Reported Speech

Reported speech (câu tường thuật/ câu gián
tiếp)
-

Reported speech is when we tell someone what another person said.

Lặp lại y nguyên lời Lisa: Lisa said, 'I'm tired.' = Lisa nói 'Mình mệt."
Hoặc thuật lại lời nói của Lisa: Lisa said that she was tired.

 Chọn động từ tường thuật (told, said, asked, suggested…)
 “Lùi thì” động từ
 Đổi đại từ nhân xưng, đại từ sở hữu và tính từ sở hữu
 Đổi trạng từ thời gian/ nơi chốn

1. Statements (Câu phát biểu):
Direct speech

Reported/ Indirect speech

Tom says: “I am a student.”

Tom says he is a student.

My mom says: “I will go to Paris.”

My mom says she will go to Paris.

Chủ ngữ nói ở Q khứ đơn -> lùi thì
S + said: “clause”

S + told + sb (that) + clause (lùi thì)
S + said (that)/ said to sb that + clause (lùi thì)

Mary said, “I am watching TV.”

Mary said (that)/ said to me that she was
watching TV.

She said, ‘My brother is a doctor.’

She told me (that) her brother was a doctor.

Tom said, “I want to see this movie with my girlfriend tomorrow.”

-

Tom told Kelly (that)...
Tom said (that)/ said to Kelly that ...
ta dùng “to”.

asked = yêu cầu
denied = phủ nhận
promised = hứa
suggested = gợi ý, đề nghị…

Tuy nhiên, những từ này thường không sử dụng cấu trúc said that hay told somebody
that, mà sử dụng cấu trúc V-ing hoặc To + Verb, ví dụ như asked somebody + To
I want to see this movie with my girlfriend tomorrow.
→ Tom said that I want to see this movie with my girlfriend tomorrow.

Direct speech
Present simple (Hiện tại đơn)
I like ice cream

Reported speech
Past simple (Quá khứ đơn)
He said he liked ice cream

Present continous (Hiện tại tiếp
diễn)
I am living in London

Past continuous (Quá khứ tiếp diễn)
He said he was living in London.

Present perfect (Hiện tại hoàn
thành)
I haven't seen Julie

Past perfect (Quá khứ hoàn thành)
He said he hadn't seen Julie.

Present perfect continuous (Hiện

Past perfect continuous (Quá khứ hoàn thành

tại hoàn thành tiếp diễn)
tiếp diễn)
Lan said, ‘I have been waiting for you Lan said (that) she had been waiting for me for 2
for 2 hours.’
hours.
Past simple (Quá khứ đơn)
I bought a car

Past simple/ Past perfect
He said he had bought a car

Past continous
I was walking along the street

Past perfect continous
He said he had been walking along the street.

Past perfect
nữa)
I had taken English lessons before

He said he had taken English lessons before.
Past perfect continuous

Past perfect continuous (khơng đổi vì khơng thể
lùi thì được nữa)

Future simple (Tương lai đơn)
My mother said, ‘I will visit Hue city’

Present conditional/ Future in the Past (Tương
lai đơn trong quá khứ)
My mother said (that) she would visit Hue city.

Future continuous
He said, ‘I will be sitting at the café’

Present continuous conditional (Tương lai tiếp
diễn trong quá khứ)
He said (that) he would be sitting at the café’

Modal verbs (Động từ khuyết thiếu)
Can
I can speak perfect English

Could
She said (that) she could speak perfect English.

May
I may be late
You may wait here.

Might (khả năng)/ Could (sự cho phép)
He said he might be late  (khả năng)
He said we could wait there (sự cho phép)

Shall
I shall come later

Would
She said (that) she would come later.

Must
‘You must go back before 10.’
‘It must be wonderful to live there.’

Had to (sự bắt buộc)/ Must (chắc hẳn)
She said (that) I had to go back before 10.
She said she it must be wonderful to live there.

LƯU Ý: Should/ Ought to/ Could/ Might/ Would giữ nguyên trong lời nói gián tiếp.
I want to see this movie with my girlfriend tomorrow.
→ Tom said that I wanted to see this movie with my girlfriend tomorrow.

→ Tom said that he wanted to see this movie with his girlfriend tomorrow.

I want to see this movie with my girlfriend tomorrow.
→ Tom said that he wanted to see that movie with his girlfriend the following day.

2. Questions (Câu hỏi):
Yes/No questions (Câu hỏi Yes/ No):
 Dùng từ tường thuật: asked, wondered, wanted to know, …(asked, wonderes,
wanted to know are common reporting verbs)
 Thêm từ if hoặc whether trước câu hỏi (the verb is joined to the reported words
with IF/ WHETHER – nếu/ liệu mà)
 Đổi lại vị trí của chủ ngữ và động từ / trợ động từ
 [S1 + asked… + (O) + if/ whether + S2 + V (lùi thì)]
Eg: Lisa said to Ben "Did you see Tom this morning?"
 Chọn từ tường thuật: vì Lisa hỏi Ben nên chúng ta dùng asked Ben
 Lùi thì động từ: did see thành had seen

 Đổi các đại từ và các tính từ sở hữu: đổi you thành he
 Đổi các từ chỉ nơi chốn và thời gian: this morning -> that morning
→ Lisa asked Ben had he seen Tom that morning.
Bây giờ, ta làm thêm 2 bước nữa:
 Thêm từ if hoặc whether trước câu hỏi: Lisa asked Ben if had he seen Tom that
morning.
 Hốn đổi vị trí của chủ ngữ và động từ / trợ động từ: had he seen thành he had
seen
→ Lisa asked Ben if he had seen Tom that morning.
WH-questions (Câu hỏi có từ để hỏi - when/ what, how…)

Giữ lại từ hỏi
Đổi lại vị trí của chủ ngữ và động từ / trợ động từ

 [S1 + asked +(O) + WH + S2 + V (lùi thì)].
Eg: Mary said: “Where can I find Lisa?”
 Lùi thì động từ: can -> could
 Đổi các đại từ và các tính từ sở hữu: đổi I thành he
→ Tom asked where could he find Lisa.
Bây giờ, ta làm thêm 2 bước nữa:
 Giữ lại từ hỏi: giữ lại từ where
 Hoán đổi vị trí của chủ ngữ và động từ / trợ động từ: could he hoán đổi thành he
could
→ Tom asked where he could find Lisa.

Ngoài ra, nếu chủ ngữ trong câu hỏi là I thì chúng ta có thể dùng To + Verb:
 Câu hỏi: Where can I find Lisa?
Câu tường thuật 1: He asked where he could find Lisa.
Câu tường thuật 2: He asked where to find Lisa.

3. Commands (Câu mệnh lệnh)
*Khẳng định: Told sb to do st
Eg: “Please wait for me here, Mary.” Tom said. (yêu cầu)
→ Tom told Mary to wait for him there.
*Phủ định: Told sb NOT to do st
Eg: “Don’t talk in class” the teacher said to us. → The teacher told us not to
talk in class.
