In their talks, Americans often try to be frank. They like to talk
fairly openly about their families, jobs and feelings. This is their way
to express friendliness and sincerity, They like to use phrases such
as "Tell it like it is", "Don't beat around the bush", and "Get right to
the point". They are trying to say that they do not want to hear only
what may be polite or pleasant, but rather they want to know the
way things really are or seem to be, as well as a person's real
feelings on many matters.
Certain kinds of information, however, are shared with only close
friends; don't ask an American about his or her salary, the cost of
expensive items, romantic interests, or the age of anyone not nearly
your age. Many people do not like to be asked how much they weigh
or details about their marital arrangements, especially in mixed
company. If people start raising their eyebrows at you, this means
your questions or talks are unexpected or may not be in good taste.
Sports are often a safe topic of talk.

11 December 2008
Hi George,
How are you? Is it winter in London? Over here, it's the school
holiday and also the monsoon season. It rains cats and dogs every
afternoon or evening. It is so boring. I cannot play my favourite
game, football. All I can do is read and watch television.
Last week, I watched an interesting programme on 'Animal
Planet'. It was about the animals and their young. I learn many
things from this programme. For example, we always say a cat
mews. Well, it should be - a cat purrs. A frog 'ong ong?' Not A frog
croaks. Just like we croak when we have sore throat. What about
a bear? It growls. A dog barks (woof, woof).
What about their young? What are their young called? A baby
goose is called gosling. A baby bird is called nestling and a baby
goat is a kid. A baby elephant is a calf and a baby cow is also a
calf.
I also learned that a peacock is a male while a female is called
peahen. What about a duck? The male is called a drake. A ewe?

There was something wrong with Mrs. Black's skin that always
gave her a lot of trouble. So one day she went to see her doctor.
However, he could not find anything wrong with her. Then he sent
her to the local hospital for tests. And soon the hospital sent the
results of the tests to Mrs. Black's doctor. The next morning, the
doctor telephoned her to give her a list of things that he thought she
should not eat, as any of them might be the cause of her skin
trouble.
Mrs. Black carefully wrote down all the things on a piece of paper.
Then she left it beside the telephone and went to a ladies' meeting.
Two hours later she got back home. And she found her husband
was waiting for her. There was a big basket full of packages
beside him. When he saw her, he said, "Hi, dear. I have done all
your shopping for you."

"Done all my shopping?" she asked in surprise, "But how did you
know what I wanted?"
"Well, when I got home, I found your shopping list beside the
telephone," answered her husband, "So 1 went to the shops and
bought all the things you had written down."
"Oh, my dear! You have bought all the things the doctor did not
