Foreword
The text of document 86B/2440/FDIS, future edition 2 of IEC 61300-2-22, prepared by SC 86B, Fibre
optic interconnecting devices and passive components, of IEC TC 86, Fibre optics, was submitted to the
IEC-CENELEC parallel vote and was approved by CENELEC as EN 61300-2-22 on 2007-04-01.

This European Standard supersedes EN 61300-2-22:1997.
EN 61300-2-22:1997 specifies tests Na and Nb of EN 60068-2-14, however this EN 61300-2-22:2007
describes the test method of Nb and specifies “optional cycle” for some other performance categories.
The following dates were fixed:
– latest date by which the EN has to be implemented
at national level by publication of an identical
national standard or by endorsement

(dop)

2008-01-01

– latest date by which the national standards conflicting
with the EN have to be withdrawn

(dow)

2010-04-01

Annexes ZA and ZB have been added by CENELEC.

FIBRE OPTIC INTERCONNECTING DEVICES AND
PASSIVE COMPONENTS –
BASIC TEST AND MEASUREMENT PROCEDURES –
Part 2-22: Tests – Change of temperature

1

Scope

This part of IEC 61300 describes a procedure to determine the suitability of a fibre optic
device to withstand the effects of a change of temperature or a succession of changes of
temperature.

2

Normative references

The following referenced documents are indispensable for the application of this document.
For dated references, only the edition cited applies. For undated references, the latest edition
of the referenced document (including any amendments) applies.
IEC 60068-2-14, Basic environmental testing procedures – Part 2-14: Tests – Test N: Change
of temperature

3

General description

This procedure is conducted in accordance with IEC 60068-2-14, test Nb. The device under
test (DUT) is first subjected to one extreme of temperature for a given period of time. It is then
subjected to the other extreme of temperature for an equal period of time.

4

Apparatus

The apparatus consists of suitable environmental chambers in accordance with IEC 60068-214, test Nb.

The rate of change of temperature shall be: (1 ± 0,2) °C/min

5

Procedure

These procedures are in accordance with IEC 60068-2-14, test Nb.
Unless otherwise stated in the relevant specification:

include 1,5 m of cable in the climatic chamber for each port monitored during the test;

if optical measurements are requested during the test by the relevant specification, these
measurements shall be performed (at a minimum) at the end of each dwell at each
temperature extreme;

allow dependence on wavelength scan time for components that require wavelength
scanning.

–5–
Preconditioning

Unless otherwise stated in the relevant specification, maintain the DUT under standard
atmospheric conditions for 2 h minimum. Clean the mechanical and optical alignment parts of
the DUT according to the manufacturer's instructions.

5.2

Initial measurements

Take initial examinations and measurements as required by the relevant specification.
5.3

Testing

5.3.1 Place the specimen in the chamber in its normal operating position and make
connections to the monitoring equipment.
5.3.2 Unless otherwise specified, the temperature profile in Figure 1 shall be applied. Start
at standard atmospheric conditions and ramp down to the low temperature T A at 1 °C/min.
Maintain the low temperature during t 1 for a minimum of 60 min. Ramp up to the high
temperature T B at 1 °C/min. Maintain the temperature during t 1 , then ramp down to the low
temperature and repeat this profile for the required number of cycles.

NOTE It is permissible to increase the dwell time at each extreme to allow sufficient time to perform a complete
set of measurements.

5.3.3 Optional cycle: for some performance categories, it may be necessary to ramp to the
high temperature first and include a dwell at room temperature between ramps to the extreme
temperatures. In this case, the profile in Figure 2 shall be applied.
Start at standard atmospheric conditions and ramp up to the high temperature T at 1 °C/min.
Then maintain the high temperature during t 1 for a minimum of 60 min. Ramp down to
standard atmospheric conditions at 1 °C/min. Maintain standard atmospheric conditions for a
minimum of 60 min. Ramp down to the low temperature T L at 1 °C/min. Maintain that
temperature during t 1 for a minimum of 60 min. Ramp up to standard atmospheric conditions
at 1 °C/min and dwell for a minimum of 60 min. The subsequent cycles will have the same
pattern.

Final measurements

Record final measurements as required by the relevant specification. Unless otherwise
specified in the relevant specification, clean the DUT according to the manufacturer's
instructions prior to recording final measurements.

6

Severity

Each of the following severities consist of a combination of a low temperature with the
corresponding high temperature and the corresponding number of cycles. One of them shall
be specified in the relevant specification:
