Abstract
Childrenandadultswithmajorcongenitalheartdiseaserepresenta
challengingpatientpopulationwhorequirerepeatedanestheticexposuresto
undergolife-savingandquality-of-life–improvingprocedures.Adedicated
anesthesiacareteamdirectedbyapediatriccardiacanesthesiologistisbest
qualifiedtotakecareofhigh-riskpatients.Patientswithrepairedor
palliatedheartdiseaseoflessercomplexitycanbetakencareofbygeneral
anesthesiaprovidersfamiliarwiththeirpatient'sspecificphysiologyand
pathophysiology.Giventherequirementsforrepeatedandprolonged
exposurestoanestheticandsedativesatayoungageinthisvulnerable
patientpopulation,concernsfortheeffectsofthispracticeonbrain
developmentneedtobefurtheraddressed.Additionalresearchisurgently
neededtoimprovesafetyandreducemorbidityandmortalityinthis
complexandever-evolvingpatientpopulation.
