His people, Israel.
b) They failed to enter the land because of
unbelief (Heb 3:19).
c) Today God offers rest to the Christian if
he will fulfill the conditions of belief and
obedience. (“There remains therefore a
Sabbath rest for the people of God,” Heb
4:9.)
The “rest” spoken of in Hebrews does not
refer to heaven, since the epistle teaches it is
possible for a Christian to come short of it.
(“Let us fear lest, while a promise remains of
entering His rest, any one of you should
seem to have come short of it,” Heb 4:1.)
Therefore, this rest is a state of Christian
living today, of victory and blessing, where
Jesus has preeminence in the heart (hence,
the fruits of His rest), and where the Holy
Spirit continually lls the soul. Even as the
Israelite needed to watch his life and keep
right with God on his journey to Canaan if
he would enter the land, so the Christian
must “be diligent to enter that rest” (Heb
4:11). Spend time meditating on God’s o er
of spiritual rest to Christians who ful ll His
conditions.
