Grammar:

1. Tenses (simple present, present progressive, simple future, be
going to, past simple, present perfect, past progressive,…)

I am going to talk to her about that tomorrow.
The students are speaking English at the moment.
He will go to Hue tomorrow.
They correspond once every two weeks.
She has just won the first prize.
Yesterday, she was cooking when the phone rang.
Put the verbs in brackets into the correct tenses

2. Wish

S + wish(es) + S + V2/ed………..(be - were)

3. Passive forms.

- Present simple: am, is , are + V3/ed
Ex: Farmers grow rice.
 Rice is grown by farmers.

- Future simple: will be + V3/ed
Ex: I will meet him later.
 He will be met later.
Exercise: Change into passive voice
1. They will build a new bridge next year.

2. Will you buy the brown shorts?

3. We won't invite them to our party.

4. Mr. White will see you tomorrow.

5. I am going to repair the broken chair.

- Simple past: was / were + V3/ed
Ex: Tom wrote this report yesterday.
 This report was written by Tom yesterday.
Exercise: Change into passive voice
1. They make a cake last night.

2. We couldn't remember his name.


3. What did Ba see on the mountain?

4. Did you study English yesterday?

5. She asked me a lot of questions.

- Present perfect: have / has + been + V3/ed
Ex: I have known her for three years.
 She has been known for three years.
Exercise: Change into passive voice
1. I have already sent the postcard.

3. Have Liz and Alice ever eaten Vietnamese food yet?

4. They haven't seen him since last week.

5. The plumber has checked the pipes.

- Present progressive: am / is / are + being + V3/ed
Ex: Nam is helping Nga with the homework.
 Nga is being helped with the homework by Nam.
Exercise: Change into passive voice

1. They are reading a book at the moment.

2. The children are drawing a picture now.

3. Is Tom playing the pinao in his room now?

4. My grandma isn't watching the weather forecast at present.

4. Reported Speech:

- Commands: S + asked / told + O + (not) to infinitive
"Read loudly, please" the teacher said to me.
The teacher asked / told me to read loudly.
He said to her, " Don't touch that".
He asked / told her not to touch that.
- Requests: S + asked / told + O + (not) to infinitive
"Can you help me with the homework?" Nam said to Lan.
 Nam asked / told Lan to help him with the homework.
- Advice:
The teacher said to Tim " you should study harder."
 The teacher said Tim should study harder.
Or The teacher told Tim that he should study harder.
Or The teacher advised Tim to study harder.

6. Gerund (Ving)

- After prepositions (in, on, at, about,……………)
- After some expressions: can't stand= can't bear (không thể chịu đựng), can't help,
it's no use/ good,…..
- After some veerbs: avoid, hate, dislike, enjoy, finish, keep, love, like, mind,
suggest, stop,……….
Ex: I can't help feeling anxious about her study.

7. Adjectives and Adverbs

- Adjectives - before nouns Ex: He is a kind man.
- after to be, linking verbs EX: You look beautiful today.
- Adverbs - after verbs
Ex: They speak English fluently.
- before adjectives Ex: Our oceans are extremely polluted now.
Exercise: Use Adjectives or Adverbs to complete these sentences.

8. Adverb clauses of reason: as, because, since

9. Adjective + that clause

10. Conditional sentences: type 1 and type 2

- Type 1: If + present tense, will + verb
Ex: If the rice paddies are polluted, the rice plants will die.
- Type 2: If + past tense, would / could / might + verb (be - were)
Ex: What would you do if you saw a UFO?
Exercise: Complete these sentences.

12. Adverb clauses of concession (although, though, even though)

Notes:
There are two types of relative clauses: defining and non-defining (with
commas)

That is not used in non-defining relative clauses.

- This is the book which I bought in Ho Chi Minh city.
