ENGLISH FOR AUTOMOBILE
ENGINEERING
INDUSTRIAL PROCESSES
AND PETROL ENGINES
Presentation
Read the text and label the flow diagram with sentences a,
b, c and d:
Die casting is a common process in the engineering
industry. It is used to produce many machine components.
There are two main processes: hot chamber die casting
and cold chamber die casting. Cold chamber die casting is
a suitable casting process for metals with a high melting
point, such as aluminum. For some metals with a low
melting point, such as a zinc alloy, a process called hot
chamber die casting is used. For example, a carburetor
body is produced by this method. There are three main
stages in the process. In the first stage, the dies are closed.
Then the injection plunger is forced downwards and the
molten metal is forced into the dies. Finally, in the third
stage, the dies are opened in order to remove the
carburetor body.
Presentation
a. The dies are opened.
b. The metal is forced into the dies.
c. The plunger is forced downwards.
d. The dies are closed.
Practice 1
Read the text again to complete the table 6.1:
First, the dies …………….

………… ……………. …………… downwards.
…………… is forced …………
Finally, …………… …………….
Practice 2
Use the first text to complete the second one:
the piston linear movement
the crank rotary movement
Figure 6.2: Steam engine, piston and crank
In a steam engine, the piston is driven backwards and
forwards. This type of movement is called linear
movement. In order to convert the linear movement to
rotary movement, the piston is connected to a crank by a
connecting rod.
Practice 2
Figure 6.3: Car generator and belt
the engine rotary movement
the dynamo or alternator electrical power
In a car, the _______ produces ________ movement. In
order to……………………………………………………
………………………………………………………
Development
Use the words in the boxes to complete A1 – A4 and B1
– B5:
A: The function of components and events
moves downwards moves up
pushes mixes force
B: The stages in the process
is sucked is ignited
is compressed are mixed
is converted are repeated

are pushed is forced
Development
A1. First, the carburetor
_ _ _ _ air and petrol
together in the correct
ratio. Then the piston
_ _ _ _ _ _ and sucks
the mixture into the
cylinder through the
inlet valve.
B1. First, air and petrol _
_ _ _ _ _ _together. Then
the mixture _ _ _ _ _ into
the cylinder. This is
termed the induction
stage.
Development
A2. The piston then
_ _ _ _ _ _ _and
compresses the
mixture.
B2. The mixture
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ . This is
called the compression
stage.
Development
A3. The spark plug ignites
the compressed mixture.
The combustion and rapid
expansion of the ignited

mixture _ _ _ _ _ the
piston down. The
connecting rod _ _ _ _ _
the crankshaft round.
B3. The mixture _ _ _ _ _ _ ;
the piston _ _ _ _ _ _ down.
The downward linear
movement _ _ _ _ _ _ _ into
rotary movement by the
piston and crankshaft
assembly. This is known as
either the ignition or
combustion stage.
Development
A4. Finally, the piston
_ _ __ _ _ again to
push the burnt gases
out through the exhaust
valve.
B4. Finally, the exhaust
gases _ _ _ _ _ _ _out.
Development
B5. The four stages in the 4-stroke
cycle _ _ _ _ _ _ again and again.
