Background Read the title, and ask children
what they know about snow. Ask: In what season
does it snow? What did you do when it snowed?
How does snow feel? Tell children this book tells
about animals that hide in the snow.

READ THE BOOK
Choose among these options for reading to
support children at all English proficiency levels.
Read Aloud Read the book aloud as children
follow along. Pause to verify comprehension and
to explain unfamiliar concepts.
Monitored Reading Have children read
aloud a few pages at a time. Use the following
questions to support comprehension:
• Page 2 What color is snow? (Snow is
white.)
• Pages 3–8 Which animals can hide in
the snow? (A polar bear, fox, snowy owl,
weasel, and snowshoe rabbit can hide
in snow.)

Talk About It

1. They are the same color as snow. (Main Idea)
2. It would be easier to find red mittens. You
could see them against the snow.

Extend Language Milk is white. Strawberries
are red. Chocolate is brown. Sugar is white. An
orange is orange. Milk and sugar are as white
as snow.
Answers to page 36:
Drawings will vary. Sentences should match
drawings. Possible items in drawings: sugar,
paper, a sock, a T-shirt, an egg, a dove, a slice
of bread
Family Link Read aloud the Family Link activity
on page 36 before sending copies of the Study
Guide home with children. Later, have them
share experiences their families have had with
snow.
