Agenda
 Introduction and Background
 Softswitch Networking Architecture
 Softswitch and next Generation Network
 Research Progress of Softswitch

Standardization

Introduction and background
 All

that
the
basic
service
of
traditional
telecommunication network is to provide voice service

 In this circuit switch , network, hardware and software

are not independent.
 The designers of IP network think that transmit network

doesn’t
need to
transmission services

provide

end-to-end

reliable

 Softswitch is

a new solution of amalgamation packetbased switch network with Public Switched Telephone
Network

 Softswitch combines the reliability of PSTN and the

flexibility of IP appropriately.

Introduction (cont)
 Softswitch enables the compatibility

between voice service of next generation
and the switch function of the traditional
PSTN transparently

What is the softswitch?

 Softswitch

is the next generation voice and
multimedia switch based on the IP technologies.

Softswitch (software switch) is an equipment and system
providing the separating of call control and media procession
by software of program control based on packet-switch
network . (ISC)
 Call Agent or Media Gateway Controller is also

called Softswitch

What is the softswitch? (cont)
A softswitch is a device that provides, at a minimum:
 Intelligence that controls connection services for a media

gateway, and/or native IP endpoints.

 It has the ability to select processes that can be applied

to a call.

 It can provide routing for a call within the network

based on signaling and customer
database information.

 It has the ability to transfer control of the call to another

network element.

 It provides interfaces to and supports management

functions such as provisioning, fault, billing, etc.

The functions of softswitch
 Access control
 Interpretation
 Routing-selection
 Gateway
 Management
 Call control
 Wide-band management
 Signaling
 Safety
 Detail recording of calls and so on.

Circuit switch vs. softswich
 Softswich is design to replace the Class 5

and Class 4 switches based on the circuit
switching technologies.
 Softswitch is a software based solution

implemented on general purpose
computers/servers,
 The traditional Class 5 and Class 4 switches

are rely on dedicated facilities for interconnection and are designed primarily for
voice communications

Open

• Software, hardware and
applications solutions typically
come packaged in a single
(proprietary) box.
• Non-standard solutions are
expensive to implement and leave
little room for innovation.

Transport Hardware

• Solutions are open standardsbased products, and can come
from multiple vendors.
• Customers are free to choose
best-in-class products to build
their network. Open standards
enable innovation and in the long
run can reduce costs

The advantages of the Softswitch vs. the
traditional circuit switch
 New services and revenue stream for service

providers
 Flexibility in deployment and operation
 Unified messaging
 Easy integration of dissimilar networks and

components
 Lower cost of solution deployment and total

ownership

Softswitch Networking Architecture
 Softswitch includes three aspects:
 It is a network solution instead of node point

solution like centralized switchboard.
 It is a solution combining the distribution and

centralization.
 It is a soft solution and the important method

is the interface protocols between control
logic and network units in the softswitch.

Softswitch Networking Architecture (cont)
 Softswitch separates the service control,

transmit and medium access and each entity
connects and communicates by standard
protocols
 All the network is divided into four layers:
 Medium access layer
 Transport service layer
 Control layer
 Application layer.

 Softswitch is in the control layer.

Softswitch Networking Architecture (cont)

Softswitch Networking Architecture (cont)

 The medium access layer mainly realizes the communication
 heterogeneous network and core transmit network
 among the heterogeneous network

 The transport layer accomplishes the centralization of

transmission the control information between the service
date & control layer and medium access.
 The service application layer
 Provides planes for the execution, management, created service
 Process signaling interfaces with control layer through the open API.

Softswitch Networking Architecture (cont)
 Control layer :
 Responsible for controlling the end-to-end

session
 Decides the setup, continuation and switch of

call.
 Separates call control and media service

Softswitch and NGN
 NGN converged network allows the creation, deployment

and management of all kinds of services.
 One of the main components of NGN network is softswitch
 Softswitch enables integration of different protocols inside

NGN network.
 The main function of softswitch is to create network

interfaces
gateways.

gateways

and

media

Broadly speaking, NGN means all the new network technology and
narrowly speaking, NGN means softswitch

Softswitch and NGN (cont)
 Jiang Lintao thought

that the core of NGN

is two levels
 one is the carrier network such as TDM, ATM,

IP
 The other is is service network and softswitch

plays an important role in it.
 The core of future VoIP will be softswitch.
 Hardly define the softswitch as the core of

NGN.

Softswitch and NGN – Lucent Softswitch

 More and more governments and organizations

have taken part in NGN such as IETF, 3GPP,
UMTS, CANET3.
 Ramnath A. and Lakshmi-Ratan in Bell labs

provided Next-generation access services

Saras)
 Lucent Softswitch control of DSL and cable

access
 Lucent Softswitch system architecture Policy

Softswitch and NGN – Lucent Softswitch
 The purpose of Project Saras was to

develop a software system that solves
several major problems that providers of
telephone services
 The Octavia platform integrates the

FRIENDS platform and network equipment
that provides the Parlay API
