Manchester 2002 Commonwealth Games Experience CV:
NAME:

Mr. Andrew Bradbury

JOB TITLE:

CAD Manager and Venue Security Co-ordinator/ Manager (NCC).

YEAR:

2000 - 2002

In December 2000 I was recruited by Manchester 2002 Ltd to help plan and co-ordinate the
Manchester Commonwealth Games the largest multi-sport event ever to be held in Britain.
Originally I was employed as the CAD Manager were I had to supervise a team of six CAD
operators for 14 months producing the venue overlay plan drawings for all 37 sport and non-sport
venues. The 'over-lay' planning and ‘fit-out’ process was critical to the overall success of the
games and involved the modification of existing buildings and the reconfiguration of the existing
use of space at every venue, whether external or internal and temporary or permanent. Every
venue was surveyed and existing floor plans produced. Working with the fit-out managers, plans
were drawn showing the position of all alterations and temporary structures; grandstands,
marquees, crowd barriers and other facilities. Another set of plans was also created for the
emergency service’s that showed emergency vehicle access routes and rendezvous points.
In May 2002 I was transferred across to the Security Division because of my previous stewarding
and security experience and knowledge of various sports venues including the Millennium
Stadium in Cardiff. I became a member of the Sportcity Security Team involved in the Mag & Bag
(magnetic archway and bag search) operation around the City of Manchester Stadium. I was part
of the team which trained 600 dedicated volunteers in the use of hand held metal detectors and
bag search techniques looking for prohibited items on visitors entering Sportcity. During the event
I supervised teams of volunteer’s at various spectator entrance gates around Sportcity and had

to integrate them with the ShowSec stewards, x-ray operators and Police Officers.
During the competition stages of the Games I also became the Venue Security Co-ordinator/
Manager at the 3,000 capacity National Cycling Centre (NCC). I worked closely with the Venue
Safety Officer and the other Section Managers as it was my responsibility to manage the
complete security operation at the venue. I had too brief and oversee the ShowSec stewards and
integrate them with the Event Services volunteers. I also had to supervise the Event Control
Room (VCC) staff and the security guards at all the vehicle and pedestrian access gates. I had to
liaise and assist Greater Manchester Police (GMP) with their operations including; attendance by
the specialist search teams (POLSA) and VIP close protection officers in preparation of the
planned visit by the Deputy Prime Minister and The Earl and Countess of Wessex, and a surprise
visit by Her Royal Highness Princess Anne.
It was also my responsibility along with the Transport Manager to supervise the athletics
movements after both the Opening & Closing Ceremonies from the City of Manchester Stadium
into a temporary bus station at the NCC. I had to calculate the bus station capacity, crowd flow
rates, assess pinch-points and monitor the movement of approximately 5,000 athletics and
officials onto one hundred coaches during a two-hour period. I also had to liaise with the Police
before and during the operation and brief and supervise a team of ShowSec stewards.
ADDITIONAL TRAINING:
In addition to the above responsibilities I also attended several training sessions including;

Venue Management – the various roles and responsibilities, and incident management.
Mag and Bag (magnetic archway and bag search) Sportcity Security Team training.
Venue Control Centre (VCC) operations; radio use, code words and procedures.
National Cycling Centre (NCC) core management table top and venue training exercises.
First Aid at Work, HSE approved four day training course with Manchester City Council
