PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT & DECISION MAKING
February 26, 2013 & March 13, 2013 (two-day seminar)
Critical Thinking
Annette Veech, PhD
Senior Lecturer in Business Communication, Olin Business School, Washington University
Labeling communication as a “soft skill” is a misnomer; simply communicating succinctly
may not set a successful course toward our destination. In reality, we often experience sharp
turns and deep drop-offs when interacting with others. Navigating the ever-changing waters
of communication requires not just a moral or strategic compass but also creativity, balanced
perceptions, and an ability to maneuver through dynamic group and individual relationships.

key to your ability to lead effectively. This interactive session, designed by members of the
Harvard Negotiation Project, will offer a framework and practical skills for handling conflict
and making sound decisions while maintaining good working relationships.

College of Arts & Science, Washington University
In today’s highly competitive and rapidly changing economy, creative thinking is more

Leading Through Influence
J. Stuart Bunderson, PhD
George & Carol Bauer Professor of Organizational Ethics & Governance,
Olin Business School, Washington University
Exercising real leadership and leading positive change require more than just a worthy goal or
a good idea. They also require the ability to influence people both within and outside your chain

of command in order to gain support and overcome resistance. That is, they require the skill of
informal leadership. This session helps participants to understand and develop three key skills
of informal leadership: navigating politics, understanding power and exercising influence.
December 11, 2013
Doing Well While Doing Good NEW
Stacy Jackson, PhD
Adjunct Professor of Leadership & Professional Development
Olin Business School, Washington University
In the midst of striving to serve customers in a profitable and sustainable manner,
executives must find new ways to address social, environmental and economic influences.
Firms vary greatly in how they reconcile their pursuit of profitable results with their goal
to serve the common good. Some focus on narrow shareholder perspectives, and others
divert needed resources to corporate social responsibility endeavors that may seem
irrelevant to the core values of the firm. Doing well while doing good seems out of reach.
Can firms genuinely sustain a competitive advantage while providing an increasing
societal value that does not erode profitability inappropriately? This program will help
you evaluate the trade-offs of various firm approaches to reconciling these challenges.
FINANCE
February 20, 2013
Finance for Nonfinancial Managers
October 24, 2013

STRATEGY & CORPORATE GROWTH
March 7, 2013
The Trillion-Dollar R&D Fix NEW
October 9–10, 2013 (two-day seminar)
Creating Value Through Mergers & Acquisitions NEW
November 14, 2013
Building Competitive Advantage Through Strategy
Anne Marie Knott, PhD
Professor of Strategy, Olin Business School, Washington University
A recent Harvard Business Review article, “The Trillion-Dollar R&D Fix” argues that the
problem with innovation today is that firms are flying blindly with respect to their R&D.
They don’t know how to measure R&D effectiveness and accordingly resort to rules of thumb

when setting their R&D budgets. A new measure, firms’ Research Quotient (RQ), changes
that. RQ is a universal, uniform and reliable measure of R&D effectiveness that allows firms
to gauge how good they are absolutely (and relative to rivals). It also offers guidance on
how to improve RQ, but the most immediate benefit of the measure is that it identifies the
optimal R&D budgets for firms. The article shows that if just the top 20 U.S. firms got their
budgets right last year, it would have created $1 trillion in market value.
This seminar will describe firm RQ, its measurement and its link to optimal R&D and market
value and present results from a recent National Science Foundation study to identify the
factors underpinning firm RQ.
Todd R. Zenger, PhD
Robert & Barbara Frick Professor of Business Strategy,
Olin Business School, Washington University
Gain a clearer understanding of how to craft strategy in your business so it delivers competitive
advantage. This seminar will help you develop tools for understanding competition within your
industry and ways to assess your organization’s resources and capabilities, as well as give you
the ability to analyze business models.
Anjan Thakor, PhD
Director of Doctoral Programs and John E. Simon Professor of Finance,
Olin Business School, Washington University
Todd Milbourn, PhD
Hubert C. & Dorothy R. Moog Professor of Finance, Olin Business School, Washington University
In this highly competitive marketplace, mergers and acquisitions can allow a firm to
execute its strategy and deliver value to shareholders expeditiously. However, the M&A
waters are fraught with failures and value destruction. In this seminar, we will highlight
the common pitfalls in such deals and develop techniques of best practice for target
identification, deal valuation and post-deal integration deals. We will also describe
the latest empirical findings from scientific studies of these kinds of deals and devote
attention to the valuation of privately owned companies.
