LISTENING ASSIGNMENT 3
THEME 9 - COMMUNICATION
I.

II.

Summary
The listening is about the differences in body language among
cultures. That sometimes can cause trouble in communication. First,
the author defined body language as people’s actions and facial
expressions. Moreover, it had been indicated that the majority of
people use body language in their conversation without realizing it.
The author also talked about some typical examples of body language
differences between America and other countries. One of them is eye
contact. In some places, eye contact represents impolite and bluntness.
However, it is emboldened in America. Communicate without eye
contact can make the conversation confusing and amateurish. In
addition, she presented the meaning of some gestures such as
handshake, thumbs up, and holding hands. Each of the movements will
have different meanings with different people and in different
situations. Finally, she suggested that smiling can be used when
communicating in every culture.
Reflection
The listening provides me with some interesting knowledge about
body language that I haven’t heard before. Now I can confidently
communicate with native speakers without scare of using wrong
gestures. The thing that I find the most surprising is eye contact.
Before listening, I always think that eye contact means showing my
respect to the person whom I’m talking with.
