2 SUMMARY
Today, the issue of employment is always a hot issue, which is interested not only by
the press, agencies, and businesses, but it has been ingrained in the minds of many
students since they were young. sitting on school chairs are constantly accumulating
knowledge and experience to achieve their noble goals in the future. In terms of
behavioral capacity, students are an important part of working age. They are physically
and mentally strong. In terms of purpose, students going to school are expected to have
knowledge to be able to work and work after graduation.
Currently, most students in general are aware that there are many ways of learning, and
more and more students are choosing to learn in practice. It's overtime. Part-time work
is no longer a small phenomenon but has become a trend, closely associated with the
academic and daily life of students while still sitting on the school chair. Students go to
work part-time for income, they also want to accumulate more experience, learn more
practically.... And the reason part-time jobs have now become a trend is because of
students, especially when living in today's competitive society, social knowledge and
practical knowledge greatly affect their thinking ability as well as their ability to work
after graduation.
However, there are still many dilemmas surrounding students' decision to work parttime. From the above reasons, we decided to choose the topic demand for part-time jobs of UEH students= to do our research.

3 INTRODUCTION TO THE STATISTICAL
RESEACH PROJECT
1

lOMoARcPSD|17343589

3.1 Research problem
This project records and analyses the demand for part-time jobs of UEH students

through answering group-generated questions:
1. Who decides your major?
2. What is your field of study?
3. What year are you a student?
4. What do you usually do in your free time?
5. What are your strengths and weaknesses?
6. What type of job are you looking for?
7. What interests you most when starting a part-time job?
8. What is your desired salary?
9. Do you choose work that pays by time or by results?
10. According to you, is being positive for part-time jobs a condition for students to
become active and master their thoughts?
11. During university study, do you think students should have a job?
12. What do you think about job placement centers?
With the above information, we can know what an important factor is in choosing a
part-time job of UEH students.

3.2 About Concerning Regarding Rationale of the Study
Part-time jobs are no longer a small phenomenon but have become a trend. It has been
closely associated with the study and student life, even while sitting at school. Not only
for the purpose of increasing income, but also to help students accumulate more
experience, practical experience, learn more practically. Part-time jobs are inherently a
current trend because the market economy is strongly competitive, social knowledge
and practical knowledge greatly affect students' thinking ability as well as working
ability.
After graduation, however, a relatively good study result, these accumulated concepts
are achieved or not, depending on their ability to arrange and balance their study and
work time. Because when you go to work part-time, it means you must accept the
limited time, pressure as well as difficulties encountered in your part-time life.

3.3 Survey target
2

lOMoARcPSD|17343589

• Collecting specific data on additional status performance of students at Danang
University of Education.
• Aggregate and analyze data.
• Comment and give some measures and recommendations on students' part-time
jobs.

3.4 Survey scope
• Target audiences: Students of UEH University.
• Reason for choosing audiences: Because the research topic is relatively short for
students and has limited capacity, the group that mainly focuses on the research
is UEH University students to have a research result. as accurately as possible.
• General characteristics of the target audiences: All students are active, aged 18 25. When giving the survey to you, you are very enthusiastic and happy to answer
immediately. If there is anything you do not understand, you will immediately
ask and be ready to answer survey questions.

4 IMPLEMENTATION METHOD
4.1 Rationale
In the context of the growing socio-economy, people will always be the force towards
progress and development to keep up with these great strides.
According to the Young Generation Research Report initiated by the British Council in
Vietnam, 86% of respondents are optimistic that the younger generation of Vietnam
will help the country develop better, and 75% agree that the quality of Vietnamese
education is improving. The report shows that the thoughts and concepts of today's
youth are generally optimistic and believe in the prospects of Vietnam constantly
modernizing the country.
University of Economics Ho Chi Minh city directs students to become global citizens,
students are always looking for, exploring, learning the good and the new. The theory
and practice are different, in addition to learning the knowledge that the University
provides, students, need to work part-time to hone the skills necessary for the future
and serve the country well.
The COVID-19 pandemic has passed, and life returned to a new normal but it is not
easy for anyone, students in general and UEH students in particular also need to earn
extra income to cover life.

Therefore, the project 'Demand for part-time jobs of UEH students' overtime needs is
carried out based on modeling and hypothesizing the cause of the problem. From there,
comment and conduct a project report.

4.2 Definitions in the project
4.2.1 What is a part-time job and what are its characteristics?
4

lOMoARcPSD|17343589

Part-time employment is a definition that describes or expresses a job that is informal,
infrequent, non-fixed, unstable, or part-time. These tasks usually last for a period of 3
to 5 hours per day or less depending on the nature of each job.
Unlike full-time employment, also known as full-time employment, part-time jobs are
often not fixed, sometimes it is not mandatory for us to go to work, we can do it from
home, you have a choice of environment and how to work as well as the time so that
you can work.
4.2.2 Why do most UEH students have such a need for part-time jobs?

Currently, with the strong development trend of the city, many chain-store models were
born to serve the needs of life. Therefore, the need to recruit people to do a lot more
will entail the need for everyone to go to work, especially students.
According to the survey, 77.2% of first-year students are those who have average study
time, so free time is quite relative, so it makes sense to find a job that fills the vacancy.
Student life has a lot of expenses to spend, in addition to tuition fees also accompanied
by the lodging, and living expenses, so finding jobs from 3 to 5 hours a day will help
students have new sources of income to cover their lives.
In addition, a part-time job helps UEH students accumulate many job skills, job skills,
and life skills, which are extremely valuable equipment and will help students better in

the process of applying for jobs after graduation.
4.2.3 What types of jobs are there in part-time jobs?

There are many types of part-time jobs such as online part-time work, employees at
stores, waitresses, kitchen assistants or teaching assistants, home tutors, ... All the above
is very suitable for students, especially UEH students.

4.3 Implementation process
• Observe the situation, problems around the school, life, society, and real
situation.
• Decide on the topic to conduct research.
• Set the goal of the study.
• Create questions and design questions on Google forms.

5

lOMoARcPSD|17343589

• Conduct a survey by posting forms on social networking sites and uploading
them to UEH student groups and conducting a survey of 180 students studying
at the University of Economics Ho Chi Minh City.
• Quantitative, qualitative data was used in the project. Descriptive statistical
research methods are used in the project. Use questionnaires to analyze factors
that affect UEH students' need to work part-time and don't do more.
• Use Microsoft Excel software to import data, analyze, and process data.
• Use Microsoft Word to analyze the results collected and conduct project reports.

4.4 Theoretical basis
4.4.1 Statistical Method

Our team processed the data after completing the survey using statistical methods
of description and statistical inference. To clarify more about the needs of UEH
students to work part-time and not to do more, the causes and benefits or limitations.
From there, there are reasonable solutions, helping people have a multidimensional
view of the needs of students.
Sample selection method
For the project to be completed smoothly, and as accurately as possible, our group
has reduced the scope of UEH students and conducted online surveys. This makes
it easier for our group to collect information and process data.
4.4.2 Survey scales for data processing

There are 4 basic types of scales to present in order capable of increase information
expression:
Nominal scale: in this scale, the numbers are only used to classify objects, they have
no other meaning. In essence, the nominal scale is the classification and naming of
expressions and the designation of them a corresponding number.
Ordinal scale is a scale on which the numbers on the nominal scale are arranged
according to a certain convention of hierarchy or inferiority, but we do not know the
distance between them. This means that any hierarchical scale is a nominal scale but
cannot be inferred in reverse.
Interval scale is a special form of hierarchical scale because it indicates the distance
between hierarchies. Usually, the interval scale takes the form of a continuous and
steady sequence of digits. This sequence of numbers has two poles at either end that
represent two opposing states. Statistical calculations can be added to this type of
6

Downloaded by v? ngoc ()

lOMoARcPSD|17343589

scale compared to the previous two types of scales: calculating variable intervals,
average numbers, and standard deviations.
Ratio scale: scale has all the distance characteristics and order of the interval scale,
the 0-point in the scale is a real value so we can perform the division to calculate the
ratio for comparison purposes. The scale allows all statistical analysis calculations
to be performed. (1)
Our group used two scales: the nominal scale and interval scale for processing, and
analyzing the data collected in the survey on the demand for part-time jobs of UEH
students.

Meanwhile, fourth-year students made up the smallest proportion, accounting for only

1.7%. Second-year, and third-year students accounted for 14.4% and 6.7% respectively.
5.1.2 Major

When it comes to majors, most students participating in the survey are from other
majors, accounting for 33.9%. Besides, business administration accounts for a
relatively high proportion of 27.2%, followed by the financial sector and international
business study with the same proportion of 11.7%. In addition, there are several other
majors such as accounting, insurance business, hotel management, international

lOMoARcPSD|17343589

finance, travel & tourism service management, logistics, and hospitality management
accounting for a relatively small proportion (under 4%).

5.2 Research into the project topic
5.2.1 Do you need a part-time job?

These results are based on the opinions of 180 people that participate in the project’s
survey:

As we can see, there are 144 people want to have part-time jobs which is accounted for
80%. Otherwise, only 36 individuals do not want to work because it is not necessary.
People want to have part-time jobs.
5.2.2 What time would you like to work?

The pie chart illustrates the percentage of the time of day that UEH students desire to

work part-time. Up to 44% of students want to work part-time in the evening, which is
9

Downloaded by v? ngoc ()

lOMoARcPSD|17343589

understandable when it is at the end of the day, students do not have to go to school and
have free time to go to work. Students have a desire to work in the afternoon and
morning at 31% and 25%, respectively, although it accounts for a smaller proportion in
the evening but is generally negligible, which depends on their ability to schedule.
5.2.3 Does your family support student employment?

Our group surveyed 180 students studying at the University of Economics in Ho Chi
Minh City and the results showed that as the chart side, the percentage of UEH students
who have the support of their families to go to work is up to 83%, this is a significant
number and can be considered a positive number.
However, the remaining 17% of UEH students still do not receive the encouragement
of their families in working part-time jobs.
5.2.4 What are your strengths at work?

With a total of 144 respondents, the following results were obtained:
10

Downloaded by v? ngoc ()

lOMoARcPSD|17343589

Most respondents choose teamwork skills= and lot of people voted by approximately 80 people. Just only 10 people think that they
have ability to write code and have graphic design skills.
Obviously, it can see that most people choose soft skills as their strength.
5.2.5 Common weakness of students when taking part-time job

Following the given pie chart, although there are 144 students taking part in our team
project survey, voted by more than 50 students. A lot of respondents think that teamwork is not their
weak point when working which is just around 5,6%. In addition, unsociable is not their
fear at work because it is only 9,7%.
5.2.6 Reasons why students take part-time jobs

11

lOMoARcPSD|17343589

Of all the reasons, the reason students, accounting for 81,9%. After that, the second-highest proportion belongs to the
reason However, the reasons smallest percentage. Money is also considered as their common reason so earn extra
income and independ on family are voted by around 75%.
5.2.7 Jobs those students have done before

With a survey sample of 144 students, there are some results to be presented:

Looking at the graph, it is readily apparent that 50% people did not have job before.
minority of people choose In general, most people do not have work experience.
5.2.8 How students find appropriate part-time jobs

According to the sample of 144 students, more than 78% students find jobs online
because of the convenience. After that, the second-highest proportion belongs to
through brokerage center is not their priority so it is just only 15,3%.

5.2.9 Do students want their part-time jobs relate to their major?

Following the given pie chart, although there are 144 students taking part in our team
project survey, the highest percentage of individuals choose 80% of the total. Otherwise, 20% of students do not care about the relation of jobs and
major.
In conclusion, Jobs related to their major is also considered as their priority.

There are only a few students can’t maintain between work and study, about 3 students
totally unable to maintain and 8 students unable to maintain their work and study.
There are up to 68 students can maintain their study and work normally, which
accounting for 47.2%.
And there are 65 students can maintain their study and work greater than normal.
We want to prove that there are 50% of students can maintain their work and study
greater than normal.
The survey shows that with 144 response there are 65 students who can maintain work
and study greater than normal.
Step 1: we develop the null hypothesis and the alternative hypothesis:
H0: p=0.5
H㖪: p≠0.5
Step 2: We determine the level of significance α = 0.05
Step 3: We calculate the test statistic
We have p = x/n = 0.4514
p = p01-p0n= 0.5 1-0.5144 ≈0.0416
z= p-p0 p= 65144-0.50.0416 ≈ -1.3355 ≈-1.34
Step 4: Compute the p-value
For z = -1.34
The p-value = 0.1802
Step 5: Determine whether to reject H0
Because p-value > α = .05, we can not reject H0 => agree that there are many students
can maintain their work and study greater than normal.
Because our survey subjects are UEH university students, most students have a very
good sense of learning, besides, it is not too difficult to arrange an appropriate time

for study and work at the age 18th.

5.2.11 Most desired part-time jobs

The job which is most chosen by students is server with 52% of 144 people. Then the
following jobs are teaching assistants, sales and online marketing which have the
percentages of 41%, 37.5% and 31.9%. Security staff is the job that has the lowest
chosen percentage, with only 2 chosen from 144 people. This also shows that most
students want to choose easy jobs, suitable for their condition.
Being a server is not too demanding in terms of knowledge as well as physical, and it
also help students to improve themselves, help them to create more relationships and
gain more life experience.
About teaching assistants, this job requires knowledge, but doing this job can help
students develop themselves more and more, the working environment is mostly stable,
there are not many bad influences.
About sales and online marketing, these two jobs often require students with knowledge
and ability to withstand pressure while working and studying.
5.2.12 Desired part-time jobs salary

lOMoARcPSD|17343589

The salary chosen by the most students is from 3 million to 5 million a month. After
that is the salary from 2 million to 3 million a month. This will also make it easy to
realize that at the current salary of 2-5 million a month, there are many part-time jobs
suitable for students, helping them to develop themselves, gain experience and earn
extra income. Jobs with higher salaries such as from 5 million to 7 million, 7 million to
10 million a month, take a lot of sweat and effort, which means they have to face the
trade-off between their studies to take care of their jobs.

In 144 respondents, there are 113 respondents chose time-based pay. According to
Encyclopedia of Human Resource Management, time-based pay is the payment related
to the time employees spends at work. Employees at the same grades receive the same
amount of money per working-hour. And performance-related pay is the payment
denpends on your productivity.
In general, it is easy to understand that students prefer to choose the time-based pay

because they do not have enough experience and knowledge, so they cannot earn much
money in the form of performance-pay. Performance-based pay can also cause students
to be drawn to work and then forget about their studies.

People don’t want to have part-time jobs
5.2.14 Common reasons

With a total of 180 respondents, the following results were obtained:
We give a series of reasons that lead to students not being able to work part-time and
of course, there are many reasons that occur simultaneously with a student.
In particular, the percentage of students who did not work because of priority for study
accounted for 83.3% with 30 counts. 36.1% of UEH students said they were not
confident enough to go to work, 30.6% was the rate that students could not arrange,
balancing time between study and work.
Parents have their own worries about their children, so they do not support the fact that
they are still students but go to work, the percentage of families not allowed accounts
for 25% with 9 counts. A small percentage of UEH students because their families are

qualified and are afraid of getting caught up in social pitfalls should not go to work.
Parents have their own worries about their children, so they do not support the fact that
they are still students but go to work, the percentage of families not allowed accounts
for 25% with 9 counts.
A small percentage of UEH students because their families are qualified and are afraid
of getting caught up in social pitfalls should not go to work, both causes account for
22.2% with each count being 8. In addition, a small number of students feared that extra
work would affect their personal health by 16.7%, and many other reasons accounted
for 13.9% with the remaining 5 counts.
In general, the majority of UEH students do not work because they prioritize their
studies above all else, and the rest of the reasons are often because they are not confident
enough or not strong enough to overcome their own barriers and fears. Others, because
of the family's care, even if they want to go to work to learn, it is not possible.
5.2.15 What is your level of desire to get a part-time job?

By developing a scale from 1 to 5, which represent from totally don’t want to totally
want, we want to measure how the students who don’t have demand on part-time jobs
desire to have a part-time job.
With a total of 36 respondents, the following results were obtained:
13 students think it is normal to go to work which is accounted for 36,1%. However,
the smallest percentage of project objects is 8,3%, which belongs to the highest level
of desire to get a part-time job.

We conclude that there are more than 50% of students who don’t have a demand on
part-time jobs really don’t want to go to work.
To confirm the above statement, we develop hypothesis test. With 36 responses, there
are 15 responses that chose the don’t want and totally don’t want to have a part-time
job, we combine these two level to the don’t wan’t level, which account for 41.7% of
36 students
Step 1: we develop the null hypothesis and the alternative hypothesis as follow:
H0: p ≥ 0.5
H㖪: p < 0.5
Step 2: Determine the level of significance α = 0.05
Step 3: Calculate the test statistics:
With p = x/n = 15/36 = 0.4167
p = p01-p0n= 0.5 1-0.536 ≈0.083
z= p-p0 p= 1536-0.50.083 ≈ -1.004 ≈-1
With z = -1, accumulative probality = 0.1587
P-value = 1 – 0.1857 = 0.8143
P-value > α = 0.05 => we can’t reject H0
Agree that there are more than 50% students who don’t have demand to have a job
also really don’t want to have a job.
