On the cusp of a new order
Evenaftertwoyearsofhighdramasincethecollapseof
Lehman,theworldisstillexperiencingveryuncertaintimesand
yetdespitethetalkoffurthermarketcrashes,acurrencycrisis,
nancialmeltdownandthedemiseofhedgefunds,thereis
a great deal of optimism for the future of investment funds.
However,mostpeopleareagreedthatthefuturewilllook
verydifferenttowhathasgonebefore.Forinstance,there
aremajorregulatorychangescomingdownthetracknotonly
in the regulation of the investment funds industry itself but
nancialservicesgenerally,includingtheregulationofbanks.
Thesechangeswillhavetheirownimpactonourindustry.
Whilemostofusareoptimisticaboutthefutureitisnotat
allclearwheretheindustrygoalpostswillnallybeplaced.
Thereisstillmuchdebate,lobbyingandworktobedone
ifwearetoinuenceaneworderwhichwillbepractical
andworkable.ThisiswhytheGlobalisationofInvestment

FundsConferencewithitslongandillustrioustrackrecord
ismorerelevantthanever.Lastyear’sconferencewasan
unqualiedsuccessandIbelievethemainconcernfor2011
iswhetherthevenuewillbeabletoaccommodatethe
expectedincreaseinnumbers.Iwouldtherefore,encourage
