A True American Hero
Harriet Tubman was born a slave on
a plantation in Maryland. The year was 1820.
Her family raised her to be proud and strong.
Harriet had to work from daybreak to
sundown. Harriet dreamed of freedom.
She dreamed of a brighter future for
her family.
In 1849, Harriet was able to
escape to Philadelphia. She used the
Underground Railroad. This was a
network of escape routes. The routes
led slaves to freedom in the North.
Along the way, people helped hide
the slaves. They hid them in safe
houses called stations.
Harriet wanted other slaves to
have a better future, so she became a
conductor for the Underground Railroad.
This meant she would lead groups of slaves
to safety. It was unusual for a woman to become
a conductor. But Harriet was not afraid. She was a
brave woman. Harriet made 19 trips back to Maryland.
One was to help her whole family escape. Other trips led slaves on
dangerous journeys to freedom. Harriet faced torture or even death
if she was caught. There was a $40,000 reward for her capture.
Despite these dangers, Harriet helped more than 300 slaves escape.
Harriet Tubman will always be remembered as a true American hero.
