WELCOME TO MY WORLD

Track 1.12 / Bey_A2_U01_010_1.12

Hi, welcome to my city! Most visitors arrive at Melbourne
Airport or at Melbourne Central Station. The station’s
in the city centre near the library. It’s also near my flat.
My parents have got a restaurant and we live over the
restaurant.
The Melbourne Museum is about ten minutes from our
flat and there’s a shopping centre near our flat too. I
often go shopping there. I sometimes go to the stadium

with my dad. We watch cricket and Australian football.
My favourite place is Federation Square or Fed Square.
I meet my friends there at weekends because there are
free music concerts. In the summer we sometimes go
to Luna Park theme park. When we have visitors we do
a tour of Overnewton Castle or go to Eureka Tower. The
city looks fantastic from up there!

Teresa: To the library to get some books. Then to the
station to meet my grandma from the train.
She wants to go to the art museum.
Sienna: Is she here for a few days?

Teresa: Yes. Tomorrow she wants to do shopping at
the shopping centre. And at the weekend she
wants to see the cricket match at the stadium.
She loves cricket!

City guide – things to do, shopping, art and culture,
food and drink

Our sister city Osaka
Two and a half million people live in Osaka. The city
has two main centres: Namba and Umeda. In Namba at
the famous Bunraku Theatre you can see plays with
one-metre-high Japanese puppets. There are also many
good shops and cinemas.
Near the station in Umeda, there’s a big shopping centre
under the city. The HEP Five shopping centre is also there
and it’s got a hundred-metre-tall big wheel on the roof!
There are also lots of cafés and restaurants – people
in Osaka love food.
Osaka Castle is very popular with visitors. In the main
tower there’s a museum about the castle’s long history.
Visit the castle in the spring and have a picnic in the
beautiful park next to it.
Melbourne Extra
Extra tips, extra information, extra fun!
Melbourne has six ‘sister cities’:
Osaka, Japan (our first sister city in 1978)
Tianjin, China (1980)
Thessaloniki, Greece (1984)
Boston, USA (1985)
St Petersburg, Russia (1989)
Milan, Italy (2004)

Riley:

In my family there’s my mum and my dad, my sister
Rose and me – just the four of us.
All my friends have got big families and I like that. A
small family is a bit boring.
Akari:
I’ve got four big brothers and they all love watching sport
on TV. My parents like watching TV too. My grandparents
– my grandma and grandad – live with us – and they
watch TV all the time. It’s very noisy in our house.
Antonio:
I’m an only child and it’s just me and my mum at home.
But I’ve got lots of aunts and uncles and cousins. They all
live near us, so there are always lots of people in our flat.

Matthew:
Hi, I’m Matthew and this is home.
The tour starts in my bedroom. It’s
small, but there’s space for all my

things in the cupboards and on the
shelves. This is my collection of
harmonicas.

This door’s the bathroom. Listen!
Matthew’s sister: Matthew! Get out!
Matthew:
This is my sister’s room. I hardly
ever go in here but she’s in the
shower. She never tidies up so it’s
usually a mess … yep, it’s a mess.
Let’s look in the wardrobe.

She’s got all her old teddies.
This is my parents’ room. Parents
always get the big room.

Let’s go down to the living room.
There’s the TV and there’s the
armchair. Mum always sits there. Hi
Mum!
Matthew’s mum: Shhh!
Matthew:
We often watch films in the
evening. I always sit on the sofa
but Fuse is there now. Say hello,
Fuse!
And here’s the kitchen, the washing
machine, cooker, fridge ... dinner.
Mum sometimes cooks but Dad

usually makes dinner. Hi Dad!
Matthew’s dad:
Hi Matt.

Unit 2, Page 22, Reading
Track 1.25 / Bey_A2_U02_022_1.25

Hi to our new friends in Austin, Texas. Here’s a
description of life in Tromsø.
Tromsø is in the north of Norway. It’s above the Arctic
Circle, so there are 60 days in the summer when the
sun shines 24 hours a day. On June 23rd we celebrate
Midsummer’s Eve. We go to the beach and have a
barbecue. At midnight the beach is full of people!
In winter there are 60 days when it’s dark all day and
night. It snows a lot and it’s really cold. But if you stay at
home you feel tired and sad, so people go out. We play
in the snow every day and go to a café or the cinema at
the weekend. Winter’s a good time to see the Northern
Lights.
Schooldays are the same all year. School starts at 8.30
and we have lunch at 11.00. At 2.15 we go home and
do homework. We have dinner at 4.30. In the evening
we see our friends.

This is the kitchen. There’s the cooker and the washing
machine. There are lots of cupboards to put things in.
And there’s my favourite thing, the fridge.
This is the living room. There’s a big sofa and an
armchair in here and a nice cream carpet on the floor.
My bedroom’s here. That’s my desk with a lamp on it,

the window and curtains, …
… my wardrobe, where I keep my clothes, my bookcase
and the shelves where I put other things.

Narrator: L isten to five conversations. You will hear
each conversation twice. Choose the correct
answer for each question, A, B or C.

Here is an example:
Narrator: What’s Charlie’s first activity in the morning?
Girl:
What’s the first thing you do in the morning
Charlie?
Boy:
I have a shower in the evening, before bed.
So when I get up, I get dressed and then I
brush my hair.
Narrator: The answer is C. Now let’s start.
Narrator: 1 Which is Susan’s room?
Girl 1:
Is this your room, Susan?
Susan:
Yep.
Girl 1:
It’s nice. I hardly ever tidy mine so it’s always
in a mess.
Susan:
Mine sometimes gets untidy but I hate it
when I can’t find something. It’s

really tidy now because I’ve got a visitor.
Girl 1:
Who?

Susan:
You!
Narrator: Now listen again.

Narrator: 4 Which is the right note?
Mark:
Hi Jack!
Jack:
Hey, Mark!
Mark:
Listen. Are you free tonight?
Jack:
No, I’ve got my drama class. It’s every
Monday. Why?
Mark:
I’ve got a good video game from the library.
Jack:
What about Wednesday?
Mark:
Tomorrow’s better for me. Is that OK for
you?
Jack:
Errr ... OK. What time?
Mark:
At seven. At my house.
Jack:
Great, see you then!
Narrator: Now listen again.
Narrator: 5 Which is the right station?
Woman:

xcuse me. Can you tell me the way to the
E
station, please?
Girl: Which one? There’s the main station and a
small one just round the corner.
Woman: The main station.
Girl: OK, you go straight on until you see a park
on the left. The park’s in front of the station.
You can’t miss it.
Woman: Thanks.
Narrator: Now listen again.

Narrator: 2 What time does the boy’s train leave?
Boy 1:
xcuse me. What time’s the next train to
E
Hull?
Woman: Er ... let me see ... there’s one at 14.05.
Boy 1:
What time is it now?
Boy 2:
It’s five to two.
Boy 1:
Mm ... so it leaves in ten minutes ...
Boy 2:
I need to go to the shops.
Boy 1:
Sorry, when’s the next one?
Woman: It’s at 14.50.

Boy 2:
Let’s get that one.
Boy 1:
OK.
Narrator: Now listen again.
Narrator: 3 Where’s the noise from?
Girl:
What’s that noise?
Mum:
What noise?
Girl:
Listen. It’s the washing machine.
Mum:
The washing machine never makes that
sound. Maybe it’s the cooker, or the fridge.
They’re sometimes noisy.
Girl:
No, it isn’t. Mum, look! There’s water coming
under the kitchen door.
Mum:
Oh, no! You’re right!

Year 8.
Reporter: Do you like it?
Jon: Yes, I do. The school building’s amazing.
Every day we walk along a running track to
go into the school.
Reporter: Are there a lot of students?
Jon: Yes, there are. There are around 800
students.
Reporter: When do you start and finish school?
Jon: We start at 8.30 in the morning. We finish
at 3.15 but I usually don’t get home until
5.30 because I have extra classes.
Reporter: Do you get tired?
Jon: No, I don’t. Well, maybe sometimes. But the
extra classes mean more dance and music.
I like music a lot.
Reporter: What subjects do you do?
Jon: We do all the usual school subjects like
science and history. Maths is my favourite
subject. In Year 8 we do extra English and
maths.
Reporter: Are there any school rules?
Jon: Yes, there are. We all wear a uniform. And
we can’t take phones inside the school.

but we don’t spend all day in classrooms.
Reporter: What do you do?
Bella: We go to local farms and organisations to
learn in the real world. And we visit other
countries.
Reporter: Does the school have classrooms?
Bella: Yes, it does. But the school doesn’t believe

My name’s Kath. We go to Homeways School in London
and our uniform is our own design. It’s a long grey skirt
with a white shirt ... an optional blue tie and a dark blue
jacket. We also wear pink trainers which are very cool.
We have a school backpack to carry stuff. In winter we
wear a grey jumper, a school scarf, gloves and a coat to

School lunch around the world

Our class is doing a project about school lunches
around the world. Read other students’ descriptions and
add a description of your school lunch. Don’t forget to

send a photo!
Mikkel, Denmark
All students here take a packed lunch to school. I
usually have brown bread with cheese and salad and an
apple. We can’t take any unhealthy food like chocolate,
sweets or fizzy drinks.
Jalissa, USA
We eat things like taco salad, pizza or burgers. We
always get milk or juice and some vegetables or fruit.
Dae-Ho, Korea
I like the food at my school but we don’t get many
different things. We usually get soup, some vegetables
with rice and a lot of salad. We don’t get much meat.
Mathilde, France
We have salad or a vegetable dish, and then meat with
sauce and potatoes or fish with lemon. My favourite
is mussels with chips. Then we have yoghurt or some
cheese, and after that we have dessert.
Camila, Ecuador
There isn’t any lunch at my school, so I have lunch at
home with my family after school. We usually eat soup
and then rice with vegetables and chicken or fish.

IT’S GOOD FOR YOU!

But I hate going to bed early, I don’t feel
tired then.
Dad: My son goes to bed really late. He’s always
busy with things. I tell him that he doesn’t
sleep enough. I tell him all the time: ‘When
you don’t sleep enough, you eat more, you
don’t feel well and you feel unhappy and
stressed.’ But he doesn’t listen to me.
Doctor: Your body and your sleeping times change
when you’re a teenager. This means
teenagers prefer going to bed much later,
usually after 11pm. Then they’re tired
because most schools start early. But
teenagers need eight and a half to nine
hours sleep every night – or they can’t lead
a healthy life. As I tell my patients: sleep is
food for the brain.

THE NEXT BIG THING: THE FINAL
Channel 7, Saturday, 7pm
The Show
The final is here. There are just two competitors now,
hockey player Judy Cole, and tennis player Mahesh
Nayar. Only one can be our next big thing and one of the
future superstars of their sport.
They’re both strong and fast. They’re both competitive.
But viewers of this programme know that sports stars
need other abilities too. Can they think quickly? Can
they play well in a team? Do they train hard? To find out,
watch the final this Saturday.
The Competitors
Judy’s only 13 but she plays in her city’s under 15 team.
She can’t run very fast, but she can think quickly and
she always makes good decisions – and she can get
better. At the moment she doesn’t always communicate
well with other players on her team and she gets
stressed easily in difficult matches. But she’s working
hard on these things.
Mahesh has a natural talent. He can serve fast and he
moves very well when he’s playing. But his game goes
up and down. He usually plays brilliantly, but there are

days when he can’t concentrate and he plays badly. The
problem is, he can’t practise every day. He also wants to
be a doctor, so he studies a lot too.

Can you play badminton?

I can be here for 7.
Can you stay late on Wednesdays? We
sometimes have matches.
No, I can’t. I’ve got a piano lesson and I can’t

Yes, she can. She’s always on time. But she
can’t come on Wednesdays.
So can she play in competitions for the club?
No, she can’t. She can train with us but she

1
Gavin: How do you play this?
Jan:
You’re the chicken and a fox is looking for you.
He’s coming! Go in that house. When he finds
you, you have to throw things at him. If you hit
him, he moves slowly. OK, he knows where you
are. Get that shoe. Open the door. Now, throw
the shoe at him. Good! A direct hit!
2
Gavin: First, you have to choose a character.
Jan: OK, I’m the girl. Now what?
Gavin: You have to run though the city and win the
race against the other character. OK, run. Now
climb up that building.
Jan:

What do I have to do now?
Gavin: Jump. Jump to the next building. Quickly! The
other character’s coming but you’re winning.
Go! Yes! You’re the winner!
3
Gavin: Is that a new game?
Jan:
No, it’s really old. Some aliens want to destroy
your planet and you have to stop them.
Gavin: Can I play?
Jan:
OK. Use this button to start the game. Now
use these buttons to move left and right, and
this button to shoot the aliens. Good, that’s it.
If they shoot you, you lose. Shoot! Don’t stop!
Uh-oh! You can never stop the aliens.

We haven’t got many photos of Grandad

fifth photo, he’s already middle-aged. He’s

Yes, getting old fast! I don’t know how old

Life in England in the year 1000
What was life like in England over 1,000 years ago?
Well, there weren’t many people – between two and
three million (today there are over 53 million). There
weren’t many towns and home for 90% of English people
was the country. Their houses were simple with only one
or two rooms.
We know that food was healthy because people were
quite tall (men were about 172cm) and their teeth were
good. There were usually two meals a day – with knives
and spoons but no forks. A typical meal was bread with
eggs, cheese or fish. There wasn’t much meat and there
was no sugar, tea, coffee or chocolate.

But life in the 11th century wasn’t easy. Most people
were poor farmers and work in the fields was hard. A
lot of people were hungry in the summer months before
the harvest. When people were ill, there weren’t any
hospitals or medicine. Adults were usually dead before
they were 40 and babies were often dead before their
first birthday.
As their lives were short, people were married when they
were teenagers – girls from when they were 12 and boys
from 14. In poor families children were field workers like
the adults. Education was only for the rich.

Amelia’s diary, 1845
August 10th
This is our fifth month on our trip to Oregon. It’s very
hot. Our cow died two days ago and we have no milk.
Yesterday we walked 15 miles. Today we’re resting
because my sister Emma wasn’t well last night.
August 14th
Emma’s baby was born yesterday – a healthy boy. My
mother cried but we all feel cheerful again. We bought
some clothes from the Indians this morning, they were
very friendly.
August 21st
We’re nearly there – after 2,170 miles! ‘Two more days,’
my father told us at dinner. We talked about our new life.
I’m so happy.
William’s diary, 1912
12th April
We left England two days ago on the ship. It’s so big!
Yesterday we stopped in Ireland and then we started to
sail to New York. In the evening we met the Bloomberg
Family. They were nice. Their daughter Josephine was a
bit shy and serious.
13th April
This morning Josephine told us about New York. I can’t
wait to be there.

Last month I went with my family to Turkey. We flew by
plane from Toronto to Istanbul. The flight took 11 hours!
It was very boring and I couldn’t sleep. At the airport
we got into a taxi and drove (very fast) to the hotel. The
hotel was OK but it wasn’t fantastic.

The next day I woke up very early and we had breakfast.
There were eggs, some bread, yoghurt, tomatoes and
cheese. It was different but I liked it.
After breakfast we walked into the centre and looked
around the city. The weather was terrible. It was cold
and windy. We did some sightseeing and I had a great
time. We visited the Sultan Ahmed Mosque (the Blue
Mosque) which was BIG!!! I took millions of photos
outside.

In the afternoon we walked through the Grand Bazaar
(it’s got 3,000 shops!). It was an amazing place but I
didn’t buy anything. I don’t speak Turkish but a lot of

Reporter: Well, in 1928, when he was 15 years
old, Palle Huld entered a competition in a
Danish newspaper.
Presenter: Did he win?
Reporter: Yes, he did. He won a trip around the world.
But there were some rules. He could travel
by any form of transport but not by plane.
And he had to complete the trip in 46 days.
Presenter: So was it like the Jules Verne novel, Around
the World in 80 Days?
Reporter: Yes, it was. In fact, the competition was for
Jules Verne’s 100th anniversary.
Presenter: What happened? Did he complete the trip?
Reporter: Palle left Denmark on March 1st and travelled
alone by land and sea. He went through
England, Scotland, Canada, Japan, Poland
and Germany. He went around the world and
returned to Copenhagen 44 days later.

OK.

2 Do the maths. How much does everything cost? Only
take that much money with you.
3 Look online first. Internet shops are often cheaper.
Look at prices online before you go shopping.
4 Find the facts. Look online for information about
things like mobile phones. Know what you need.
5 Ask Mum or Dad. Get a parent’s opinion about
expensive things and not just when they’re paying.
At the shops ...
6 Compare prices. Some shops are more expensive
than others. To save money, compare prices before you
buy something.
7 Don’t forget quality. Compare the quality, not just
the price, especially in clothes shops and shoe shops.
Sometimes prices are lower but the quality’s worse.
8 Simple is better. Buy simple clothes. You can wear
them when fashions change and make them more
interesting with accessories.
9 Take your time. If you can’t decide, don’t spend your
money. Leave the shop. A slow decision is better than a
bad decision.
Back at home ...
10 Leave the price on. When you get home, don’t take
off the price tag. You can always change things later if

you don’t like them.

Jack:

Where are you going, Jack?
To the shopping centre. I need a new jacket.
What about the local shops?
They’re more expensive than the shopping
centre.
Will: Yes, but they’re nearer, so you don’t have to get
a bus. And the service is better.
Tracy: Or what about the second-hand shop? It’s
cheaper than the shopping centre and the
clothes are more original.
Jack: The thing is, Maria’s waiting for me at the
shopping centre.
Tracy: OK, I understand. See you later!

Man:

In many European countries we use euros and
cents for prices. A euro is 100 cents. We also
use the metric system for measurements. For
distances we use kilometres. For our height
we use metres and centimetres. For weights,
we use kilograms or kilos. For volumes we

use litres.

Woman: In the USA we use dollars and cents for
prices. One dollar is 100 cents. We don’t
use the metric system for measurements.
For distances, we use miles. For our height
we use feet and inches. For weights we use
pounds. For volumes we use gallons and
pints.
Man:

In the UK we use pounds and pence for
prices. One pound is 100 pence. For
measurements, we use the metric system and
the non-metric system.
