This revision of BS AU 1 has been prepared under the direction of the Automobile
Standards Committee and is identical with ISO 337: 1 981 “Road vehicles — 50
semi- trailer fifth wheel coupling pin — Basic and mounting/interchangeability
dimensions ” published by the International Organization for Standardization

(ISO). This revision supersedes BS AU 1 b: 1 977 which is withdrawn.
Terminology and conventions. The text of the International Standard has

been approved as suitable for publication as a British Standard without
deviation. Some terminology and certain conventions are not identical with those
used in British Standards; attention is drawn especially to the following.
The comma has been used as a decimal marker. In British Standards it is current
practice to use a full point on the baseline as the decimal marker.
Wherever the words “International Standard” appear, referring to this standard,
they should be read as “British Standard”.
Cross-reference. The Technical Committee has reviewed the provisions of

ISO 4086, to which reference is made in the text, and has decided that they are

acceptable for use in conj unction with this standard.

1 Scope and field of application

This International Standard specifies the dimensions of the 50 [

fifth wheel coupling pin

which is used for coupling semi- trailers to prime movers, taking into account the limitations of weight
generally laid down by official requirements.
NOTE

If, for extra heavy- duty vehicles, this coupling pin is not sufficient, an 90 [

Ì 89 mm (3. 5 in) ] fifth wheel coupling pin according

to ISO 4086 shall be used.

In addition, this International Standard specifies the dimensional characteristics necessary for mounting
and interchangeability.
