We had a terrible time a month ago. Thousands of insects
came and ate many of the crops in the fields. The farmer is very
worried because he thinks the insects will come again and destroy
all the crops. He became so worried that he sold the farm last week,
and that is why I have to leave here.
Soon I will have to look for another job. Do you think you could
help me find one? I like working on farmers, so if you know anyone
who needs a hard worker, please recommend me to them. I know
that you are very busy at the moment and that you don’t have
much free time. But I really hope you can find time to help me. I
don’t know what else to do.
If I can’t find a job, I’ll have to go back home and stay with my
parents I know they would be very upset if I did that. They are old
and they don’t have much money. They couldn’t support me as well
as themselves.
I hope to hear from you soon.

David.

Exercise 7:
I. Read the passage carefully and answer these questions

Louis Braille was born in France in 1809. His father had a
small business. He made shoes and other things from the
leather. Louis liked to help his father in the store even when
he was very small. One day when Louis was 3 years old, he
was cutting some leather. Suddenly the knife slipped and hit
him in the eyes. He soon became completely blind.
When he was ten years old, he entered the National
Institute for the blind in Paris. One day his class went to visit
a special exhibit by a captain in the army. One thing in the
exhibit was very interesting for Louis. It showed message in
code. Armies send messages in secret codes so no one else
can read them. The captain wrote this code raised letters on
very thick paper.
Louis thought a lot about this code. Then he decided to
write in the same way so the blind could “read” with their
fingers. It is very difficult to feel the differences between
raised letters. Instead of letters, Louis used a “cell” of six

dots. He arranged the dots with two dots cross and three
down. So blind people can read and write even music by
Braille.

When we were in England last year, I went fishing with my
friend, Peter. Early in the morning we were sitting quietly by
the side if the lake when we had an unpleasant surprise; we
saw a duck come along three ducklings paddling cheerfully
behind her. As we watched them, there was a sudden swirl in
the water. We caught a glimpse of the vicious jaws of a pike

–a fish which is rather like a fresh which is rather like a fresh
water shark –and one of the ducklings was dragged bellow
the surface. The incident made Peter furious. He vowed to
catch the pike. On three successive mornings we returned to
the vicinity and used different kinds of bait. On the third day
Peter was lucky. Using an artificial frog as bait he manage to
hook the monster. There was a desperate fight but Peter was
determined to capture the pike and he succeeded. When he

trip , so we’ll be back at 4: 30p.m. We are going to visit three
places. The first one is the castle. This was built 6 hundred
years ago and it is very interesting. After that we’ll stop at a
café’ for lunch at one o’clock. We’ll stay there about threequarters of an hour. We’ll then drive on to our third stop. It
will be at a beach and if you like, you can swim there or just
sit in the sun and look at the scenery. The lake is very
beautiful and there are lots of birds there. So remember to

The future tense

1. Present continuous + time word
S + am/ is / are – V-ing
Form: Present continuous + time word (tomorrow, next Saturday, in two weeks
....)
on Sunday/ this Sunday
in three days/ in two week’s time
I’m seeing them
this week/ this Friday
next week/ next Thursday
Use: To talk about plans which are arranged for a particular time in the future.
This construction is used very often with come and go, and verbs like: see,
stay, visit, meet, arrive, leave,
- They are going tomorrow
- I’m arriving next week.
- We are visiting the Browns in three days.
Notes:
 Remember that a time word/ expression must be used or understood
from the conversation to make the present continuous a future.
 This is not just a “near future” – it is possible to say:
He is coming back in ten years.
2. Be going to
Form:
S + am/ is/ are – going to infinitive
Use:
 To talk about a planned future action.
I’m going to see my parents on Saturday.
 To talk about something in the future which we can see as a result of
something happening now:
Look at those clouds. It is going to rain.
That man on the bike is going to fall off!

 To make statements about the future in a neutral way (k0 rõ rệt)
Alan is going to finish his exams on Friday.
Jenny is going to be fine next week.
I’m going to work for a television company.
3. Going to/ Present Continuous + time word – Contrast (tương phản)
 It is often possible to use either tense:
 The going to future is very common, especially in conversation. If there
is doubt about which of the two futures to use, it is better to use going
to.
 With the verbs go, leave, arrive and come, it is better to use the
Present continuous.
