Lesson 1
This is the wild( hoang sơ) and beautiful landscape( phong cảnh) of Central Australia: the 'outback,'
( vùng hẻo lánh)which covers seventy-five percent of the continent( lục địa). It seems to lie, still and
untouched( tĩnh lặng và hoang sơ), in the silence of its first creation. And yet( chưa hết), according to the
Australian Aborigines( thổ dân), the whole continent is a maze( mê cung) of song.

The Aboriginal myth( huyền thoại) of how the world began is extremely complex( phức tạp), but I'll try to
simplify( đơn giản hóa) it. In the beginning, which they call 'Dreamtime( mơ mộng),' the 'Ancestors( tổ
tiên)' created themselves from clay( đất sét), and then began to sing the world into existence. They
walked about, singing the names of everything they saw: birds, animals, plants, rocks and rivers. As they
walked, they left trails of footprints( dấu chân) and songs. These are the famous ( nổi tiếng)'Songlines,'
which form a profound part of the Aborigines' religious beliefs.( tín ngưỡng tơn giáo)

Lesson 2: Culture Crash ( sự sập đổ văn hóa )

It's almost( đã gần) thirty years now since Brad Perkins came into our small southern town like an
ambulance (xe cấp cứu )on its way to a car crash( tai nạn oto). At the time,( vào thời điểm đó) he had no
idea that anyone had noticed him, but of course( tất nhiên ) we had. He was from New York City, a place
where manners( cách cư xử), values, and the rules of courtesy( quy tắc lịch sự) were very different from
ours. Up North, being direct is something positive( tích cực). Down here, it's considered rude( thô lỗ).

During the years( trong suốt nhiều năm), Brad never realized that( nhận ra) he was offending( xúc phạm)
anyone. We now know that he never meant to( tự ý). Once, Dr. Franklin invited Brad for Sunday dinner,
not long after he'd arrived. Although he is actually quite reserved( khá dè dặt), Dr. Franklin likes to be
known around town as a cultured( văn hóa) man. He therefore felt the need to welcome Brad to town
and show him some southern hospitality( hiếu khách). Yet that meal caused such a problem for Brad that
he almost had to leave town. Looking back now (bây giờ nhìn lại), I can see that we were the ones who
were being rude, and not Brad Perkins.

There were only six people at dinner, but what he did seemed to have been broadcast( truyền tin) all
over town by the next day. And, of course, everyone took offense. Later, Dr. Franklin agreed that they
had gone overboard( đi quá đà) and had been too sensitive( quá nhạy cảm ). As a rule, however, it is not
customary( phong tục) for a guest to refuse ( một vị khách đã từ chối)a second helping in a southerner's
home.

Brad Perkins will have been here for thirty years next June. We've come to admire( ngưỡng mộ) him, and
it's hard to imagine the place without him. We treat him just like one of us, but I guess( dự đoán) we've
just gotten used to people from up North. Over the years( trong những năm qua), we've tried to( cố
gắng) learn more about what's considered appropriate( thích hợp) in the North. We realize now that
they're not rude; they just communicate differently.

If you are upset( khó chịu)
