Take a 60cm square piece of pattern
paper and draw a vertical line to the
right side of the paper, from the top to
the bottom. starting 2.5cm down,
square across from this line using your
nape of neck to desired sleeve length
measurement, this will become line ab.

1

Then mark down along the vertical
line, the measurement from the centre
of your collarbone to your waist, creating
line ac. square across from c, the same
distance as ab, creating line cd. square
up from d, the same distance as ac. This
should resemble a rectangle [1].

2

Take your waist measurement and
divide it by four and multiply by 1.4.
From c, mark this distance along line
cd, creating point e. make sure this
amount is equal or more than the
circumference of your bust, plus 10cm.

3

Then square up to line ab, creating
point F. line eF must be parallel to
ac and bd. Take the measurement from
your shoulder seam to the fullest point
on your bust and subtract 3cm. This
must always be in centimetres. mark this
distance along line eF, starting from F,
creating point g.

4

square across from g to line bd
creating point H. From g, mark down
2cm on line eF and label point i. From
point i to H draw a smooth curved
concave line. This will become your
underarm [2]. measure down 7cm on line
ac and mark point J.

5

measure from a along line ab, 13cm
for sizes 8–12, and 14cm for sizes 14–
18 and label k. This sets the width of the
neckline. starting at J, square out 2cm
and continue the line into a smooth
curve to meet point k. This is your
neckline [3].

6

The exceptions to the above are, if
your waist measurement is larger than
the shoulder sleeve width, still mark point
e, but as this will be wider than d, do not
square up to F. instead, mark your
shoulder to bust measurement, minus
3cm on line bd (down from b to d) and
label this g.

From g, square across 2cm towards
the centre front and label H. From H,
square down 2cm and label i. Join e to i
with a diagonal line. From point i to g,
draw a smooth curved concave line [4].

draw a grainline parallel to line ac.
draw a fold line on line ac and label
centre front /centre back. This block does
not have seam allowances [5]. make a
toile to check the fit. To do this, trace off
the block, then add 1.5cm to all edges for
seam allowance, except the centre front.

cut out the two pieces in fabric.
Join the front and back pieces right
sides together at the shoulder seams and
the side seams. You do not need to finish
the toile. Try on to check it fits. You can
then alter as necessary on the pattern,
but remember it is not meant to be tight
fitting.
