Application for Membership
INTRODUCTION
We are seeking alumni to help the University and alumni leaders create a meaningful
alumni experience and to engage fellow alumni in opportunities that contribute to that
experience. In the past few years, the Alumni Association has made significant
infrastructure changes to increase the number and ways alumni can makes a personal
or professional commitment by giving back to the University which personifies and
supports the GGU mission, including:
Recognizing outstanding volunteerism, distinguished and community service,
philanthropy, and alum of the year at our annual Alumni Awards Luncheon each
October
Thanking the thousands of alumni donors with a personal thank you phone call or
note
Welcoming new alumni at orientations and graduations
Hosting professional development events and activities where faculty, students,
alumni and industry leaders share their expertise and knowledge, (i.e. Silicon
Valley Forum, Beat the Clock MCLE seminars and reunions, etc.)
Creating a forum for career networking for alumni at informal mixers hosted after
work at locations around the Bay Area and other regional receptions
QUALIFICATIONS
What makes a good Golden Gate University Alumni Association board member?
Candidates for Board members should meet several of these qualifications.
Golden Gate University Alum from a degreed program
Proactive advocate for the University
History of financial support to the University (gifts, giving societies, etc) – or is
willing to demonstrate financial support
Past volunteer for University events and programs
Breadth of experience – non-profit, fundraising
Past leadership experience
Willingness to openly interact and engage students and other fellow alumni
Currently using his/her degree in a professional capacity or is retired
EXPECTATIONS
Board members of the Golden Gate University Alumni Association lead the efforts to
foster beneficial connections among alumni, students, faculty, administration, and staff.
Our continued success depends on the personal commitment and active involvement of
a select group of elected individuals, who embrace the privilege to serve and the
responsibility to lead. Board members agree to uphold the board’s mission and meet the
responsibilities and expectations detailed below. These include, but are not limited to:
Advocacy and Personal Involvement
Advocate - be well informed to convey the University’s mission and strategies,
programs, strength and needs.
Board Meeting Attendance - attend pre-scheduled board meetings (3 minimum).

Event and Program Participation - attend 3-5 (minimum) alumni programs,
events, and encourage/invite other alumni to participate; volunteer to support
these programs and events. Attendance (or gift ticket purchase) is expected at
the annual awards luncheon in October. Attend one alumni thank-a-thon per year.
Leadership Development
Board Recruitment - identify strong candidates for the board who will represent
the alumni effectively. Identify a successor to recommend for a board position
when his/her term is up.
Mentor - be a partner/mentor to a fellow board member.
Strategic Planning - participate in setting annual board/committee goals and
objectives at the annual retreat and throughout the year.
Advise – provide input to board leadership regarding alumni services and
programs.
Financial Expectations
Annual Support - make a significant personal leadership gift. Gifts or first
payments should be received by December 31 each year.
PROCESS
The process to become a board member is as follows:
1. Show intent to contribute to the University in a significant way.
2. Be able to meet the qualifications and expectations.
3. If you believe you can meet or exceed the qualifications and expectations, submit
an application with a copy of your résumé and statement of purpose.
4. Candidates that meet the qualifications and expectations will be assigned a
board mentor who will contact you. This board mentor will guide you through the
rest of the process.
5. An interview panel will consist of one current board member, the Alumni
Association Board of Directors President, and a University Advancement staff
member. Each person will interview the candidate.
6. The board will convene afterwards to discuss the interview results and render a
decision.
7. The candidate will be contacted to discuss the decision and next steps.
