There are a number of natural disasters that can strike across the globe. Two that are frequently
linked to one another are earthquakes and tsunamis. Both of them can cause a great amount of

H

devastation when they hit. However, tsunamis are the direct result of earthquakes and cannot happen

ay

without them.

M

The Earth has three main parts. They are the crust, the mantle, and the core. The crust is the

n

ie

outer layer of the Earth. It is not a single piece of land. Instead, it is comprised of a number of plates.
There are a few enormous plates and many smaller ones. These plates essentially rest upon the mantle,

i
Ph

which is fluid. As a result, the plates are in constant - yet slow - motion. The plates may move away from
or towards other plates. In some cases, they collide violently with the plates adjoining them. The

im
K

movement of the plates causes tension in the rock. Over a long time, this tension may build up. When it
is released, an earthquake happens.

Va

Tens of thousands of earthquakes happen every year. The vast majority are so small that only
scientific instruments can perceive them. Others are powerful enough that people can feel them, yet

n

they cause little harm or damage. More powerful earthquakes, however, can cause buildings, bridges,
and other structures to collapse. They may additionally injure and kill thousands of people and might
even cause the land to change it appearance.

Since most of the Earth's surface is water, numerous earthquakes happen beneath the planet's
oceans. Underwater earthquakes cause the seafloor to move. This results in the displacement of water
in the ocean. When this occurs, a tsunami may form. This is a wave that forms on the surface and moves
in all directions from the place where the earthquake happened. A tsunami moves extremely quickly

:T
ge

and can travel thousands of kilometres. As it approaches land, the water near the coast gets sucked out
to sea. This causes the tsunamis to increase in height. Minutes later, the tsunami arrives. A large tsunami
- one more than ten meters in height - can travel far inland. As it does that, it can flood the land, destroy
human settlements, and kill large numbers of people.

The organization of the family system in the United States emphasizes monogamy, neolocal

residence, an extended family linkage, and a relatively free choice in the selection of mates. Compared

n

to those in many other countries, American families are usually small and isolated. Family and marital

i
Ph

roles for men and women overlap considerably, with little differentiation. Marriage and divorce rates
are high, and, according to demographic estimate, 95 percent or more of the adult population marry in

im
K

the course of their lives. The rise in the divorce and remarriage rate has made definitions of family
increasingly complex, although several basic patterns have remained stable.

Va

The smallest family consists of two persons: a husband and a wife, a parent and a child, or a sister
and a brother. Nuclear families include two or more persons who are related by marriage, blood, or

n

adoption and who share a common household. A wide range of appropriate kinship patterns have
developed in the past two decades, but marriage, an exclusive relationship between two people, is

predominant. The only norm that is universally recognized by society and by law permits a person to

have only one spouse in a monogamous family. Serial monogamy has become ubiquitous, and it assumes
that persons can have more than one spouse in the course of their lives, as long as there is only one
spouse at a time.
Social norms pertaining to the choice of marriage partners prescribe appropriate and acceptable

characteristics. Most societies, including the U.S., grant acceptance to endogamous partners who marry
within their own racial, ethnic, socioeconomic, education, age, and religious groups. Traditionally, such
norms are justified by common belief so that those who share similar role expectations, values, attitudes
and customs are less likely to find themselves in conflict. On the other hand, an outcome of endogamous

marriages maybe that partners' similar socioeconomic levels tend to keep wealth and power within the
