Chapter 1. IBM Director Management Pack for Microsoft
System Center Operations Manager 2007
With the IBM Director Management Pack for Microsoft System Center Operations
Manager 2007, you can use your systems-management software to manage systems
installed with Level-1: IBM Director Core Services or Level-2: IBM Director Agent.
When you install IBM Director Management Pack for Microsoft System Center
Operations Manager 2007, the following functions are enhanced to work with IBM
System x
®
systems:
v Discovery: Provides discovery of Level-1 and Level-2 managed systems.
v Events: Captures events that occur on Level-1 and Level-2 managed systems.
v Alerts: Sends a notification when certain events occur on Level-1 and Level-2
managed systems.
v State: Changes the state of Level-1 and Level-2 managed systems based on event
criteria.
Note: These functions are supported on System x systems running Windows
®

Chapter 2. Integrating IBM Director UIM for Microsoft System
Center Operations Manager
IBM Director provides a management pack that you can integrate into Microsoft
System Center Operations Manager 2007.
Microsoft System Center Operations Manager installation requirements
Consider these requirements before you install the IBM Director Management Pack
for Microsoft System Center Operations Manager 2007.
Server software requirements
You can install IBM Director management pack for Microsoft System Center
Operations Manager 2007 on systems running Microsoft System Center Operations
Manager 2007.
Managed systems software requirements
To use IBM Director management pack for Microsoft System Center Operations
Manager 2007 to manage a system, the system must have the following software
installed:
v A supported Windows operating system
v Level 1: IBM Director Core Services or Level 2: IBM Director Agent
Note: The IBM Director management pack provides only Level-1 management
functionality for the managed system.
For information about installing Level 1: IBM Director Core Services or Level 2:
IBM Director Agent on your managed systems, see IBM Director Planning,

Ensure that you review the list of Windows operating systems on which IBM
Director Agent and IBM Director Core Services are supported. This support varies
by version, release, and update. For the most recent list of supported operating

Installing IBM Director Management Pack for Microsoft System Center
Operations Manager 2007
You can install IBM Director Management Pack for Microsoft System Center
Operations Manager 2007 on a Microsoft System Center Operations Manager 2007
server.
About this task
To install IBM Director Management Pack for Microsoft System Center Operations
Manager 2007, complete the following steps:

1. Go to the IBM Director downloads Web site at www.ibm.com/systems/
management/–director/downloads/director5.htmlwww.ibm.com/systems/
management/director/downloads/director5.html and download the IBM
Director Management Pack for Microsoft System Center Operations Manager
2007 (IBM Hardware Management Pack) installation package and readme for
the appropriate release to a temporary directory:
Version Installation package Readme
5.20 dir5.20_uim_scom.exe dir5.20_uim_scom.txt
2. Double-click the name of installation package to extract the file to the Microsoft
System Center Operations Manager 2007 server.
3. Select to work with the Microsoft System Center Operations Manager 2007
Administrator Console.
4. Expand Management Packs.
5. From the Actions pane, select Properties > Import Management Packs. Note:If
the Actions pane is not visible, click the Actions tab to make it visible.

6. Select IBM_Hardware_SCOM_MP.mp.
7. Complete steps in wizard to import the management pack.

IBM Director management pack enhances the existing functionality of the
Microsoft System Center Operations Manager 2007.
About this task
Administration Pane in Operations Manager 2007
In the Administration pane of the Operations Manager 2007 Operations
Console, IBM Director UIM adds the IBM Management Pack for IBM
Director Agent Managed Systems as one of the included management
packs.
Operations Pane in Operations Manager 2007
In the Operations pane of the Operations Manager 2007 Operations
Console, IBM Director UIM adds an IBM Director Agent Managed Systems
folder that contains the IBM Director Agent Managed Systems View. You
can open the state view and events view by right-clicking the Director
Agent instances of Director Agent Managed Systems View. The state of
Director Agent will be changed according to the events.
Note: The error and warning state will not be changed automatically. You
must reset health manually in the Health Explorer window of
Operations Manager 2007.
Authoring Pane in Operations Manager 2007
In the Authoring pane of the Operations Manager 2007 Operations
Console, IBM Director UIM adds the following items:
Monitoring Pack Objects
These packs access various conditions that can occur in the IBM
monitored objects.
Object Discoveries

These objects display discovered types, type relationships and their
attributes for the IBM management packs.
Rules Pack Objects
These packs allow management and monitoring of Level-1
managed systems.
Views Pack Objects
These packs display the results of the queries sent to the operation
manager database.

Appendix A. Accessibility for IBM Director UIMs and
management packs
Accessibility features help users who have a physical disability, such as restricted
mobility or limited vision, to use information technology products successfully.
IBM strives to provide products with usable access for everyone, regardless of age

IBM Director UIMs and management packs support accessibility features of the
system-management software in which they are integrated. Refer to your
system-management software documentation for specific information about
accessibility features and keyboard navigation.
Tip: The IBM Director topic collection in the IBM Systems information center and
its related publications are accessibility-enabled for the IBM Home Page
Reader. You can operate all features using the keyboard instead of the mouse.
You can view the publications for IBM Director in Adobe Portable Document
Format (PDF) using the Adobe Acrobat Reader. You can access the PDFs through
the IBM Director topic collection in the IBM Systems information center.

Appendix B. IBM Director UIM for SCOM rule groups
The IBM Director Agent Managed Systems allows SCOM 2007 to manage Level-1
and Level-2 managed systems.
These rules are assigned to all systems found in the IBM Director Agent Managed
Systems view. All the IBM Director Agent instances are discovered by script. The
IBM Director Agent contains the Availability, Communications, Device,
Environmental, Heartbeat, Security and Other state monitors.
IBM Director Core Services
These unit monitors process events from Level 1: IBM Director Core Services and
generate alerts when warranted. These monitors also set the state of the IBM
Director Agent state monitors.
Device:
v The system has been disconnected from the network.
v The system lease has expired.
v A power supply has failed.
v A system NIC is now online.
v The Remote Supervisor Adapter has detected that a system component is about
to fail.
v A system POST event has been detected.
v The Remote Supervisor Adapter has detected that a disk drive has failed.
v An Advanced Systems Management processor has detected that a system power
supply has failed.
v The system warranty has expired.
v A user has logged into the Remote Supervisor Adapter web interface.
v A processor threshold event has been detected.
v An AssetID event has been detected.
v A disk SMART event has been detected.
v A storage threshold event has been detected.

v The Remote Supervisor Adapter has detected that its error log is almost full or
full.
v A RAID Health status event has been detected.
v A BIOS configuration change event has been detected.
Environmental:
v A service processor has detected a fan threshold event.
v A temperature sensor threshold event has been detected.
v A fan sensor threshold event has been detected.
v A generic event has occurred.
v A voltage sensor threshold has been detected.
v The system chassis is open.
v A service processor has detected a voltage threshold event.
Security:
v A service processor has detected that its error log is almost full or full.
v A processor event has been detected
v A physical memory event has been detected.
Heartbeat:

v IBM Director Core Services Hardware Monitoring Status.
Communications:
v A change in the state of NIC redundancy has been detected.
v A system NIC has failed.
v The primary NIC has failed. The standby NIC has become active.
v A system NIC is now offline.
v The primary NIC is functional and is teamed.
Other:
v An unclassified event has occurred.
The “Event Collection for IBM Director Agent” rule processes all WMI indications
produced by Level-1 and Level-2 managed systems. The rule must remain enabled
in order to get the entire event from IBM Director Agent . The “IBM Director

Agent Discovery” objects runs on all the Windows systems under the management
group. It adds the IBM Director Agent and ServeRAID Agent component to each
system according to the discovery result.
LSI Logic Storage Controllers
These unit monitors process events from LSI Logic controllers running IBM
Director Agent 5.20 or later and generate alerts when warranted. These monitors
also set the state of the IBM Director Agent state monitors.
Availability:
v A RAID event of Warning severity from LSI has been detected.
v A RAID event of Critical severity from LSI has been detected.
The “Event Collection for LSI Logic controllers running IBM Director 5.20 or later
Agent” rule processes all WMI indications from LSI Logic controllers produced by
managed systems. The rule must remain enabled in order to get the entire LSI
event from Director Agent 5.20 or later.
ServeRAID Manager Agent
These rules are assigned to all systems found in the “IBM Director Core Services
5.20.x” computer groups. Systems are assigned to one of these computer groups
based on the Computer Attribute “IBM Director ServeRAID Level 1 Agent.”
Systems in this group are assigned the IBM Director Agent role by the discovery
script.
These unit monitors process events from IBM ServeRAID Level 1 Agent and
generate alerts when warranted. These monitors also set the state of both the IBM
Director Agent and ServeRAID agent state monitors.
v A RAID event of Warning severity from ServeRAID Agent has been detected.
v A RAID event of Critical severity from ServeRAID Agent has been detected.
The “Event Collection for IBM ServeRAID Agent” rule processes all WMI
indications from Director ServeRAID Agent managed systems. The rule must
remain enabled in order to get the ServeRAID event from Director ServeRAID
Agent.

Appendix C. CIM indications in IBM Director
CIM indications are the fundamental means that IBM Director receives hardware
and system information. Depending on how your system-management
environment is implemented, IBM Director converts the CIM indications into
events or other appropriate vehicles for communicating information to end
consumers.
IBM Director converts CIM indications for use by Microsoft System Center
Operations Manager 2007 events.
