Chapter 1:
Who Wants to Write?
There is a special visitor at school today.
A writer talks to the class about the books
he writes. He writes stories about lots of
different things. Many of his stories are
about animals who can talk.
3
Von, Sara, and Jane love the stories the
author shares. Some of his stories make
them laugh out loud! Von, Sara, and Jane
want to write stories, too. They decide to
start a writing club so that they can write
books together and draw pictures to go in
them.
4
The next day they meet at Jane’s house
to talk about the stories they will write and
the pictures they will draw. Each child has
ideas for stories to write. Von wants to write
stories about animals.
5
The friends need some supplies to get

started. Sara says they need pencils. Jane
thinks they need a pink block eraser. Von
says they need paper. He wants to find
a notebook that can hold a lot of stories
because the writing club will be busy!

Chapter 2:
Von makes a list of the things they need
to buy. The children put money in their
pockets. They each have coins to use to pay
for their supplies. They are ready to go to
the store with Jane’s mom.

At the store, the children look for the
items they need to buy. Von takes the list
out of his pocket and reads it again. He
hopes they have enough money to buy
everything on the list. Then they walk
through the store to find the items.

11
They walk to the counter and pay for their
items. Now they have what they need for
their writing club, and they even have some
coins left over. Jane has a coin left in her
pocket. Sara and Von have coins left, too.
12
Chapter 3:

85¢ in all!

14
Chapter 4:
More Things to Buy
The children can buy something else for
their writing club. What should they buy?
They stop and think. They think about what
other supplies would help them write great
stories.
15
95¢
Von thinks they should buy a pack of
colored pencils. The club can use them to
color pictures for their stories. The pack of
pencils costs 95¢. The children look at their
coins and see there is not enough money to
buy the colored pencils.
16
90¢
Sara thinks they should buy markers to
help make their pictures bright and colorful.
The price of the markers is 90¢. The children
look at their coins again. There is not
enough money to buy the markers.
17
85¢
Jane thinks they should buy a box of
crayons since they do not cost as much as
markers. The price of a box of crayons is
85¢. The children look at their coins one
more time and see they have enough money

to buy the crayons.
18
The crayons will be perfect for drawing
pictures. The children go to the counter
again. They put their coins on the counter
and pay for the crayons. Now they have all
the things they need to start writing stories.
19
They leave the store with their items. They
have a box of pencils, a pink block eraser, a
blue notebook, and a box of crayons.
20
The children talk on the way home. They
have lots of ideas for their stories. They
share their ideas with each other and talk
about which story to write first.
21
Sara, Jane, and Von are ready to write.
They write stories and draw pictures for their
books. They will share their stories with their
class at school. They are writers now, just
like the visitor who came to school.
