II.Read the passage below and choose the best answer to each question(2pts)
It is commonly believed that school is where people go to get an education. Nevertheless, it has
been said that today children interrupt their education to go to school. The difference between schooling
and education implied by this remark is important.
Education is much more open-ended and all-inclusive than schooling. Education knows no limits. It
can take place anywhere, whether in the shower or on the job, whether in the kitchen or on a tractor. It

4

includes both the formal learning that takes place in school and the whole universe of informal learning.
The agent (doer) of education can vary from respected grandparents to the people arguing about politics on
the radio, from a child to a famous scientist. Whereas schooling has a certain predictability, education
quite often produces surprises. A chance conversation with a stranger may lead a person to discover how
little is known of other religions. People receive education from infancy on. Education, then, is a very

broad, inclusive term; it is a lifelong process, a process that starts long before the start of school, and one
that should be a necessary part of one’s entire life.
Schooling, on the other hand, is a specific, formalized process, whose general pattern varies little
from one setting to the next. Throughout a country, children arrive at school at about the same time, take
the assigned seats, are taught by an adult, use similar textbooks, do homework, take exams, and so on. The
pieces of reality that are to be learned, whether they are the alphabet or an understanding of the workings of
governments, have been limited by the subjects being taught. For example, high school students know that
they are not likely to find out in their classes the truth about political problems in their society or what the
newest filmmakers are experimenting with. There are clear and undoubted conditions surrounding the
formalized process of schooling.

B. telling the difference between the meaning of two related words
C. listing and discussing several educational problems
D. telling a story about excellent teachers

C. schooling takes place everywhere
D. schooling prevents people discovering things
3. The word “all-inclusive” in the passage mostly means ______.
A. going in many directions
B. involving many school subjects
C. allowing no exceptions
D. including everything or everyone
4. According to the passage, the doers of education are ______.
A. mostly famous scientists
B. mainly politicians
C. only respected grandparents

D. almost all people
5. What does the writer mean by saying “education quite often produces surprises”?
A. Educators often produce surprises.
B. It’s surprising that we know little about other religions.
C. Success of informal learning is predictable. D. Informal learning often brings about unexpected results.
6. Which of the following would the writer support?
A. Without formal education, people won’t be able to read and write.
B. Schooling is of no use because students do similar things every day.

D. Going to school is only part of how people become educated.
7. The word "they" in the last paragraph refers to ______.
A. workings of governments
B. political problems
C. newest filmmakers
D. high school students
8. Because the general pattern of schooling varies little from one setting to the next, school children
throughout the country ______.
A. do similar things
B. have the same abilities
C. are taught by the same teachers
D. have similar study conditions
9. From the passage, we can infer that a high school teacher ______.
A. is free to choose anything to teach
B. is not allowed to teach political issues
C. has to teach social issues to all classes
D. is bound to teach programmed subjects

TAPESCRIPT 1
Man: Hi, Sis. I just came over to drop off the DVDs you wanted, and . . . Hey, wow!? Where did you get
all of this stuff?
Woman: I bought it. So, what do you think of my new entertainment center? And the widescreen TV . . .
Man: Bought it?
Woman: . . . and my new DVD player. Here, let me show you my stereo. You can really rock the house
with this one.
Man: But where did you get the dough to buy all this? You didn't borrow money from mom and dad again,
did you?

Woman: Of course not. I got it with this!
Man: This? Let me see that . . . Have you been using Dad's credit card again?
Woman: No, silly. It's mine. It's student credit card.
Man: A student credit card? How in the world did you get one of these?
Woman: I got an application in the mail.
Man: Well, why did you get one in the first place?
Woman: Listen. Times are changing, and having a credit card helps you build a credit rating, control
spending, and even buy things that you can't pay with cash . . . like the plane ticket I got recently.
Man: What plane ticket?
Woman: Oh yeah, my roommate and I are going to Hawaii over the school break, and course, I needed
some new clothes for that so . . .
Man: I don't want to hear it. How does having a student credit card control spending? It sounds
you've spent yourself in a hole. Anyway, student credit cards just lead to impulse spending . . . as I can
see here. And the interest rates of student credit cards are usually sky-high, and if you miss a payment, the
rates, well, just jump!
Woman: Ah. The credit card has a credit limit . . .
Man: . . . of $20,000?
Woman: No, no quite that high. Anyway, . . .
Man: I've heard enough.
Woman: Did I tell you we now get digital cable with over 100 channels? Oh, and here's your birthday
present. A new MP3 player . . .
Man: Yeah. Oh, don't tell me. Charged on the credit card. Listen. Hey, I don't think having a student credit
card is a bad idea, but this is ridiculous. And how in the world are you going to pay off your credit card
bill?
Woman: Um, with my birthday money? It's coming up in a week.
Man: Hey, let's sit down and talk about how you're going to pay things back, and maybe we can come up
with a budget that will help you get out of this mess. That's the least I can do.

Andrew's Sister: Hey, Andrew! An . . . ? Andrew. [ What? ] Andrew.
Andrew: What? What's going on?

Andrew's Sister: What happened to YOU?
Andrew: You mean my hair? You like my hair?
Andrew's Sister: Uh, I think you know what I mean, Andrew. Do you want me to be honest? [ What? ]
Okay. Andrew. You've put on, like, a ton of weight since I saw you at Christmas time. What on earth
happened to you?
Andrew: Why are you always so blunt?
Andrew's Sister: Well, I'm your big sister. I'm . . . what am I? Three years older than you, and I can be
blunt if I want. Besides, you used to say stuff like that to me all of the time. You used to call me fatso all
the time when I was little.

Andrew: Oh, yeah, well, to be honest, uh . . . , I started changing my life . . . . yesterday. [ Oh good! ] I'm
on the Wafu Diet.
Andrew's Sister: What? I've never even heard of the Wafu Diet. What is that?
Andrew: Ah, it's too difficult to explain. I found information about it in my junk mail the other day . . .
Andrew's Sister: What? You read your junk mail? No one reads their junk mail.
Andrew: . . . and I signed up for it, and it only cost $490.
Andrew's Sister: You're serious? [ Yeah. ] Four hundred and ninety bucks? [ Yeah. ] Like every month or
every week or . . . ?
Andrew: I didn't check that . . . ah, ah, but, but, but, but . . . I think . . .
Andrew's Sister: Listen. I think you're getting scammed, and it sounds really stupid, so listen. I'm not fat
anymore, so trust me. I . . . if you want to lose weight, you need to do it the right way.
Andrew: Well, like what?
Andrew's Sister: Well, okay.
Andrew: Okay, uh, well, look. Look at my running shoes over there.
Andrew's Sister: Andrew. They're still in the box. ( Well . . . ). Never used. Besides exercise, yeah,
exercise is wonderful. It's great, but you also need to learn how to eat right. For example, you need to eat
smaller portions. And, and you can't load up your plate with seconds and thirds like you always used to do

at the family parties.
Andrew: Well, okay. I'll just get a bigger plate!
Andrew's Sister: Andrew! That won't help. Next [ Oh, next? ]. Oh yeah. So, first of all, smaller portions
[ Okay. ] Then, you need to make sure you eat a good, well-balanced breakfast first thing in the morning [ I
do that. ] and then you follow that up with smaller meals throughout the day, cause, you know what? If you
skip breakfast, then throughout the day, you feel like you need to make up it by overeating at lunch and
dinner and lots of snacks. [ Uh . . . ]
Andrew's Sister: Anyway, um, oh yeah. Don't eat late at night. [ What? Like what? ] Well, you know a lot
of people . . . they want a . . . they want a late night snack and stuff like that, but a lot of times, ……
TAPESCRIPT 3
Interviewer: These days we all know that time is money. People don't want to waste a moment of their
lives travelling when they could be working, or let's face it, relaxing on holiday. So with this in mind, why
is the London-based company Seymour Powell working on a new form of transport which will go from
London to New York in 37 hours, when we can already get there in seven? With me here in the studio is
Mark Baker. Mark, why on earth would anyone want to travel so slowly?
Mark: Well, the company Seymour Powell have come up with the idea that 'slow is the new fast'. It's true
that people traditionally want to get to their destination as quickly as possible, but I think everyone would
agree that there is nothing pleasant about flying in a small, crowded passenger jet. That's why this company
has developed the Aircruise concept. It aims to carry people to their destination in comfort and style.
Interviewer:Rather like the old ocean liners.
Mark:You could say that.
Interviewer:So what is an Aircruise? Is it a type of plane?
Mark: No it's not. It is proposed that the Aircruise will be a huge kite-shaped airship. It will fly at 12,000
feet, but it would be able to fly at just a few hundred feet above the ground if there was something
interesting to see on the ground.
Interviewer: It sounds like a sort of luxurious hot air balloon.
Mark: Well the plan is that it will be powered, not by hot air, but another type of air. Hydrogen. Hydrogen
is capable of lifting weights of 1.2 kg per cubic metre, and you can also use hydrogen fuel to provide onboard power and drinking water. With hydrogen as the fuel, you'd be able to reach speeds of around ninety
miles per hour. It would be pollution free, and what's more, it'd be completely silent!
Interviewer: It reminds me of those airships they had back in the 1930s.

Mark: Zeppelins
Interviewer: That's right. Weren't they very dangerous?
Mark: They were rather, and after the famous Hindenburg disaster, in May 1937 which killed 35 of the 97
people on board. But technology has moved on a good deal since then, and scientists are looking at ways
that we can create transport options that are more sustainable and kinder to the environment.
Interviewer: So you mentioned that this Aircruise was going to be a luxurious form of transport. Why is
that? What sort of luxuries can a passenger expect?
Mark: Well, first of all it won't be full of people. One Aircruise ship will carry just 100 people. There'll
also be plenty of staff to attend to your every need. They're estimating that there'll be one crew member for
every five people! Thirdly, you won't be pinned in your seat for the entire journey. You'll be able to walk
around. There's to be a bar, private apartments and even a glass floor so that you can see the view beneath
your feet!
Interviewer: Gosh, I don't know if I fancy that!
Mark: No, me neither!
Interviewer: And would these airships depart from airports?
Mark: No, I think that would be very dangerous! No, the plan is that they would build special landing
pads. Compared to airports, these are much smaller, so the airships would be able to land much closer to
urban centres.
Interviewer: So, this Aircruise idea. Is it just an idea, or is it actually going into production?
