opposite. To
call a waiter, raise one hand to head level or above. To show you want the check, make a movement with your hands
as if you are signing a piece of paper. It is all right to point at things but not at people with the hand and index finger.
Americans shake their index finger at children when they scold them and pat them on the head when they admire
them. Learning a culture's body language is sometimes confusing. If you don't know what to do, the safest thing to
do is to smile.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct answer
to each of the following questions.
Coral reefs are some of the most diverse ecosystems in the world, housing tens of thousands of marine
species. With their hardened surfaces, corals are sometimes mistaken as being rocks. And, because they are attached,
“taking root” to the seafloor, they are often mistaken for plants. However, unlike rocks, corals are alive. And unlike
plants, corals do not make their own food. Corals are in fact animals. Appearing as solitary forms in the fossil record
more than 400 million years ago, corals are extremely ancient animals that evolved into modern reef-building forms
over the last 25 million years.
Coral reefs are the largest structures on earth of biological origin. Coral reefs are unique and complex
systems. Rivaling old growth forests in longevity of their ecological communities, well-developed reefs reflect
thousands of years of history.
Corals are ancient animals related to jellyfish and anemones. The branch or mound that we often call “a
coral” is actually made up of thousands of tiny animals called polyps. A coral polyp is an invertebrate that can be no

bigger than a pinhead to up to 30 centimeters (1 foot) in diameter. The polyps extend their tentacles at night to sting
and ingest tiny organisms called plankton and other small creatures. Each polyp has a saclike body and a mouth that
is encircled by stinging tentacles. The polyp uses calcium carbonate (limestone) from seawater to build a hard, cupshaped skeleton. This skeleton protects the soft, delicate body of the polyp.
Reefs only occur in shallow areas that are reachable by sunlight because of the relationship between coral
and algae. Various types of microscopic algae, known as Symbiodinium, live inside of the coral, providing them with
food and helping them to grow faster.
There are over 2,500 kinds (species) of corals. About 1,000 are the hard corals that build coral reefs. Other
corals are soft corals. Soft corals have skeletons that are flexible and can bend with the water. The three main types
of coral reefs are fringing reefs, barrier reefs, and coral atolls. The most common type of reef is the fringing reef.
This type of reef grows seaward directly from the shore. They form borders along the shoreline and surrounding
islands. When a fringing reef continues to grow upward from a volcanic island that has sunk entirely below sea level,
an atoll is formed. Atolls are usually circular or oval in shape, with an open lagoon in the center. Any reef that is
called a barrier reef gets its name because its presence protects the shallow waters along the shore from the open sea.
That protection promotes the survival of many types of sea plant and animal life.
