Max lives in the city with his family. He
plans to visit his cousin, Sara. Sara lives on a
farm in the country.

Max loves to go to Sara’s farm. He visits as
often as he can. He likes to play with Sara. He
has so much fun.

Today Max’s dad will take him to visit Sara
and her family. Max is excited when he gets to
the farm. “Hello, Sara!” he shouts.
“Hi, Max!” Sara says. Just then Max sees a
bird sitting on a branch.

Sara spies another bird on the branch.
“1 plus 1 is 2. A double! A double is adding
two numbers that are the same.”

Sara has two dogs that like to run and play
with each other. Sara and Max play fetch with
the dogs. Max thinks about doubles.

“I get it now,” he says. “Each dog has 2 ears.
2 plus 2 is 4. That is a double, too.”

Sara and Max enjoy the fresh air. Being
outside makes them hungry. It is a good
thing it is snack time soon. Sara’s mom
brings them something to eat.

The cousins have crackers with peanut
butter for their snack. Sara takes 3 crackers
and Max chooses 3 crackers. They have 6
crackers in all. Another double!

Now the cousins go for a walk, and Sara’s
mom comes, too. They hunt for four-leaf clovers.
The clover plants grow in the grassy meadow.

Sara sits in the meadow and looks closely
for the special clover plants. She discovers
two plants. Each has 4 leaves! 4 plus 4 is 8.

Max and Sara head to the small stream
on Sara’s farm. They take off their shoes.
They wade in the cool, bubbling water.

“Look, my toes are a double!” Max says.
“I have 5 toes on each foot.”
Sara looks at her toes. “Mine, too,” she says.
Sara and Max wiggle their toes in the water.

Later, Sara shows Max the vegetable
garden. Beans, corn, and other vegetable
plants grow there. Max likes to eat corn,
but Sara likes carrots best.
Chapter 3:
More Doubles Fun

She pulls 6 long carrots from the ground.
Max pulls out 6 carrots, too. They take 12
carrots to Sara’s mom. She will clean the
carrots and save them for supper.

Next, the cousins visit the chickens in the
chicken coop. Some of the chickens sit on
nests. Sara shows Max how to find eggs in
the nests. They each get a large basket. Sara
and Max fill their baskets with eggs.

Sara fills her basket with 7 eggs. Max
finds 7 eggs, too. More doubles fun!

Sara and Max walk to Sara’s house. Sara
sees two spiders up high on the porch. The
spiders are making webs. “Look, a spider
city!” says Sara.

Sara and Max look more closely. Each spider
has 8 long legs.
Max says, “8 legs and 8 more legs makes
16 legs in all.” A double again!

It is almost time for Max to go home. The
cousins rest under some tall apple trees. The
branches hold many red apples.

One Last Double

Max picks 9 apples. Sara picks 9 apples,
too. Max will bring all 18 apples home to his
dad. They will remind Max of the doubles
fun he had today with Sara.
