More than 80% of American high school students work at part-time jobs in the
evenings, on weekends or in summer. These part-time jobs bring teenagers great
advantages.
One of the benefits of the work is the students can learn the skills that will be
useful for the rest of their lives. When they work, they have to manage both the job
and schoolwork. To be able to do so, they must be very organized and able to keep
a sensible schedule. They also learn to cope with the job stress apart from the stress
of the schoolwork. Some of the most stressful jobs include teaching, nursing, and
police work. These skills help prepare teenagers for their later careers. High school
students who work are more likely to succeed as adults than people who enter the
job market at a later age with no work experience.
Teenagers want a lot of expensive things: clothes, mp3 players, trips with their
friends, etc. Not all parents can afford them. And even if they can, the teens might
not really appreciate that money because they did not earn it. When teenagers make
money for themselves, they know its true and are less likely to spend it foolishly.

Hoi An, once known as Faifo, with more than 2,000 years history, was the principal
port of the Cham Kingdom. While the serious shipping business has long been
moved to Da Nang, the heart of the city is still the Old Town, full of winding lanes
and Chinese-styled shop-houses. Although almost all shops now cater to the tourist
trade, the architecture has been largely preserved, which is unusual in Vietnam, and
renovation has proceeded slowly and carefully.
However, the culture & heritage that this UNESCO World Heritage Site (WHS)
was trying to preserve has faded away. Since 1999, when UNESCO WHS status
was awarded, there has been a massive increase in tourism - with the result that
most houses have been sold by the community to speculators and shop owners to
be used for commercial purposes. The former community, and with it their culture
and heritage, has gone and in their place are endless indistinguishable shops,
restaurants, art galleries, etc. There are literally hundreds of tailor shops in Hoi An.

Question 31. Hoi An used to be a trading port.
Question 32. Da Nang has replaced Hoi An as a hub for shipping business

ROOTED IN THE PAST
Good manners are a treasure to the people who possess them, as well as to the
community they live in. Manners are taught, learnt, and passed from generation to
14

generation. Even hundreds of years ago, children were taught to behave
responsibly. They learnt to respect seniority. When they passed an object to another
person, they had to use both hands. When they entered a room, they had to bow
and greet the oldest person first. Boys learnt to work hard to support their families.
Girls learnt to do housework, and to take care of others. Loyalty and honesty were
highly appreciated. When they made a mistake, they would not let another person
be punished for it. That would be cowardly and mean. They were taught that
families were strong, and everybody should stick together in adversity. Fortunately,
many of these values have been well preserved. They have contributed to making
the unique Vietnamese culture, and strengthening our society.
