I NTRODUCTI ON
Standards and deli verabl es of the I EC 60728 series deal wi th cable networks i nclu ding
equ ipment an d associated m ethods of measurem ent for headen d recepti on, processing and
distribu ti on of television an d sound sig n als and for processing , in terfacin g and transm itting al l
kinds of data sig nals for i n teractive services usi ng all applicabl e transmission media. These
sig n als are typical ly transm itted in networks by frequ ency-mu ltiplexing tech ni ques.
Th is inclu des for instance
•
reg ional and l ocal broadband cable networks,
•
extended satel li te and terrestri al televi sion distribu tion systems,
indi vidu al satel li te an d terrestri al televi si on receivi ng systems,
and all kinds of equ ipmen t, systems and install ations u sed i n such cable networks, distribu ti on
and recei vi ng systems.
•
The extent of this standardization work is from the an tenn as and/or special si g nal sou rce
inpu ts to the headend or oth er in terface points to th e network u p to the term inal inpu t of th e
custom er prem ises equ ipment.
The stan dardization work will consider coexistence wi th u sers of the RF spectru m i n wired
and wireless transm ission systems.
The standardizati on of any u ser term inals (i. e. tu n ers, recei vers, decoders, mu l tim edia
term inals, etc. ) as well as of an y coaxi al, balanced and optical cables and accessories thereof
is exclu ded.
The reception of television sig nals i nside a bu i lding requ i res an ou tdoor an tenna and a
distribu ti on n etwork to con vey the sig nal to th e TV receivers.
The instal lati on of an outdoor an tenn a for each TV receiver sh ou ld be avoided for techn ical,
economical and practical reasons.
I n a bu il di ng divided i nto apartment blocks, the instal lation of a master an tenna television
system for terrestrial (M ATV) and/or satell i te (SM ATV) reception , as shown in Fig ure 1 ,
Fi g ure 2, Fig u re 3, Figu re 4 an d Fig u re 5, describing as an exampl e the variou s parts of the
system is usu al. Most of the terms used in the I EC 60728 series can be referred to th ese
fi g u res.
Wh en si g nals to be conveyed to the TV recei vers are picked up far away, for g eograph ical
reasons, and th e nu mber of u sers (su bscri bers) is very h ig h , the installation of a cable
n etwork u sin g coaxial cabl es and/or fibre optic cables is used, as in dicated in Fig ure 4,
describing as an example the various parts of the system .
A system model of a cable network i s shown in Fi g ure 5, where the m ain parts of the systems
are indicated, as defined in Clau se 3.
Th is standard deals wi th dig ital sign als only.
For forward path analogu e si gnals refer to I EC 60728-1 . For return paths sig nals (analog u e
and dig i tal) refer to I EC 60728-1 0.
Clause 4 defines the meth ods of measuremen t of the system perform ance parameters at the
system ou tlet.
Clause 5 defin es the system performance limi ts wh ich will , with an u n im paired i npu t,
(headen d inpu t sig nal) , produ ce pictu re and sou nd sign als (at system ou tlets) wh ere th e
qu ali ty requ irement is a quasi-error-free (QEF) reception .
Appropri ate performance requ iremen ts for the sig n als at the recei vin g an tennas site are g iven
in Clau se 6 i n order to provide, at th e inpu t of th e headend of the cable network, for dig i tal
television sig nals with su i tabl e qu al ity.

Clau se 7 is appl icable to hom e networks (inclu din g those of indi vidu al receivin g systems)
usin g coaxial cables, balanced cabl es or optical cabl es and is primaril y in tended for television
sig n als, sou nd si g nals and in teracti ve services, operating between abou t 30 MH z and
3 000 MH z. Clause 7 also considers basic operati onal ch aracteristics of a home network,
specifies the requ iremen ts with respect to the h ome network in terface (H N I ) taking in to
accoun t the performance requ iremen ts g i ven at the system ou tl et or at the term inal inpu t.
