Langmuir-Blodgett
Thin organic films only a few nanometers thick are at
the focus of many different fields of advancing research
for new materials for nanotechnology. These LangmuirBlodgett films are the source of high expectations as
being useful components in many promising applications
including sensors, detectors, displays and electronic
circuit components. The possibility to synthesize organic
molecules with a desired structure and functionality in
conjunction with the Langmuir-Blodgett deposition
technique enables the production of electrically,
optically and biologically active components on a
nanometer scale.
KSV Instruments manufactures instruments based on the
Langmuir-Blodgett deposition technique. The KSV
product line includes different types of troughs ranging
from the small and portable KSV Minitrough to a fully
automatic and PC controlled system for the fabrication
of alternating layer LB-Films. In addition many various
custom troughs have been made to customers own
designs. These include, conductivity troughs, enzyme
kinetics troughs, microscopy troughs, two phase troughs,
dipping contact angle measuring systems, and large
substrate depositions just to name a few.


Since the early 1980's KSV Instruments has been at the
forefront of LB-technology by providing scientists LBinstruments with unprecedented performance and
versatility.

Troughs

A pure one piece solid PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene) is used in
all KSV’s troughs mainly because it is inert and highly hydrophobic

LB-films on solid substrates and for analysis of monolayers. Mainframe construction with motorised

height elevators for accurate positioning of the film balance and dipping mechanism onto a
water/air interface.
• Symmetric compression of the monolayer by two leak proof hydrophilic barriers.
• Solid PTFE trough with no glue sealing of the dipping well. Effective surface area, 530 x 150 mm2
with a dipping well in the centre.
• Dipper, a device for LB-film depositions on solid substrates.
• Max. size of substrate 100x100 mm.
• Subphase temperature control facility, see accessories.

• PC controlled instrument for of unsupervised deposition of alternating Langmuir-Blodgett films,
deposition of monolayers and Langmuir-film experiments.
• Mainframe construction with motorized height elevators for accurate positioning of the film
balance and dipping mechanism onto a water/air interface.
• Total film area 1740 cm2 in two separate compartments (A/B) each 870 cm2 with a dipping
well in the center. Clean surface phase in the middle.
• Symmetric compression of the monolayer by leak proof hydrophilic barriers. Dipping well in the
center of the trough. Solid PTFE trough with no glue sealing.
• Dipper, a device for deposition of multiple alternating LB-layers on solid substrates.
• Max. size of substrate 100 x 100 mm. (optional sizes available – 45 x 45 mm)
• Subphase temperature control facility, see accessories.
