hree thousand miles is a long way to go for
a girls’ night, but that’s essentially what I did
a few weeks ago. A quickie trip to London allowed
me to hang out with my friends Carla and
Amy, whom I’ve adored since our fresh-
man year of college. The hours we spent
drinking tea, lattes, and wine, shopping
and sightseeing, were just excuses to yak
on. And the conversation ventured places
it rarely does with new friends. Why is that? I asked you all on Facebook;
this list combines your reasons with a few of mine:

“You don’t have to explain yourself; they just understand you.”
–Sari Hacker

Laser hair removal is a perfectly acceptable topic for the dinner table.

They knew me when I was much prettier but seem, mysteriously,
to nd me lovelier now. I feel the same about them.

We were at one another’s weddings and remember the part where
everyone promised to support the new couple in their married life.
Maybe that’s why, even when we are kvetching about our partners, we try to
act like glue, not dynamite.

I can tell, just by looking at their faces, when I’m being
kind of a jerk.

Our book and movie recs are eerily on-target.

“They know your story, your faults, your embarrassing
moments, and they still love you!” –
Cynthia Nelson Snoe

Schadenfreude is completely out of the question.

Who else would let you try her La Mer serum and claim
you look younger already?

We cheer one another’s achievements, and at the same
time, they understand completely when I admit to some-
times feeling like a fraud.

We’ve started to forget one another’s stories, so they can
be successfully retold with a little tipsy prompting.

They are very, very similar to sisters, with none of the
nonsense of sisterhood.

“It doesn’t matter how much time has passed; we can

pick it right up where we left o.” –
Katrina Namad
Thanks, ladies. See you soon.

Morning Magic
After reading “It’s Come to This:
Date Morning” [February], I have
to share: Early in our marriage,
my husband told me he thought
mornings were the most romantic
part of the day. Every Sunday, we’d
read the paper, do the crossword
puzzles, and eat breakfast in bed.
Decades later, breakfast is still
the highlight of the day and still
romantic.
—Lucille Ray, Columbus, OH
it’s all good
I absolutely loved the February
issue. From the Team Red Fashion,
Beauty, and Food sections to
fashion ideas under $50, Jessica
Simpson’s story, and the roundup
of best travel finds, I enjoyed it all.
Job superbly done.
—Glenda Mitchell,
Dumfries, VA

We asked on Facebook and tWitter…
What’s your no-Fail date night?

“Date nights in can be super-romantic. Plus, zero travel time means
more time spent together.”
—Beatrice Strnad

“Dinner and live music. And great ‘dessert.’ ” —Donna Herrington

“Staying home [to] drink cocktails and eat pizza with a movie.” —Ruby Cavazos

“Dinner out at our favorite restaurant: good food and no hurry.” —Joyce Wells

“Tons of good movies with my baby!” —Jean Collins
“My employer hosted live
on-air broadcasts that went
out to stores all over the
country, and I was all set
up to do one. Just before it
was my turn to speak, I had
to go to the restroom. I
raced out of the studio, and
since I had no idea where
the bathroom was, I yelled
to a person in the hallway
for directions. I found it,
used it, then ran back to
the studio and went on-air.
Once the cameras were o,

one of the crew noted that
they didn’t know I was
leaving, so no one turned
o my microphone. Sure
enough, all the listeners
could hear everything
from my bathroom trip—
start to finish.”
—H.R., McKinney, TX
“I went for a massage in a
foreign country, and when
the masseuse left the room
for me to get ready, I found
a little packet. I opened it
up in the low-light room,
and I assumed it was a
shower cap to protect my
hair. When she returned,
she burst out laughing: It
was underwear. And I had
it on my head!”

style For a strong lady
I was diagnosed with multiple
sclerosis in July 2012, and as
a result I can no longer wear high
heels. Last year for my birthday,
I had all of my family and friends
post pictures to Facebook
in their favorite heels so I could
live vicariously through them.
It sounds like a silly thing,
and I am grateful to still be here
to “miss” heels, because I know
my diagnosis could have been
much worse. But I loved how
they made me feel sexy at only
5 feet 2 inches. Got any style
ideas for life in flats?
—Sarah
Quezada, Ontario, CA
Fashion director Audrey Slater
says, “I love your attitude, Sarah,
and you’ll love your look if you
make some minor adjustments.
Pick pants and skirts with high
waists: They’ll make your legs
seem longer. Slim, ankle-length
pants, worn with a cropped,

flattering.” And here are some

Find your “fantasy pants”
Designer Tracy Reese knows, “shopping for pants can be
bathing-suit-level hard—hours in a dressing room for just a meh fit.”
Those days are done: Here’s how to get a winning pair every time.
Every season when I’m
designing, my sta and I talk
about our “fantasy pants,” ones
that will look
and feel great on
our bodies. Turns out, they
always have three universally
attering features: They sit at
your natural waist (right above
your belly button), are slightly
tapered, and have a little stretch.
My current fantasy pair also has
a relaxed t in the thighs, like
the ones Hilary is wearing
here, so they don’t show lumps

Wake up those eyes
“Every woman wants big, beautiful eyes that make her look
younger and more rested,” says makeup artist Mally Roncal.
Her easy tips get you there, even in the morning rush.
START with a neutral,
gleamy eyeshadow
Brush a sheer champagne shadow
(which works on any skin tone)
across your eyelids and at the inner
corners, then sweep a little right
under your lower lashes. You don’t
even need a mirror for this step.
line your upper lids I like to use
navy liner—it makes the whites of your
eyes look brighter. Work the pencil tip into
your lash line, then sketch it back and forth
just along the outer lashes. Penciling the
entire length of your lid can actually make
eyes look smaller.
and a bit

Ali’s 10-minute body slimmer
Alison Sweeney, queen of fitting in fitness anytime, anywhere, shows you
the speedy workout she does in her dressing room.

Single-arm lateral raise
Sit in a chair with one end of a band
tucked under both feet and the other
end in your right hand, by your right side
(shown above). Extend your left arm out

to shoulder level, then lift your right arm
to the side as high as you can. Lower your
right arm to the start position, then lift it
back up again. Do 12 to 15 reps. Switch
sides and repeat.
Overhead squat
Grab a resistance band and stand
up straight, with your legs
hip-width apart. Raise the band overhead
with your arms extended, then pull it taut
and hold the tension. Squat down,
keeping the weight in your heels and
your arms pointing up. Do 12 to 15 reps.
Seated row
Sit on the floor with your legs
straight and loop a resistance
band around your feet, holding an end in
each hand. Keep your elbows close to
your sides and pull the band in by your
waist, chest up, as if you are rowing.
Pause and return to start. Do 10 to 12 reps.
Watch Ali demo all these moves at
redbookmag.com/bands.
I
t’s so tempting to say,
“I didn’t get to do a full
workout or make it to the
gym; I guess I just won’t
exercise today.” But the
fact is, you can still

challenge your muscles
and stick to your tness
goals. My secret? A
resistance band—basically
a long piece of stretchy
latex that allows you to
perform strength-training
exercises without weights.
You can hide one next to
your sofa and, when you’re
watching TV, bust out a
few moves during
commercial breaks. I keep
the bands in my dressing
room on
Days of our Lives
and on set on
The Biggest
Loser
, and I stu one in
my bag when I travel so I
can do some toning in my
hotel room. Just a
-minute routine in the
morning leaves me
energized. And when I’m
done, I feel like I’ve
earned
my shower.
Try it! 3 easy resistance-band moves

> Adjust the resistance—and
how hard you’re working—by
shortening the strap. (Loop it
around your hands till you feel
more of a tug.)
>
Don’t just let the band snap
after you pull it in—release it
back to the start position with
control. You’ll get more from
your workout that way.
>
Feel free to multitask. You
can’t exactly do a conference
call while you’re running on a
treadmill (believe me, I’ve
tried). But you can use a band
when you’re on the phone,
and no one will know.
>
You can order resistance
bands from amazon.com for
about $15, then get started
with the moves below. Have
time for a head-to-toe session?

These rope drawer pulls
($12 each;
westelm.com) came with long screws
that stuck out inside, so I subbed in
shorter ones. I also used washers to
make the handles sturdier.
The legs
are Ikea
Metrik 9⁄-inch
drawer handles
($8.99 for 2).
I covered them
with white spray
epoxy; it coats
metal easily
and is water-
resistant—great
for a bathroom.

Once dry, I
secured them
with a heavy-duty
adhesive.

What a cool Ikea hack!
Decor guru Emily Henderson turned a $15 Ikea
nightstand into adorable bathroom storage in one
afternoon. This is one D.I.Y. that anyone can pull off.

T
here are all sorts of Ikea “hacks”—
where you fancy up one of the
company’s basics—but I nd that the
less you add, the more rened the
result. For this update on the Rast
nightstand, I stuck to paint, drawer
pulls, and legs that elevate the piece
literally and guratively. You could
also top it with a mirror for a chic side
table or cute contact paper for a kid’s
room. Take a risk: It only costs !
Drill before painting
to avoid chips.
The Rast is unfinished pine, so any
paint will work. I used some leftover

white that I keep for wall touch-ups.
