FOREWORD
In the spring of 1920, the American Engineering Standards Committee (later successively named American Standards Association, United States of America Standards Institute, and American National Standards Institute) authorized the organization of a
Sectional Committee (later named Standards Committee) on the Standardization of Pipe
Flanges and Fittings for the purpose of unifying and further developing the flanged and
threaded fitting standards in force in this country. Designated as the joint sponsors were
the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), Heating and Piping Contractors
National Association (later named the Mechanical Contractors Association of America),
and the Manufacturers’ Standardization Society of the Valve and Fittings Industry (MSS).
Standards for solder joint fittings were originally developed by Subcommittee No. 11
of Sectional Committee A40, Minimum Requirements for Plumbing and Standardization
of Plumbing Equipment, organized in 1936 within the American Standards Association
(ASA). In 1949, responsibility for solder joint fittings was transferred to newly formed
Subcommittee No. 9 of Sectional Committee B16 on Standardization of Pipe Flanges and
Fittings.
The Sovent system for plumbing drainage systems was developed in Switzerland in
1961. Patent rights were obtained in late 1969 for the United States where the system
was finding use in high-rise developments. MSS developed and approved SP-74 in September 1970. A few months later, the MSS publication was submitted to Standards
Committee B16, which gave prompt approval to the proposal. The American National
Standards Institute (ANSI) granted approval on January 18, 1973. A revision adding
three dimensions for each fitting and including metric equivalents throughout was approved by ANSI in June 1979.
In June 1982, American National Standards Committee B16 became ASME B16 Standards Committee, operating with the same scope, under ASME procedures accredited
by ANSI. Subcommittee J (formerly 9) began a further revision of the standard in 1982
which resulted in editorial changes to the text and tables as well as an update of the
referenced standards. Following approval by Subcommittee J, the B16 Standards Committee and ASME, ANSI granted approval of the Standard on November 2, 1984.
This 1992 Edition of ASME B16.32 omits metric units, establishing US. customary
units as the standard. Changes were made in order to improve the text. Following approval by the B16 Standards Committee and ASME, approval as an American National
Standard was given on February 28, 1992, with the designation ASME B16.32-1992.
Requests for interpretations and suggestions for revision should be sent to the Secretary, B16 Committee, The American Society of Mechanical Engineers, United Engineering Center, 345 East 47th Street, New York, NY 10017.

CAST COPPER ALLOY SOLDER JOINT FITTINGS
FOR SOVENT DRAINAGE SYSTEMS
O
O
1 SCOPE
4 SIZES
1.1 General
(u) The size of the fittings shown in the following
tables corresponds to the drainage tube size shown
in ASTM B 306.
.(b) Fittings are designated by the size of the opening in the sequence illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2.
This Standard for cast copper alloy solder joint
DWV (Drain-Waste-Vent) fittings used on self-aerating one pipe Sovent systems covers the following:
(u) description
(b) pitch
(c) Sizes and methods of designating openings for
reduced fittings
(d) marking
(e) material
v) metal thickness
(¿TI design
(h) tests
5 MARKING
Each fitting shall be marked permanently and legibly with the manufacturer’s name or trademark and
with DWV SOVENT.
6 MATERIAL
1.2 Units of Measurement
Castings shall be copper alloy, produced to meet
either
(u) the requirements of ASTM B 62 Alloy C83600,
or
(b) the chemical and tensile requirements of
ASTM B 584 Alloy C83800 or C84400;
and in all other respects, the requirements of ASTM
B 62.
U.S. customary units are the standard. For conversion to metric SI units, 1in. = 25.4 mm (not applicable to drainage tube size).
2 DESCRIPTION
O
(u) These fittings are designed to perform hydraulically and pneumatically under full fixture load
in buildings utilizing the self-aerating one pipe (Sovent) system.
(b) Manufacturers are cautioned that configurations shown in Figs. 3 and 4 are critical and are based
on careful testing. The dimensions specified herein
shall govern in all cases.
(c) All connections listed herein shall be female
solder joint fitting ends made to receive copper tube
diameter and conform to Table 1 of ASME B16.23.
7 METAL THICKNESS
Dimensional variations may occur in the casting
process. Pattern equipment shall be designed to produce the metal thickness given for fittings in Table l
of ASME B16.23. Any final fitting metal wall thickness less than 90% of the thickness given in the table
is unacceptable.
8 DESIGN FEATURES
3 PITCH
(a) The liquid or air flow area on either side of
baffle Q (see Fig. 3) in the aerator fitting shall not
be less than the cross-sectional area of the nominal
tube size of the main line.
All nominal 90 deg. drain openings shall be pitched
to result in a downward slope of in./ft (2.1%) as
shown in Fig. 3.

(b) Aerator fitting with double soil entries shall
have baffle P (see Fig. 3).
(c) Alternate Design. The top part of the offset portion of the aerator fitting may utilize a cast 45 deg.
street elbow with nominal size radii on NPS 3 and 4
fittings (4 in. R for size 4, 3 in. R for size 3; see Fig.
3). Elbows with shorter than nominal size radii on
sizes 3 and 4 will not suffice for reasons other than
strength. Care must be taken to ensure that entry
elbow is in line with the outlet portion of the fitting.
(d) The cross-sectional area (see Fig. 4) opposite
the baffle (flow area) on the deaerator fittings shall
be from 1.2 to 1.4 times the nominal tube size.
9 TESTS
Each fitting shall be subjected to a hydrostatic
pressure of 25 psig. The fitting &all not leak water
nor sweat at any part of the surface. Alternative tests
that demonstrate the same degree of soundness and
strength may be substituted for the hydrostatic pressure test.
