chewing gums, and stamps even for a life insurance. You can even push
a button and get married and another button to get divorced.

III. READING
Read the passage and choose the best answer A, B, C
or D. (2,5 pts)
Sea lions are the best actors in the world. A sea lion that can't
show off is miserable. The only thing that makes him more
miserable is having him watch another sea lion show off.
Jack remembers one old sea lion named Nep whom they taught to
smoke a pipe. One night, he let another sea lion, Paul, do the smoking
act on the stage. It was too much for Nep. He came down to Jack
barking madly. Jack took the pipe from Paul and gave it to Nep, who
kept it in his mouth and puffed off clouds of smoke. Suddenly
something caught the man in the rear. It was Paul. He ripped through
Jack's pants, tearing a part of his shut, and the only thing that would
calm him was another chance to show off with the pipes.

Once a baby sea lion was born, weighing about twelve pounds and
helpless like a kitten. On the third day his mother began to teach him
to swim. She picked him up by the neck of his and dropped him in the

One of New York's most beautiful and valuable buildings, the New
York Public Library in the heart of the city, may have to close its door.
Even though the library is in the busiest part of the city, it has
grass and trees around it, and benches for people to sit on. Even
more unusual in crowded New York, its rooms are very large. A
reader can sit and think and work in comfort.
And what books there are to work with! The library has over
thirty million books and paintings. It owns one of the first copies of
a Shakespeare play, a Bible printed by Gutenbery in the 15th
century, and a letter written by Columbus in which he tells of
finding the new world.
Every New Yorker can use the library's riches free.
But the cost of running the library has risen rapidly in recent
years, and the library does not have enough money to continue its
work. In the past it was open every evening and also on Saturday
and Sunday. Now it is closed at those times, to save money.
The library is trying in every possible way to raise more money to
meet its increasing costs. Well-known New York writers and artists
are trying to help. So are the universities, whose students use the
library.
