- Explain in your own words: What is skimming in reading skills?
Skimming can be understood as a speed reading technique in which the
reader only pays attention to the main point or essence in the passage, to get a
general idea of the content. When skimming, text containing unnecessary
details, stories, examples, or other data is intentionally omitted.
- Give an example of applying skimming in reading and explain how
skimming is applied.
(The example may be a text or a paragraph, and your explanations must

As you read, ask yourself the following questions, which will help you
decide whether or not to use the skim method. If the answer is yes to any of the
questions below, you should.
- This is a non-fiction document / This is not a fiction genre document?
- I have a lot of documents but only little time to read them?
- Did I know anything about this subject?
- Is there any document (section) that can be omitted?

Scanning is used when you are looking for specific information such as
phone numbers in a directory or sports results in the newspaper. Scanning skill
also allows you to find details and other information such as name, location, an
event when there is not much time.

Steps to perform skimming
1. Read the title (title) of the article, then read the opening paragraph to
determine the main content in the article.
2. Read the topic sentences of each paragraph. These topic sentences are
usually the first sentence of the essay. But sometimes a paragraph opens with a
