2021 Jacob Colby Hutcheson Memorial Scholarship

The Jacob Colby Hutcheson Memorial Scholarship is a scholarship created in honor and memory of Jacob Colby
Hutcheson, son of William and Heather Clegg and Skipper Hutcheson. Jacob was a member of Covenant Church
and very involved in the youth group. Jacob was also very active in Beta Club, Make a Difference, 4-H, and YClub. He was a straight A student with many academic achievements. Jacob was a loving person who displayed
many great character traits, including being a wonderful friend to all he met no matter who they were. The purpose
of this scholarship is to remember how important education was to Jacob and to remind students that they should
dream big!
The Jacob Colby Hutcheson Memorial Scholarship is a scholarship awarded to a member of the 2020 graduating
class of Appling County High School who will be attending a post-secondary educational institution. This
scholarship is for a minimum of $250.00. Scholarships will be awarded by members of the Jacob Colby Hutcheson
Memorial Foundation based on essays submitted as well as information provided on the applications.

Essay Guidelines
The essay submitted with the scholarship application will be on the topic: “How can I make a difference in the
world we live in?” This essay must be typed and can be 1 or 2 pages, double spaced. Please DO NOT include
your name on the essay, only attach it to your scholarship application. Essays will be judged by a panel of 3 judges
to select a winner. Because fairness was so important to Jacob, judges will not know whose essay they are reading.
Essays will be numbered and matched with the application. Essays, with scholarship application attached, are to be
turned in to the Guidance Office by the deadline for local scholarships. The winners will be announced at Senior
Honors Night.

Guidelines for Scholarship Money Awarded
Money is not awarded directly to a student. Monetary award will be given to the educational institution selected by
the winner upon enrollment of his/her first semester after graduation from high school. Applicants may select a
university, college, or technical college. Monetary award is forfeited if not used within one year of applicant’s high
school graduation date. It is the responsibility of the student to notify the foundation, which educational institution
has been selected upon enrollment.
