European Commission to provide reliable, accurate and reproducible procedures and methods

of measuring airborne acoustical noise of household appliances, which take into account the
recognised state-of-the-art measurement methods.
This European Standard in conjunction with Part 1 specifies the test code for the
determination of airborne acoustical noise emission of household refrigerators, frozen-food
storage cabinets and food freezers for household and similar use. It shall be applied
implementing Commissions delegated Regulation No 1060/2010 supplementing Directive
2010/30/EU of the European Parliament and of the Council with regard to energy labelling of
household refrigerating appliances.
For determining and verifying airborne acoustical noise emission values declared on a printed
label as well as in a product fiche and in the technical documentation, see EN 60704-3.

INTRODUCTION
The measuring conditions specified in this part of 60704 provide for sufficient accuracy in
determining the noise emitted and comparing the results of measurements taken by different
laboratories, whilst simulating as far as possible the practical use of household refrigerators,
frozen-food storage cabinets and food freezers.
It is recommended to consider the determination of noise levels as part of a comprehensive
testing procedure covering many aspects of the properties and performance of household
refrigerators, frozen-food storage cabinets and food freezers.
NOTE

As stated in the introduction to IEC 60704-1, this test code is concerned with airborne noise only.

frozen-food storage cabinets and food freezers

1

Scope and object

This clause of Part 1 is applicable except as follows:
1.1

Scope

1.1.1

General

Addition:
These particular requirements apply to refrigerators, frozen-food storage cabinets and food
freezers (fitted with their accessories) for household and similar use, supplied from the mains
or from batteries.
1.1.2

Types of noise

Replacement:
The methods specified in ISO 3743-1, ISO 3743-2 and ISO 3744 can be used for measuring
noise emitted by refrigerators, frozen-food storage cabinets and food freezers.
1.1.3

Size of the source

Replacement:
The method specified in ISO 3744 is applicable to noise sources of any size. When applying

ISO 3743-1 and ISO 3743-2, care should be taken that the maximum size of the refrigerator,
frozen-food storage cabinet or food freezer under test fulfils the requirements specified in 1.3
of ISO 3743-1 and ISO 3743-2.
1.2

Object

Addition:
These described methods are specified for appliances without an operator present.
Requirements for the declaration of noise emission values are not within the scope of this
standard.
NOTE 101 For determining and verifying noise emission values declared in product specifications, see
IEC 60704-3.

1.3

Measurement uncertainty

Replacement:
The estimated values of standard deviations of sound power levels determined according to
this standard are indicated in Table 101:

Terms and definitions

This clause of Part 1 is applicable except as follows:
Addition:
3.101
running period
for a refrigerator, frozen-food storage cabinet or food freezer, period which begins when the
compressor turns on and ends when the compressor turns off
3.102
accessory
detachable part intended to be loaded by things to be cooled
3.103
temperature control cycle
time within the repetitive temperature pattern between two successive temperature warmest
points or two successive temperature coldest points
3.104
steady state
considered as being achieved when the mean values of the compartment internal
temperatures as stated in 6.4.2 are within the mentioned tolerances over a temperature
control cycle

Direct method

Addition:
NOTE 101 If pure tone components are present in the noise emitted by the source, the estimated standard
deviation of the measured sound pressure levels in the special reverberation room can increase. In such cases
additional microphone positions or source positions could be necessary as specified in ISO 3743-2.

4.3

Comparison method

Addition:
NOTE 101 If pure tone components are present in the noise emitted by the source, the estimated standard
deviation of the measured sound pressure levels in the hard-walled test room or in the special reverberation room
can increase. In such cases additional microphone positions or source positions could be necessary as specified in

ISO 3743-1 or ISO 3743-2.

5

Instrumentation

This clause of Part 1 is applicable except as follows:
5.2.1
Replacement:
The temperature is determined with instruments having an accuracy of ± 0,5 °C.

6

Operation and location of appliances under test

manufacturer’s instructions in an appropriate test enclosure according to Annex B of Part 1.
Regardless of the manufacturer’s instructions, the test enclosure shall have a back plane.
When measuring a device to be built-in, care should be taken that the ventilation around the
appliance is according to the manufacturer’s instructions; this can imply special precautions at
the bottom or top of the test enclosure.

Measurement of sound pressure levels

This clause of Part 1 is applicable except as follows:
7.1
Microphone array, measurement surface and RSS location for essentially freefield conditions over reflecting plane(s)
7.1.3
Replacement:
For floor-standing cabinet-type appliances for placing against a wall, including built-in
appliances of larger size with a height exceeding 2 d, but less than or equal 5 d, the
measurement surface is a parallelepiped with 10 microphone positions, as specified in
Figure 101. Additional measurement positions may be required according to 7.3.2 of
ISO 3744:1994. The number of microphone positions may also be reduced according to 7.4.2
of ISO 3744:1994.
NOTE 101

The front of the appliance is directed in the direction of the x-axis.

The preferred value of the measurement distance d is 1 m.

7.4.1
Addition:
The A-weighted time averaged sound pressure level shall be measured from 1 min after the
start of a running period to the end of this running period.
To obtain the final result three consecutive measurements shall be carried out. The final result
