Take your career to the next level
Welcome
Welcome to the University of South Australia, and the beginning of a rewarding and
inspiring journey of discovery.
We are an innovative institution with a strong commitment to excellence. We provide the
widest range of degree programs in South Australia, and have a reputation for excellence
that extends across our four faculty divisions, six research institutes, 17 research centres and
a rapidly-growing number of specialised research groups.
Some of the world’s brightest minds teach and research at the University in the areas of
business, education, arts and social sciences, health sciences, information technology,
materials science, engineering and the environment.
In the 2011 QS World University Rankings, the University of South Australia recorded the
fastest rise of any Australian university for the second consecutive year, and we are now
ranked in the top three per cent of more than 10,000 universities worldwide.
The University is also committed to high-quality research that contributes practical solutions
to real-world challenges. We foster an intellectually rigorous research environment, and
remain at the forefront of collaborative and industry-relevant research in a range of priority
areas, including community sustainability, population health and minerals science.
Recently, the inaugural Excellence in Research for Australia (ERA) assessment – an official
national evaluation of the quality of research – showed that 70 per cent of our assessed
research is at – or above – world-class standard. In addition, the University of South Australia
ranked second in Australia for funding received from the Federal Government under the
Cooperative Research Centres scheme.
The University’s world-class research also informs our teaching and learning, and a large
part of our continuing success is due to the collaborations developed with key partners in
business, industry and the community, which complement the work-focused nature of our
degrees. Consequently, the rate of full-time employment of our graduates is the highest in
South Australia, as is their average starting salary
The University also maximises its international links to remain at the forefront of research

and teaching, and recruits academic staff from across the world who are research leaders
in their fields. The proportion of our academic staff who hold doctoral qualifications is the
highest in South Australia, and well above the Australian university average.
The University of South Australia is making further significant investments to develop some
of the most exciting learning and research environments in Australia, with more than
$1 billion to be invested in additional physical and virtual infrastructure, new initiatives
and improved services across our campuses. This will further enhance our standing as an
education provider of first choice, and ensure that our teaching, learning and research
continue to be recognised as world-class.
I look forward to welcoming you to our campuses in Adelaide – mainland Australia’s most
affordable capital city – and wish you every success in your academic endeavours.

Why study at
the University of
South Australia?
Gain higher degrees that are recognised
throughout the world.
We’re dynamic, vibrant and successful
In the 2011/2012 QS World University Rankings (rated among
the most trusted in the world), the University of South Australia
was ranked 11th in Australia and among the top three per cent
of universities in the world. It was the biggest improvement in
the rankings of any Australian university.
We have great teachers
Almost three-quarters of our academic staff hold PhDs which
means they know what they’re teaching. They’re always winning
awards like Citations for Outstanding Contributions to Student
Learning. Two of them have even won the nation’s highest

honour for university teachers – the Prime Minister’s Award for
University Teacher of the Year.
Our students are pretty smart too
The University of South Australia has more than 1100 PhD
students, including over 400 international students from 62
countries.
Our research is well rewarded
We’ve only been a University for 21 years (we have a long history
as an educational institution that dates back to the mid 1800s)
but despite our relative youth, we are in the top one-third of all
Australian universities for having the highest research income.
We’re spending big on infrastructure
Our campuses are already spacious and well-equipped and
we’re making them even better. We’re spending almost
AUD$1 billion on new teaching and research initiatives and
creating new student services.
We’ll help support you all the way
The University’s Learning and Teaching Unit is a fantastic resource
for help at all stages of your postgraduate studies, from providing
counselling services to helping you with writing assignments,
career planning, time management and even using the
University’s technology.
And Adelaide is an education centre
Besides having just been voted Australia’s most liveable city by
the Property Council of Australia for the second year running,
Adelaide is tolerant, accessible and affordable. It’s a perfect place
to study – big enough to have fun in, and small enough that you
can concentrate on your studies. It’s Australia’s university city.

Gain an internationally
recognised degree
There are many reasons why the University of South
Australia is a quality choice to take your career to the
next step.
The University of South Australia was
ranked 11th in Australia in the 2011 QS
World University Rankings, recording the
biggest improvement of any Australian
university for the second year running. We
are still young, at 21 years old, but our rapid
growth in performance is being recognised
across the globe.
There are many reasons why the University
of South Australia is a quality choice to take
your career to the next step.
Career enhancing programs
Postgraduate qualifications from the
University of South Australia are recognised
and respected throughout the world and
will provide you with the experience,
knowledge and skills you need to further
enhance your career. The University’s

diverse postgraduate educational menu has
more than 200 coursework and research
programs in fields such as physiotherapy,
pharmacy, business, management,
education, psychology, engineering and
information technology, to name just some
of our disciplines.
Award-winning programs
Our Master of Business Administration
(MBA) has again been awarded 5 stars by
the Graduate Management Association of
Australia. It is one of only three MBAs in
Australia to be awarded five stars for four
consecutive years.
Our Business faculty is one of only eight
Australian business schools – and one
of only 120 in the world – to hold the
prestigious European Quality Improvement
System (EQUIS) accreditation.
Expert teaching
Many of our academic staff have worked
and conducted research with industry
and the professions. With these strong
professional links, staff can develop and
share their specialised knowledge and
experience and keep you up-to-date with
what is happening in your field of study.
Almost 70 per cent of our academic staff
hold doctorates, which puts us in the top
10 universities in Australia on this measure.

The quality of our teaching is regularly
recognised by awards such as Citations
for Outstanding Contributions to Student
Learning. And UniSA academics have
twice won the nation’s highest honour for
university teachers, the Prime Minister’s
Award for University Teacher of the Year.
Building for a brand new, world-class
$95 million Learning Centre is underway.
The building, which will engage students
with active learning spaces, world-leading
knowledge and professional practice, will
be the heart of the City West campus.
Financial help
Each year more than 2500 University of
South Australia students benefit from
scholarships and grants worth millions of
dollars (see pages 8 and 9).
And the very best of city living
Adelaide is well regarded for its world-class
education system and lifestyle. The city has
been labelled the most affordable mainland
Australian capital city to study in, according
to the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU).
And, in 2011, Adelaide was revealed as
Australia’s most liveable city by the Property
Council of Australia. See pages 12-15.
State-of-the-art and
sustainable spaces
The University of South Australia is investing

more than $200 million to ensure that
students are provided with the best facilities
and research infrastructure, and that the
University’s campuses are transformed into
some of the most exciting learning and
teaching environments in Australia.
There’s a new $73 million Materials and
Minerals Science Learning and Research
Hub at our Mawson Lakes campus which
accommodates academic staff and research
students working with the Ian Wark Research
Institute and the Mawson Institute.
International students
Our flexible program delivery also
gives you options about where
and when you may wish to study.
The University of South Australia
is one of Australia’s largest and
most reputed providers of offshore
education, allowing you to study
selected programs from your home
country through one of our partner
institutions located around the world.
We also offer a selected range of
programs available for study online
which allows you to complete your
degree from anywhere in the world.

5 stars from the Graduate Management Association
The University of South Australia recently won a five-star rating
for its MBA program for the fourth year running. The 2012 MBA
rankings, released by the Graduate Management Association of
Australia, nominated eight Australian institutions with a five-star
rating but only the University of South Australia, the University of
Queensland and the Melbourne Business School have held the
quality rating long-term.
Number 1 for customer satisfaction
The Australian Financial Review’s Boss magazine rated our MBA
Australia’s most popular.
Number 2 for value for money
The University of South Australia’s MBA beat all the majors for
getting your money’s worth.

A focus on Asia Pacific
makes this a better
program
‘The University of South Australia is
one of the few universities which offer a
Master of International Business program.
I was living in Korea at the time and
contacted the program director, You-il Lee,
for advice. He made me feel comfortable
as the degree is very much focused on the
Asia Pacific region. This made it a better
program than those offered by other
universities.
I’ve noticed that the academics at the
University are heavily involved in
research. They then use real-life examples
based on their research or experience
within the industry in the classroom, so
you can always relate what you’ve learnt
back to those situations. The academics
are also very approachable and really
willing to help all of the students in the
class, especially the international students.
There are also very few American
students here. I like that because it’s
given me the opportunity to learn more
not just about Australian culture, but also
from students from other cultures within
my classes.
I’m from Fresno, California, which has

about half the population of Adelaide,
so I find Adelaide an ideal place to live.
The cheaper cost of living in Adelaide
is also a factor. It’s a quiet and peaceful
city yet is very multicultural and has
a great nightlife. It is actually known
as the ‘Festival City’ because there’s
always some sort of event on here. The
Adelaide beaches are a great place to
relax and they are only 20 minutes away
from the city centre. There is an amazing
sporting culture too – people in Adelaide
are a lot more active than back in the
States and I’ve really enjoyed going to
the Australian football matches here
which have crowds of up to 50,000 people.
Adelaide is also a great place to be based
to see more of Australia. I’ve been Sydney,
Melbourne and Canberra and have also
been to various regions throughout South
Australia such as Hahndorf, Victor Harbor
and the Barossa Valley.
I live at Glenelg beach in a two bedroom
apartment only a minute’s walk from the
beach. I share with my spouse and we pay
$340 per week. We love living in this part
of Adelaide because it is such a relaxed
area with great shopping, restaurants
and entertainment. Glenelg is really
convenient for us because we don’t need to

buy a car. The tram from Glenelg travels
directly to the city and even stops right
out the front of the University of South
Australia campus.
Because of my management experience,
I’ve been able to substitute some of my
International Business electives with
MBA electives. As such, my program
director has allowed me to participate in a
‘Business in China’ study tour in Shanghai
and Beijing. This includes presentations
from guest speakers, visits to local
business and Government and a focus on
the political and cultural aspects of China.
There are also opportunities for me to
go on exchange and to participate in an
industry placement. I really appreciate
all of these because it will give me a
significant advantage over students from
other universities when I graduate and
look for work here in Australia.’

A love of research led to a marketing career
A love of research and the desire to
improve her qualifications led Kate
Newstead (at right) back to the
University of South Australia after

successful undergraduate studies here.
Kate’s Master by Research thesis, Best
Practice Media Scheduling: A real world
application, led to her being awarded the
degree at the end of 2010.
‘I like research’ says Kate, ‘and I wanted
to improve my qualifications. It’s a chance
to really work intensely in an area you’re
passionate about. The University of South
Australia was the default choice for me
– I did all my studies here. Fortunately
it’s one of the best places in the world to
research in the ad/media area because of
the calibre of staff at the Ehrenberg-Bass
Institute and their industry partners.
‘I got a job at the Ehrenberg Bass
Institute while doing my degree and
ended up working on global accounts –
so I had lots of interstate and overseas
travel and lots of networking with top
level marketers and media people.
You have to do a postgraduate degree if
you want to be an executive eventually.
All of the research I did was based
on industry advertising practice –
which involved liaising with agencies,
advertisers, media companies and media
data providers. There was no shortage
of industry collaboration. My research
findings were also sent out to a long list

of marketers and written into corporate
reports for the Ehrenberg-Bass Institute
that are circulated around the world’s top
marketing organisations.
‘I presented my initial results at the
ESOMAR (an international organisation
devoted to market research worldwide)
WM3 conference in Stockholm in
May 2009. I also presented related
research at the Wharton Business
School at University of Pennsylvania
in 2008 at a conference called Empirical
Generalisations in Advertising. I have
also presented to a range of national and
international clients such as General
Mills, Kraft, Meat & Livestock Australia
and M&M Mars.’
Although Kate had a job at the
Ehrenberg-Bass Institute for Marketing
Science while she prepared for her
degree, an APA (Australian Postgraduate
Awards) Scholarship made it possible for
her to stop work in the final six months of
the degree so that she could focus entirely
on her thesis.
‘I think people’s experiences vary
dramatically depending on what school/
research institute they work in,’ says
Kate. ‘For me I can’t rate the Ehrenberg-
Bass Institute highly enough. And I

also can’t explain how amazing the
opportunities I had while working
there and how valuable the networks I
developed have become to me.’

Master of Marketing
Communication skills are keys to success
for accountants
Sulei Gu is a graduate of the Master of
Professional Accounting and Finance
at the University of South Australia.
She is now Manager of Risk and Control
Solutions at PriceWaterhouseCoopers
(PwC) in Adelaide. ‘A lot of people have
the misconception that if you work for a
big four firm like PwC as an accountant,
you work behind a desk,’ she says. ‘It is
actually not true. You spend a lot of time
talking to the clients, serving the clients
and talking to your team, so together you
get the job done.’
As a potential employer, Sulei feels that
communication skills are key. ‘During
the interview, whether you can sit down
and have a good conversation with the
interviewer is really important. Your
written communication skills are too –
whether you can write a concise and
correct report. Attitude is also important:

working in a place like PwC, we are
looking for people who are willing to
learn, willing to take on challenges and
willing to go the extra mile when work
asks for that. We are also looking for
a general level of maturity: someone
with experience – not necessary work
experience – just really any experience
that gives them that level of confidence,
that ability to work within a team and to
deal with complex situations. Recently
I interviewed a group of graduates.
This particular guy worked in a cinema,
which is completely not relevant to
accounting, but working in a cinema can
be challenging sometimes. So I asked
him to give me an example of a challenge
situation. Then he said: Last summer, on
a Saturday night, it had been a 35 degree
day and the air conditioning stopped
working. All the customers in the cinema
were really angry, and I was the shift
manager that day. Being 21 years old, how
do you deal with that situation? I basically
went up and explained the situation to
them, and gave everyone a Choc Top. All
the customers were happy because they
got a free ice-cream. I demonstrated that
we were trying to do something to rectify
the problem.’

‘I was impressed by that,’ Sulei continues.
‘It has nothing to do with accounting,
but it shows that he was a quick thinker,
rose to the challenge, and came up with a
solution. That’s the kind of candidate we
are looking for.’

Knowing that a University of South
Australia degree would be highly
regarded back in Singapore, Sherwin
Liew made the easy decision to study
in Adelaide.

‘It took me a while to adjust and to
learn to manage my time effectively
because I made friends here very
quickly and it was hard to find a
healthy balance between my social
life and my study,’ says. ‘Adelaide is a
relaxed place to live and study, and you
are free to be yourself. The city is very
well set up for students and is very
multicultural so I have made many
friends from all over the world.”
Sherwin enjoys the diversity within
the classroom and appreciates the
encouragement provided by the
academic staff.
‘The relationship between the
students and academics is better at the
University of South Australia than in
Singapore because the communication
is more open and a lot of interaction
is really encouraged. It is a very
welcoming environment. There is a real
mix of ages in my classes, ranging from
early 20s to people in their 50s. Many
of the local postgraduate students work
full-time and study part-time, so they
have a lot of experience and it is great
to learn from them.’
Now operating his own local business,
Sherwin is able to directly draw upon

his university experiences when
negotiating with overseas wholesalers
and manufacturers.
‘The good thing about programs at the
University of South Australia is that
they are a hybrid between Eastern
and Western thinking – this has really
helped me with my business. Also, a
lot of the case studies we completed
have given me the knowledge of how
to act and what to do when I am put in
certain situations.’
