What sort of early childhood education services
are there?
NewZealandprovidesadiverserangeofbothparent-ledand
teacher-ledservicesforyoungchildren.
Teacher-led services include:
» educationandcareservicesthatprovidebothsessional
andall-dayprogrammesforinfantsandtoddlersaswell
asthree-,four-andsomefive-year-olds.Theseservices
maybeprivatelyownedornot-for-profitcommunity-
basedservices.Someareoperatedasanadjunctto
themainpurposeofabusinessororganisation
(suchasacrècheatauniversityorpolytechnic).
Theseservicesincludeasmallbutincreasingnumber
ofMāoriimmersionandPasifikaservices
» NewZealandFreeKindergartens,whichoffersessional
andall-dayearlychildhoodeducationforchildrenfrom
threeuntilschoolage.Sessionalkindergartensemploy
onlyqualifiedandregisteredteachers
» TheCorrespondenceSchool,whichprovidesdistance
earlychildhoodeducationforyoungchildrenwhoare
unabletoattendaservicebecauseofisolation,illness,

TheCorrespondenceSchoolalsoonlyemploysqualified
andregisteredteachers

composedofaclusterornetworkofhome-based
educatorsoperatingunderthesupervisionofanearly-

The coordinator places children with educators in
approvedhomesforanagreednumberofhoursperweek.

a teacher?

AGraduateDiplomaofTeaching(EarlyChildhoodEducation)
isaone-yearfull-timeoratwo-yearpart-timeprogramme

DiplomaofTeaching(Primary).Since1November2010,
NewZealand-qualifiedandregisteredprimaryteachersin
teacher-ledECEserviceshavebeencountedasregistered
teachersforfundingpurposes.
6 What entry requirements do I need to meet?
UniversityEntranceistheminimumrequirementtogo
toaNewZealanduniversity.Whereaproviderrefersto
a requirement for applicants to have University Entrance
asstatedbytheNewZealandQualificationsAuthority
(NZQA),thisisdefinedasaminimumof42creditsat
Level3orhigherontheNewZealandQualifications

byTeachNZmeansyoucanbeassuredthatthequalification

Steiner education (often referred to as Waldorf after the
Waldorf-Astoriafactorysettingofthefirstschool)isbased
onanunderstandingoftheunifiedthree-foldhumanbeing.
Steinerdevelopedasciencethatdescribesandinvestigateshow
thehumanbeingconsistsofbody(physical),soul(psyche)and

TheEarlyYearsmajorisaMāorilanguageandcultural
regenerationstrategyfortheearlyyears(0–8years).Thisdegree
majorprovidesgraduateswiththeflexibilitytomovebetween
Māori-mediumearlychildhoodandMāori-mediumjuniorprimary
ordualMāori-/English-mediumearlychildhoodanddualMāori/
Englishjuniorprimary.Themixedmodeofdeliveryenables
studentstoworkwhilestudyingbyattendingweekendnoho
maraeandthroughonlinedelivery.Thequalificationprovides
abaseforfurthercareerpathoptions,includingstudyin
postgraduateMaster’sandDoctoralprogrammes.
Academic entry requirements
StudentswishingtoenrolintheBachelorofEducation
(Teaching)EarlyYearsmustprovideevidenceoftheirabilityto
pursueandcompleteaBachelor’sdegreesuccessfully.
Student entry is open to applicants who:
» are18yearsorolder
» haveademonstratedinterestorinvolvementinteachingand
learningand:
–ifunder20yearsofagehaveUniversityEntrance
–ifover20yearsofageareadmittedthroughaninterview
and assessment process at the discretion of the Academic
Registrar.
Candidateswillbeadmittedthroughaninterviewandtesting
process.TheMāorilanguagecompetencyofallapplicantswill
beassessedaspartoftheinterviewprocess.
