Jack-O’-Lantern
Created by Marcia Joy Miller
A convenient way to “carve” a pumpkin for Halloween
is to fold one from paper. You can change the shape of
Jack-O’-Lantern and its facial features by following the
suggestions given at the end of the instructions.

PAPER: Make the model from the designated sheet of
folding paper included in the back of the book on page
161. You can also use a 10-inch square of orange origami
paper. After you become familiar with the model, you can
fold it from a 6-inch square of origami paper.

1 Start with the orange side
of the paper facing away
from you. Fold the right edge
to the left edge. Unfold. Fold
the top edge to the bottom
edge.

2 Fold the front edge up
making approximately a ¼"
hem and then fold the hem
over again. Next, repeat the
procedure on the back flap.

BASIC TECHNIQUES: A knowledge of how to make a
valley fold and a mountain fold is all that is needed (see
Chapter 1—Terms and Symbols).

SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS: If folding
the model from a 6-inch square,
make proportionate changes
to the lengths specified
in steps 2, 11, 14,
and 15.

the bottom right corner up
and to the left so that the
upper edge of the new flap
is located approximately
3/8" below the crease and
is parallel to it. (If you are
using 10-inch origami paper,
make this amount ½" as
indicated by the illustration.)
Repeat on the left side.

right a bit to angle it (or pull
it to the left, if that is easier
to do) and then flatten the
area. Fold the flap near the
bottom downward so that
the new fold rests on the top
edge of the bottom flaps.

Sharply fold the top
corners down so that the
new folds are approximately
¾" apart at the top.

Hold A in place with
your right index finger and
B in place with your right
middle finger. Notice that
the top flap is formed into a
hood shape and that there is
a flap to the left of the hood
that stands away from it.
Smooth that flap so that it
conforms to the shape and

rests on top of the hood.
Next, squash the hood flat.

by making a tiny valley fold
with each.

25 Open the fold to a 60°
angle. Turn the model over
from side to side. Stand the
model.

26 Display your Jack-O’Lantern. If you would like
to use it as a flat decoration,

do not fold the bottom flap
down in step 22. You can
paste the flat version onto a
greeting card or use it as a
window decoration.

27 For added fun, you can individualize the facial features and
the shape of the pumpkin by making small changes to the folds.
To change the eyes and the mouth, vary the amount of paper
folded over and over in step 2. In step 11, change how far you
fold over the flaps. This will affect the width of the mouth, the
distance between the eyes, and the overall shape of the pumpkin.
Vary the distance between the folds in step 13 to change the
shape of the face. The amount that the bottom flap is folded
should be changed only very slightly at first because it may effect
how well the model stands. Take the same care in modifying step
14 which may also be used to change the pumpkin’s shape. You
can also modify its shape by varying steps 15, 23, and 24.
