Imagine flying to the moon or
drifting among the stars in space.
Some brave men and women
called astronauts do just that.
They travel into space to learn
more about our world.
What do you think it’s like to
live and work in space? Let’s take
a look.
2

Why Do Astronauts Go To Space?
Astronauts ride in rockets that
carry them through space. Some
travel to a space station where they
study the sun, Earth, and moon.
Astronauts learn things about space
that we didn’t know before.
3

What Do Astronauts Wear?
Astronauts dress for their jobs.
During take-off and landing, they
wear suits that hold a mirror and
a radio. If astronauts get into
trouble, they can use these tools to
show or tell others where they are.
4

Inside the space station, there
is plenty of air to breathe, and
the temperature is just right. The
astronauts can wear shorts and
T-shirts, just like they do on Earth.
Outside the space station, there
is no air, and it can be very cold.
Astronauts wear suits that protect
them and help them to breathe.
5

How Do Astronauts Sleep?
Astronauts sleep in sleeping
bags attached to the wall. That’s
because there is no gravity—
everything is light and bouncy.
If they didn’t tie themselves down,
their bodies would float around.
6

What Do Astronauts Eat?
Astronauts eat many of the
same foods in space as they do
on Earth. They just add water or
heat them up. Astronauts also
bring foods that are ready to eat,
like fruit and nuts.
7

What Do Astronauts Do?
Astronauts work hard. In the
lab, they might study how things
live and grow in space. Outside
the space station, they fix parts
of the station that have broken.
Sometimes they try out new tools.
8

Astronauts must exercise in
space or their bones will get soft.
Some ride bikes that don’t move.
Others run in place.
Astronauts also like to have fun.
They read, play games, and listen
to music.
9

What Will You Do?
Would you like to travel in
space some day? If you want to
be an astronaut, there are some
things you can do now. Work
hard in school. Get plenty of
exercise. Believe in your dreams.
Maybe one day, you will live and
work in space.
