THESIS INFORMATION

Thesis title: A study on some technical solutions to increase the maize production
effectiveness on sloping-land in Northern Central region

Specialization: Crop Science Code: 9.62.01.10
PhD student: Trinh Duc Toan

Training course: 2015
Scientific supervisors: l. Dr. Lucrng Van Vang; 2. Asoc.Prof. Dr. Ho Quang Duc

Training institution: Vietnam Academy of Agricultural Sciences
1. SUMMARY OF THE CONTENTS OF THE THESIS

1.1. To survey and evaluate the current status

of maize production in Nghe An

and

Thanh Hoa provinces;
1.2. Study on some technical solutions to improve the efficiency of maize production
on sloping-land of Nghe An and Thanh Hoa provinces:
1.3. Building-up a demonstration model which applied the integrated cutivated practies

solutions on sloping-land of Nghe An and Thanh Hoa provinces.
2. NEW RESULTS OF THE THESIS

2.i. Assessing the natural and socio-economic conditions, favorable

and difficulties factors in

maize production in Northern Central region. In the period of 2012-2017, the maize area

of

Northern Central region was relatively stable, averaging 127.8 thousand hectares, accounting
fo.r ll%o

of the whole country's maize area and 62)2% of the whole Central region's maize

area. The average maize yield

in this region is 39.0

quintals,4ra, lower than the national

average yield about 6.65 quintalslha and lower than the average yield

of maize in the Central

region about 4.4 quintalslha. The main reasons for limiting the efficiency of maize production
on the sloping-land in the Northern Central region are lacking of suitable maize varieties and
the lacking of proper farming techniques;

2.2. Three maize varieties have been identified: CS71, P4199 and 30Y87 with good growth
and development, and good tolerance to adverse conditions of the sloping-land of Nghe An
and Thanh Hoa provinces. They have a high yield of over 6.0 tons/ha; in which 2 varieties
CS71 and P4199 have stable yield;

2.3. Some appropriate farming techniques have been identified to improve production

efficiency for the CS71 on sloping-land in Nghe An and Thanh Hoa: The planting season is
January 20 to January 27 every year; Planting density 65 - 7 5 thousand plants/ha, Fertilizer:

180 kg Nitrogen

+ 80 kg Phosphorus + 100 kg Potassium; Application of mechanization in

the following stages: plowing, harrowing, slitting and separating grain kemels; Using
chemical compounds with active ingredients: Acetochlor, Nicosulfuron to control weeds;
Emamectin benzoate to control stem borers; Difenoconazole and Propiconazole to prevent
diseases.

2.4. A model of synchronous application of technical management has been built for maize
production on sloping-land of Nghe An and Thanh Hoa provinces, the achieved yield of over
65 quintals lha, the economic efficiency increased by 22-30% compared to those of control.
