V. Read the passage, and decide whether the following statements are true (T) or false (F).
Dear Sarah,
I hope you do not mind me writing to you. You probably do not remember me, but we met about
three years ago. My sister Vtasta used to work as an au pair for the family next door to you and I
visited her for a week. We both went to a barbecue at your house. Your dad set fire to a tree in the
back garden and had to call the fire brigade.
I'm sure you remember that.
Anyway, I am writing to you now because Vtasta remembers that your parents are both lawyers.
I'm studying Law at university here in the Czech Republic. It's a five-year course, and I'm to
finish my second year. I've decided to spend next year working in the UK, partly to improve my

English and partly to earn some money. Could your mum or dad give me any advice about how to
get a job in a law firm? I'm prepared to do any kind of work.
I'm enclosing a recent photo of me, Vtasta and two friends of ours. Vlasta is the girl with long,
blond hair. I'm the one on the left, with short, dark hair and a long-sleeved T-shirt.
Best wishes,
Marek Zeman

VI. Read the passage and choose the correct answer. (1.0 point)
In the United States, people celebrate Mother's Day and Father's Day. Mother's
Day is celebrated on the second Sunday in May. On this occasion, mother usually receives
greeting cards and gifts from her husband and children. The best gift of all for an American Mom
is a day of leisure. The majority of American mothers have outside jobs as well as housework, so
their working days are often very hard. The working mother enjoys the traditional Mother's Day
custom of breakfast (or brunch) cooked by her family and served to her on a tray in bed. Later in
the day, it is also traditional for the extended family group to get together for dinner, either in a
restaurant or in one of their homes. Flowers are an important part of Mother's Day. Mothers are
often given a corsage or plant for the occasion, particularly if they are elderly.
