READING COMPREHENSION
I was born in Berlin, Germany. My family live there but I work as a computer lab
assistant in South Africa. Every day I always get up around 6:30 and take a shower so that I

can leave at 7:00. I am not used to having breakfast. I live around 30 km from the city
centre and I need to leave early to avoid traffic on the highways. As I drive, I always see by
the side of the road so many homeless kids and grown-ups begging for food. When I switch
on my radio in the car it is always sad news of people raping small kids, armed robbery, car

hijacks, murders and car accidents killing hundreds of people. This is our everyday news in
South Africa. It feels so frustrating and while I drive I pray from my heart “Oh God, please
look after me wherever I go”. At 9:00 I’m at work doing my job. I stay there for about seven
to eight hours. At 17:30 I hit the road again thinking of what actually is happening out there
in the world. After getting home, I go to a pub to have a couple of beers to cool my nerves. I
really do not enjoy life and work here.
