microwave passi ve components, of I EC technical comm ittee 46: Cabl es, wires, wavegu ides,
RF con nectors, RF an d m icrowave passive componen ts and accessories.
Th is second editi on cancels and replaces th e first edition pu blished i n 1 964. This edition
consti tu tes a technical revisi on .
Th is edi tion inclu des th e followin g sig ni fican t technical chang es wi th respect to the previous
edition :
a) expan d the operati on frequency ran g e;
b) revise the equ ation of attenuation.

I NTRODUCTI ON
Th is I n ternati onal Standard relates to strai gh t h ollow metall ic tu bi ng for u se as waveg u ides in
electron ic equ ipm ent. I n recen t years, the operati on frequ ency of waveg u ide com pon en ts and
systems has been extended to 1 TH z and above. H owever, th e first edition of the I EC 601 53
series of stan dards on ly specified the apertu re di mensions for ordinary rectang u lar wavegu ide
for frequenci es u p to 325 GH z. I n addition, th e first edi tion of the I EC 601 53 series of
standards, datin g from the 1 960's, does not meet th e needs of the cu rren t applicati ons. This
n ew edi tion of I EC 601 53-1 addresses these two issu es by extendin g the frequ ency coverag e
to 3 300 GH z and by addressing current applicati ons for th is type of waveg u ide.
Th is standard takes in to accou n t I EC 60068 when necessary.

Scope

Th is part of I EC 601 53 speci fies strai gh t holl ow metal lic tu bi ng for use as waveg u i des in
electronic equ i pm ent.
I t covers:
a) th e detai ls necessary to ensure compati bil ity an d, as far as essen ti al , in terchan g eabil ity;
b) test meth ods;
c) u ni form requi remen ts for th e electrical an d m echan ical properti es.
I t shou ld be noted that no recommen dations are m ade for the materi als to be used for
wavegu ides. The ch oice of materi al is ag reed between custom er and man u factu rer.

5 Standard atmospheric conditions for testing
U nless otherwise speci fi ed, all tests shall be carried ou t under standard atm ospheric
conditions for testin g as speci fied i n I EC 60068.
Before the measuremen ts are m ade, th e waveg u ide shall be stored at the m easuring
temperatu re for a ti me su fficien t to al low the en tire waveg u ide to reach this temperatu re.
Wh en measu rem en ts are m ade at a temperature other than the speci fi ed temperatu re, the
resu l ts shall, wh ere n ecessary, be corrected to the specified temperature. The ambien t
temperatu re at which the m easu remen ts are made shall be stated in th e test report.
As these recomm endations onl y cover type tests, these defin itions are inclu ded on ly for bri ef
in formation of testi ng con di tions.

6 Visual inspection
The wavegu ides shal l be u ni form in com position an d in wal l thickness and shall be straig h t
and smooth from end to end. There shal l be n o bu rrs, cracks, die marks, ch atter marks, dirt,
g rease or oth er irreg u larities of th e su rface.
Both in ner an d ou ter su rface shall have a clean brig h t appearance in accordance with g ood
cu rren t practice.

7 Mechanical requirements
7.1 Dimensions
7.1 .1 General
The dimensions of the waveg u ides an d th e tolerances th ereon shall be in accordance with the
valu es g iven on the relevan t specifi cation sheets. Dimensi ons and tolerance sh all be gi ven
both in mill im etres and i nches, indi cating in wh ich system of un i ts the dimensions were
ori g inated.
I n dependen t of th e system of u ni ts, the nomi nal dimensions of th e inside and ou tsi de cross
section sh all be g i ven in su ch a way that th e valu es, the first dig it of wh ich is 3 to 9, sh ou ld be

The bow is measured on th e external su rface of the wavegu ide. For a len g th of 1 0 tim es the
i nternal width , the extern al bow shal l not exceed 1 0 ti mes th e speci fied tolerance on the

For a leng th of 50 tim es the in ternal width , the extern al bow sh al l not exceed 40 tim es the
speci fied tolerance on the in tern al width .
For the determination of the external bow, th e wavegu ide shall be so posi ti oned th at g ravi ty

does n ot tend to affect the am oun t of bow.

7.2.2

Twist

Twist is defined as th e rotati on, over a specified len g th , of the cross-secti on of the wavegu ide
arou nd the long i tudinal axis.
The rate of twist shal l not exceed:


0, 50 per m etre for waveg u ides wi th an internal width equ al or l arg er th an 1 00 m m ;



0, 50 per leng th of waveg u i de equ al to ten tim es the in ternal wi dth when the latter is less

wi th in the specified tolerances.
