Bài 1: How to repair a puncture
Bicycle, the common man's vehicle, gets easily punctured when it is used on rough
roads. It is not uncommon even on the fine roads. The villain of the piece may be a nail,
a thorn or very often a discarded bullock's shoe. After all, the bicycle is able to give a
smooth ride because of the inflated tyres/tires. If a hole happens to occur in the tube the
air inside escapes, the tire becomes flat and so the bicycle cannot run.
It is not enough, if one owns a bicycle. Sometimes, he must be able to attend to its
working and keep it in a good repair. One of the things lie may often be called upon to
attend is the puncture. Of course it can be attended to by a professional repairer but
one should know how to do it oneself
For repairing the puncture, the following accessories are needed: an air pump, two or
three tire levers, rubber solution, rubber patches, a tube of water and a scraper or a
sand paper. Now the punctured tube will have to be taken out of the tire. The check nut
and the valve tube are taken out. The tube itself is taken carefully out of the tire with the
help of tire levers. Then the valve tube and the check nut are replaced and the tube is
inflated with air. The tube is immersed in water and by trial and error the punctured spot
is detected. Round the spot a pencil mark is made. Then the air is let out. The
punctured spot is dried, scraped and rubbed with a scraper. A suitable size of the
rubber patch is taken, the side to be stuck is scraped and solution applied. The patch is
applied to the tube over the punctured hole and pressed well. When it is dry the tube is
dried and carefully placed within the tire.
It is easier to write than to place the tube correctly within the tire. This comes out of
practice. Once the tube is in, the valve tube and the check nuts are replaced and the
tube inflated. But it must not be fully inflated first; inflate a little and see if there is any
twist in the tube. If so, the process of taking out and replacing must be repeated. Then
of course, the tube can be inflated. So, it is better for those who own their bicycles to
know to repair a puncture. They should carry their tools kit. Then they can attend to the
puncture even in all out-of-the-way place.
Bài 2 How to Cope with Stress
You have three mid-term examinations next week and a paper due in sociology. To
make matters worse, you are scheduled to work an extra six hours at your part-time job,
and your car is beginning to make some strange noises . The only bright spot is the big
football game this weekend. If you have weeks like this one, you are probably feeling
the effects of stress, effects that leave you feeling frazzled and can lead to serious
medical problems. Fortunately, stress can be reduced with the help of a simple threestep plan.
The first step to coping with stress is exploring your situation and changing your
attitude. What is causing your stress? Like many people, you may have taken on so
many activities that you feel overwhelmed. To deal with this problem, make a list of
everything that is contributing to your stress. Then rank each item according to how
serious the consequences would be if you did not do it. For example, you need to do
well on your mid-terms, and you need a car to get to school and to work. So as much
fun as the football game would be, you should spend the weekend studying and getting
your car repaired. If you have trouble ranking the items, show your list to someone who
has the objectivity to see a good solution. As you accomplish the things on your list,
cross them off. This technique will help you to manage your time more efficiently and
will give you a sense that you are in control of your life.
The second step to reducing stress is to begin a program of regular physical
exercise. When people are under a great deal of stress, their bodies produce extra
adrenalin, which quickens the heartbeat, increases the sugar level in the blood, and
slows up or stops digestion. These bodily changes, in turn, cause people to sweat, to
have upset stomachs, to feel jittery, and to lose sleep. However, if you exercise
vigorously for 20 to 30 minutes a day-run or swim, for example-you will use up the extra
energy produced by the high sugar level, and the physical symptoms of stress will
probably disappear. Exercise on a planned schedule so that it becomes a habit, and do
not exercise too near bedtime so that it does not interfere with sleep. Exercise will calm
you and give you a feeling of well-being that will allow you to deal more effectively with
your hectic lifestyle.
To reduce stress still further, do mental exercises every day. In a quiet room, sit up
straight in a comfortable chair with your feet resting on the floor. Close your eyes and
listen to your breathing. Slowly inhale through your nose, hold the breath for several
seconds, and then exhale slowly through your mouth. Doing this exercise at least four
times should help to relax you. Then with your eyes still closed, visualize a beautiful
tropical beach. There you are, floating in the clear blue water. As the gentle current
carries you along, you look up at the puffy white clouds crossing the sky. You hear the
gentle breeze rustling through the palm trees. You feel calm and peaceful. If you do this
mental exercise twice a day for 20 minutes each time, your mind and body will become
more relaxed.
Thus, you do not have to be the victim of stress if you follow this three-step plan.
First, examine your situation and be realistic about what you can accomplish in the time
you have. Then each day find some time in your busy schedule to exercise and take a
mental vacation. Consider it the vacation you really need but do not have the time to
take. These three steps can help you to maintain your health, to become more
productive at work or school, and to enjoy life to the fullest.
Bài 3
City Streets
Every city has its share of maintenance problems and our city is no different. Our
parks are not maintained well, our sewers back up when it rains, and the tree roots are
tearing up many of the sidewalks. These are annoying problems, but the worst problem
of all is our city streets. Our streets are in terrible condition.
If you have ever driven in the uptown area, for instance, you have seen the decayed
condition of our streets there. You have had to dodge potholes on nearly every
residential street in this area. On Chestnut Street, for example, there are at least ten
potholes in a two-block area. And on nearby Oak Street, the pavement is so worn that
what remains is a combination of sand and gravel that turns to mud when it rains.
The residential streets are in bad enough shape, but the streets along the wharf are
in even worse shape. Potholes, nails and debris make driving in that area hazardous.
Last week, one of my friends got a flat tire while driving down River Road. The
repairman found two rusty nails in the tire. Over on Bridge Street there has been a pile
of rubbish near the intersection for at least three weeks.
It is bad enough that the residential and wharf areas of town have streets that are in
such terrible condition, but it is even worse when the streets in the downtown area are
in horrible shape. Main Street is especially bad. A driver has to avoid aluminum beer
cans and broken beer bottles whenever he tries to park. Hall Street is not much better.
Like the uptown streets, it has several potholes, one of which is directly in front of City
Hall! It also has some large cracks that need to be filled.
In summary, whether you are driving uptown, near the wharf, or downtown, you are
going to find streets that are in terrible condition. What is inexcusable is that the City
Council has failed to do anything about the problem. It is clear that some improvements
must be made – now!
1. Viết đoạn văn về ngày Tết bằng tiếng Anh có dịch
Lunar New Year Festival often falls between late January and early February; it is
among the most important holidays in Vietnam. Officially, the festival includes the 1st,
2nd, and 3rd day in Lunar Calendar; however, Vietnamese people often spend nearly a
month celebrating this special event. Tet Holiday gets its beginning marked with the first
day in the Lunar Year; however, its preparation starts long before that. The 23rd day of
the last Lunar month is East Day—a ritual worshiping Kitchen Gods (Tao Cong). It
thought that each year on this day, these Gods go to heaven to tell Jade Emperor about
all activities of households on earth. On New Year’s Eve, they return home to continue
their duties as taking care of families. On New Year’s Day, the first ones who come to
visit households—called first-foot—are very important and hence need to be well
chosen, as they believed to hold in their hands the entire luck of the family in New Year
(Tan Nien). After that, till the third day or even the fourth day of Tet, individuals meet
relatives, friends, and colleagues, wishing them all kinds of good things like happiness,
health, and success.

2. Write about your hobby
Most of my friends like to stay inside to play video games, read books or watch TV, but I
have a good hobby of going outside and playing sports. I play many different sports in
my free time; some of them are soccer, swimming, volleyball and basketball.
Sometimes I also ride the bikes or do board skating with my cousin in the park. In my
opinion, doing sport is one of the rare hobbies that actually have good impacts on me. I
am taller than most of my classmates thanks to swimming and basketball lessons that I
take during summer time. My muscles are even stronger than my older brother, and I
can last longer than most other people in any sport competition. Sports bring me a lot of
benefits, and they are also fun things to do at the same time. I love the feeling of the
cool water run through my face when I am swimming, and it seems like I am flying
whenever I take a dive underwater. When I play soccer, it is very exciting for me or my
teammates to score a goal even though we do not take part in any tournament. Both of
my physical and mental health become better after I play sports, so it can be considered
as the best things to do in my free time. Sports are like a part of my life besides other
activities, and I will continue to play sports till I am too weak for them.

that education is very important because that is what determines our future.

4. Write about your favorite subject at school
When going to school, there are many subjects; however I still like literature the most.
First, literature plays an important role in both education and daily life. Literature is not
limit to a subject to be learnt at school. Furthermore, this subject teaches human about
several aspects of life. From the very first step, student learns to write, read as well as
describe things and people. Moreover, literature teaches one to be a responsible citizen
and likeable personality. Literature is more than a subject, it’s an art and it can be
applied directly into life such as: journalism, editor. People are not born to learn this
unique subject, it needs long time to exercise to master. Besides, when learning
literature people not only know more works of art but also understand culture, tradition
of each country. Literature is the mirror reflecting human and their lifestyle. Studying
literature means learning the way to love and live a true life. All in all, with great benefits
of literature, it is necessary for each society especially developing countries.

5. Write about your favorite sport
I love a quite strange sport for everyone, and it is ping pong. Not many people in
Vietnam who are interested in ping pong, and it is also hard to find a place to actually
have enough equipment to play it. Ping pong, or it also known as table tennis, consists
of two or four players hitting a lightweight ball back and forth on a table. The table is
divided in two halves by a net, and it marks the playing zone of each team. The basic
rule for amateurs is pretty simple as players need to let the ball touch their side of the
table one time before bouncing back. They then hit the ball back to their opponent’s side
with a small paddle, and this time the ball also need to touch the other side of the table
as well. A point is counted when a player fail to return back the ball, let it touch the net,
or make it land outside of the table. Since it is played on a table, so the area is not big
enough for us to wait and think about the next move. Therefore, we need to play it with
fast reactions and nonstop motions. We only have one second to act the next step right
after hitting the ball, and it does not take much time to complete a set. In a competition,
and match usually consists of five or seven sets, and the first one to score 11 points
wins a set. Many people do not take this sport serious, but I think it is a very good sport
to train both of our physical and mental health as we need to be tough and have quick
reactions at the same time.

My mother is a person I admire most. She devoted a lot of time and energy to the

Moreover, she is a good role model for me to follow. She always tries to get on well with
people who live next door and help everyone when they are in difficulties, so most of
them respect and love her. I admire and look up to my mother because she not only
brings me up well but also stands by me and gives some help if necessary. For
example, when I encounter some difficulties, she will give me some precious advice to
help me solve those problems. She has a major influence on me and I hope that I will

7. Write about the subject you hate most at school
Back in high school, the subject that I really hated was literature. I did not understand
why others could write easily but I could not. Honestly, I really admired my friends
because they always wrote long essays, and theirs all were full of feelings. When I look
back now, I can figure out some reasons. First of all, I belonged to natural science. That
was why I always got five scores for literature but maximum ones for math. The second
reason was also the most critical factor that impacted negatively on my writing skill. I
remember that I had to write unreal things in my essays. For instance, my teachers
were not perfect but I had to describe them as angels. How could I write well when the
lies always stopped my ideas? In my opinion, this was the worst teaching way because
the teachers were killing students' self-expression and teaching their students how to
tell lies. Fortunately, I was not good at writing, but I have never failed the exams
because I always beat my brains out to finish my essays.

The book that I love most is “Hachiko - the waiting dog”. The book tells the story of the

Hachiko lives with the professor’s family in Tokyo. Everyday, in the morning, Hachiko
followed professor Eisaburo to the gas station when he commuted to work. And every
afternoon, at 5 pm, no matter how sunny or rainy it was, the dog came to the gas station
to wait for the professor comming back home. The way from home to the station and
from the station to home was Hachiko’s the happiest time. Professor Eisaburo always
confessed with Hachiko, talked and played with him. They had been together for a long
time before a tragedy came up. As every day, Hachiko was waited for the professor
coming back. But the professor had passed away because of a stroke when he was
presenting on the stage. Not being discouraged, Hachiko still waited for the professor
the following days regardless of any kind of weather. Once the professor’s wife sent him
to the countryside far away from Tokyo, but Hachiko tried to escape and backed in the
station to continue waiting until he died. This was a touching story and made me cry
many times. I kept the book carefully and read again when I meet difficulties on school.
The book helps me release stress and depression. Thanks to the book, I can learn a
precious lesson.

22. Write about the traffic in Vietnam
Traffic is one of the most important problems in Vietnam. During many decades, traffic
here is always difficult. This essay will present these problems and some solutions
about the traffic of Vietnam.
First of all, there are many vehicles in the road at a time. One can be stuck in the traffic
for hours during rush hours, specially in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. Moreover, there
are many signs in the road which make people feel confused. Vietnam’s traffic problems
are very complicated.
Secondly, the sense of participation in Vietnam’s traffic is very indigent. Some people
often go too fast and sloppy, cross the red light or carrying bulky. Most people always
ride these motobikes on the sidewalk than waiting a bit.
In conclusion, traffic in Vietnam is still a difficult problem. I hope the traffic in Vietnam
will be improved and become better and better in the future.

34. Describe your favorite food
One of the most underrated dish in Vietnam is Mi Quang. Mi quang actually originates
from Da Nang. Easily distinguished by its yellow-coloured rice noodles, this dish is a
hearty mix of bone broth seasoned with fish sauce, black pepper, shallot, and garlic, as
well as meaty ingredients such as river shrimp, boiled quails eggs, and roast pork. Mi
quang also comes with a variety of herbs, including basil, peanuts, coriander, lettuce,
sliced banana flowers, and sesame rice crackers. There is no correct way to cook Mi
Quang – it really depends on your tastes and preferences. Mi Quang brings out the
feeling of genuineness and simplicity just like the people in Central Vietnam, one that is
hard to come across in the modern dishes.

35. Describe your favorite drink
As many teenagers these days, I’m a big fan of bubble milk tea. This beverage is quite
easily made, just by mixturing milk and tea together. However, bubble tea shops often
have special recipes and professional machines so their bubble tea is much more
delicious, to me. Beside of bubble, there are different kinds of toppings such as: jelly,
red beans, or cream cheese,… I often drink bubble tea two or three times per week. It’s
easy to order it online with delivery apps. In addition, there are a lot of discounts with
this kind of beverage which motivate me to drink more. Although bubble tea is sweet
and really tasty, there are some drawbacks if you drink it too much. Therefore, I’m trying
to have it only once a week.

Essay 48: Express your opinion on the importance of studying geography
Geography is a fascinating subject. It reveals all the wonderful changes and activities
that have been going on in the world since the beginning of time.
By reading geography we learn not only about our own country but also about countries
beyond the seas. We also learn about the mountains, oceans, islands, lakes,
volcanoes, the winds and a number of other very interesting things about the world and
the ụniverse.
Among the important things that we learn in Geography are the infinite varieties of
creatures. plants, birds and land features that exist in the world. We know that there are
millions of creatures: small and large, of various kinds in all parts of the earth. We also
know that many of the early creatures have now become extinct, while many of them
have changed from their original forms. Reading about all these is indeed very
interesting.
We also learn about the various types of plants and birds that exist throughout the
world. The plants and birds in the cold lands are not the same as those in warmer lands.
In the same way, the land forms in the cold regions are different from those in other
regions. In the equatorial regions, for example, plant and animal life is luxuriant while in
the poles the land is covered with snow, and animal and plant life is less abundant. In
equatorial regions abundant rain has produced large rivers and lakes, while in areas
where little rain falls there are large deserts without many rivers and lakes.
As the climate and vegetation of one place are not the same as those of another, the
habits and activities of the people of different regions are also different. Even their
religious convictions and languages are different from those of other parts of the world.
Thus, Geography is a very important subject, and because of its width and variety it is
one of the most interesting subjects to read.

Essay 49: The importance of rivers
Rivers have been very useful to men in all parts of the earth since very early times.
They provide water to slake the thirst of men, to fertilize their lands and to provide a
means of communication for the goods that they transport from place to place.
Early civilization began on the banks of the great rivers of the world, such as the Nile
and the Indus. These rivers provided the water, the people on their banks needed for all
their purposes. As people in those early days did not have the transport facilities that we
have today . They had to live close to the rivers to transport their goods to places along
the rivers and to draw the water that they needed.
Rivers not only provided water for their domestic needs and agricultural purposes but
also enabled the people to move from place to place along their banks. Boats or rafts
were used to travel from one end of a river to another. In the same way, goods were
also transported. With the transport of good and the contacts of people between
different parts of the same river there were also many cultural exchanges. Thus, rivers
helped to spread civilization.
It is true, however, that rivers have also caused much misery and unhappiness to
millions of people throughout history. They have caused floods and destroyed lives and
property in all parts of the earth. For example, the Hwang Ho in China has been
described as the “sorrow of China” because of the destruction that it had caused in the
past.
But it should be realised that floods occur once in several years. Therefore, the damage
that rivers cause is not so great as the benefits that they confer on humanity.
Today, rivers continue to be used not only as a source of water for drinking and fertilizing
the lands or as a means of transport but also as a source of electricity which has
revolutionized society. The importance of rivers is therefore not difficult to appreciate.

Essay 50: The value of books
Deep in the heart of every good book lies the distilled wisdom of centuries. To read it is
to become wiser.
Books are written for the benefit and pleasure of all those who like to read them. But
they are of various types. There are books for children, as well as for adults. Some
books are written for the specialists, some are written for students in the schools and
universities, and many are written just for the pleasures of the mind. Indeed, the variety
of books is infinite.
One of the reasons for the existence of such a wide variety of books is that the field of
knowledge is very extensive. Even to grasp a small part of it one has to read several
books for many years. Another reason is that different people have different likes and
dislikes. The book that one likes to read, the other may not like. To meet these broad
and varying needs of people for information, knowledge, recreation and aesthetic
enjoyment, more and more books are being written every year.
Those who aim to specialize in a certain branch of knowledge concentrate more on the
books that provide information on their particular field of study. In the libraries and book
shops they look mainly for such books. But those who have no particular interest in any
subject read and buy all types of books. Sometimes they buy books intended for the
specialist, sometimes they buy those written for children. and sometimes if they are
preparing for some examination, they buy books which give some information on their
examination subjects.
Almost every book extends the knowledge of the reader and develops his intellect as
well. Even if the reader does not learn any new facts from the book, he may at least
learn a few new words, expressions or ideas. In fact, certain books are written mainly to
acquaint the reader with the beauty of language and ideas. They do not deal with facts
or actual human experiences. Books of this type provide great pleasure to the mind, and
almost everyone who loves reading buys a few of such books. Books have also helped
to promote better understanding among the peoples of the world. By reading books.
The people of one country have come to know about the achievements of those in other
countries.
Thus, books could be regarded as one of the channels of communication among men.
Indeed, without books man would not have made so much progress as he has made
today. By applying the knowledge that he has gained from books to practical purposes,
